[UPDATED With the Order and With Some Quotes From the Conference] Humboldt County News Conference About COVID-19

Snapshots from the video:

“There is not a significant change in our own community,” said Dr. Teresa Frankovich, Humboldt County’s Health Officer. She said we just have the same one case that tested positive and that person is considered healthy now.

She explained, “I’m issuing this order right now because of the changes that are happening right now because of the changes that are happening across the country and across the state…[We need] to increase our social distancing…The idea is to maximize the distance between people as much as possible in order that we can minimize the impact of additional cases coming quickly into our area and impacting the medical system.”

“We will get through this,” she reassured the listeners later.

Sheriff Billy Honsal said, “We need to care for others by listening to what is being said today…To shelter in place is something that we know demands a lot on our citizens…We have to take this serious…Look out for others.” Call elders and shop for elders were two suggestions.

Honsaal noted that violations of the order are a misdemeanor. He said, “We are about educating not enforcement…Our goal is to achieve compliance through education first…This is not a curfew.”

What is an essential service?
Frankovich said these are some examples of the essential services: Newspapers, tv, radio, banks, hardware stores, educational institutions, restaurants, legal, accounting services, etc. “We will make clear that blood donation is considered an essential service,” said Dr. Teresa Frankovich, Humboldt County’s Health Officer.

“Many of the things people do in their day to day life will still be doable,” she said. Those that remain open should implement social distancing and cleaning protocols.

Honsal said gyms and playgrounds will be closed but people can hike or walk on the beach with their family or by themselves.

Crime?

In response to a question, Honsal said that he hasn’t heard that other counties who are sheltering in place are experiencing an uptick in crime.

Homeless?

We’re looking at securing motel rooms for homeless who are being tested and need a place to self-isolate, said Michele Stephens, Public Health Director.

Cannabis?

“Businesses such as agriculture are certainly allowed to continue under this order,” said Dr. Teresa Frankovich, Humboldt County’s Health Officer. Businesses, including cannabis businesses, should practice social distancing including curbside service where possible she explained.

Note: We’ve been told that hotels are considered essential services and are open, according to Richard Stenger of Redwood Coast Parks. “They offer accommodations to many workers, like truck drivers and emergency personnel, that are vital to the state’s efforts right now,” he said.

Chloroquine

In other news, looks like even CNN is being a-political.. ; https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/19/health/us-coronavirus-case-updates-thursday/index.html

“Trump pushes FDA to drop barriers to treatments
In a news briefing Thursday, President Trump said he had pushed the US Food and Drug Administration to eliminate barriers to getting therapeutics to coronavirus patients.
Trump said the antimalarial drug chloroquine and its analog hydroxychloroquine would be available by prescription to treat the novel coronavirus.
Whether the drugs are effective against Covid-19 is still under investigation.
FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn tempered the President’s remarks, telling reporters the FDA was still responsible for making sure products are safe. […] Regarding the President’s remarks on chloroquine, Hahn said the president directed the FDA to look at the drug and see if its use could be expanded to benefit coronavirus patients. “And again, we want to do that in the setting of a clinical trial — a large, pragmatic clinical trial to actually gather that information,” Hahn said.”

Choroquine has been around for decades. It is a very old cheap drug. No reason the FDA and CDC can’t look at other countrys’ data and research on that drug. To do otherwise is just being a shill for US drug company monied interests.

From Wikipedia; “The wholesale cost in the developing world is about US$0.04.[7] In the United States, it costs about US$5.30 per dose.”

This is completely unconstitutional and unenforceable and every local government knows it. They will threaten you with legal action and hope you will not ask questions and comply. If you want to stay home then by all means stay home, but no one has any real authority to make you stay in your home.

I understand that many people have completely gone soft and would surrender any and all of their rights at the first available opportunity. However for the rest of us, the rights guaranteed by the constitution don’t just go away because someone is scared.

I think Pete is right from a legal standpoint, which is all he is pointing out. He’s not advocating you run up to everyone you see and lick their face.
The order is actually moot, simply being full of good advice, aimed at getting people to pay attention to the basics.

There should not be criminal penalties for leaving your house. We understand the need to be conscious of others. Misdemeanors for leaving your house for activities THEY deem essential is walking a very thin line with our rights.

Points for getting “open borders” into your comment.

Pete, you can whine and complain about actions that deem unconstitutional all you want because we here in ‘Murica don’t care about anyone else but ourselves. But this is a crisis that spans borders and affects every living human being on this planet, particularly to the high risk folks, so do your fellow humans a favor and stay at home as much as you can. Obviously this is a voluntary request but do your damn citizen duty and think about other people for once.

but the point is to not overload the system… if all beds are taken for covid patients what happens when you’re in a car accident while disregarding the shelter in place order? that is exactly the issue in northern italy at the moment. a country (and specifically region) that has excellent health care and more hospital beds per person than the united states. they have an 8% morbidity rate from the virus but that isn’t counting the heart attack, stroke, car accident… victims that there is no space for as well. doctors are making heart-wrenching decisions that they would not have to be making had people just social distanced/stayed home more. they are locked down now and the bodies are piling up so quickly that the army is literally hauling them away in trucks. it’s horrifying and headed our way. i don’t disagree that it’s unconstitutional but the alternative is not something i want to see happen here.

