This is a press release from the Humboldt County Health Officer:

Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich issued an Order of the Health Officer today, March 19, directing Humboldt County residents to shelter at their place of residence in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. The order is effective beginning at midnight tonight until 11:59 p.m. on April 9