Just out of curiosity, how long are some of you willing to go along like this? Is everyone here willing to let the government tell them to stay home for months or longer? We can all hope it’s a few weeks, but if it’s much longer there will be many more people who’s lives will be ruined from the economic devastation than people who would have been seriously affected by this virus.

City folk worry about their rights being violated by being forced to stay in their home, country folk worry about their rights being violated by being dragged from their homes!

Actually Pete, someone posted the Federal emergency powers code on another website when certain declarations are triggered, there is WHOLE lot of violating of your perceived rights that can be done. This is a County action though and Billy seems to be pretty chill about it.

Pete is right. And what he is saying is that the order it self is illegal not that it should not be followed. When the local governments hold press conferences giving orders stating that they are enforceable and misdemeanors if broken they are over stating their powers. The overstating of their powers is what Pete is disagreeing with. The government has no place telling people they can not go to church or worship in the houses of such, however they can suggest and request they people refrain from doing so. But threatening with fines and jail to people who wish to worship together is outside even the federal government’s powers.

Criminal penalties for leaving ones home is very 1984. They should just send you home, or tell you to hurry along. I just read the Sustainable Development Goals from the UN last night, the EARN IT Act, and all about iD2020. I thought they were conspiracies, but its all real. Along with Elon Musks brain chip. Makes me very suspicious of all this. If you want to scare yourself, break out your tin foil hat and read all that stuff.

My right as a individual is to not have to worry about people thinking of only themselves and sucking it up, for the Health of all. Personally you don’t have the right to choose my future and if you feel you are 100% in the right then get on it but remember it will be on you and the like minded if this turns to marshal law. If you know anything about where you live then it would be best not to push it!! Just Saying…

Well maybe it could get there if people behave with a great deal of stupidity. But, in the absence of a political agenda, it simply is good sense. Would you insist on your rights by violating such orders if it makes you and your’s sick?

My rights to health are violated all the time by other people. Second hand smoke kills an average of 41,000 innocent, non-smokers a year, yet its not illegal. Drunk drivers violate our rights to health by killing 10,000 people per year, yet its not illegal. Its pretty much illegal to leave our homes for something that is about as deadly worldwide as drunk drivers are in our country alone. It seems very suspicious that all of a sudden the gov’t “cares”?

This does not just effect older people. Here’s the NYT, you can also find these same statistics elsewhere. Younger people need to know this or there will be more deaths and intensive care patients who are young. If a person is sick enough to be in intensive care, they don’t always recover 100%.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/18/health/coronavirus-young-people.html

“New C.D.C. data shows that nearly 40 percent of patients sick enough to be hospitalized were age 20 to 54. But the risk of dying was significantly higher in older people.

[…]

The report, issued Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that — as in other countries — the oldest patients had the greatest likelihood of dying and of being hospitalized. But of the 508 patients known to have been hospitalized, 38 percent were notably younger — between 20 and 54. And nearly half of the 121 patients who were admitted to intensive care units were adults under 65, the C.D.C. reported.”

With this 3 week shut down – who I feel for are the small business owners. Look at Joggin Shoppe, Adventures Edge, The Art Store, Tin Can Mailman – these little places that make our area awesome live on tight budgets. They can loose everything in the next 3 weeks. They don’t get unemployment, they don’t get bail outs. The county workers are set, school personnel still get paid, hospitals make bank on disasters – not the little guys, they can loose their business in the blink of an eye.

Cities and states are destroying small businesses in communities faster than the coronavirus ever could. If you think our society is exempt from totalitarianism you are sadly mistaken and are dooming the next generations to it. Fear is the only thing spreading like a virus.

Isn’t this what environmentalists want? Overpopulation is the problem! This can solve that! Or are y’all to afraid to put your money where your mouth is and let natural selection take its course? But I guess the environment really isn’t that important when its trying to kill y’all now, right? I will remember this, everyone remember this, no one cares! And where are all the anti-vaxxers right now? Hiding in their fuckin homes! Look at the socialized medicine failing all over the world right now, Italy is a mess with its arcane healthcare system. Maybe I will eat my words later, but for now we seem to be doing a lot better than most places.

In the seriousness of the moment, addressing the crisis that is affecting just about every American he is so petty and self absorbed that he can’t call it the Corona Virus. He crosses out Corona and replaces it with Chinese. This man is so immature it’s scary.

There are not 100 other countries in the same position.

There only 7 countries with over 10,000 cases.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Many that had way less time to prepare made simple moves of health screenings at airports.

Thailand. Singapore. Hong Kong.

More.

Trump took it slow from the beginning. He never took it seriously enough.

Maybe Trump is setting up his attempt to do a Benito Mussolini on America. Become the first dictator. He has previously made reference to that by suggesting he should be permitted to be president (Supreme Ruler) for a third term and that he is god like and his violating the rule of law by not submitting to subpoenas and telling his cronies to not attend Congressional hearings and probably more. He even looks like Mussolini.
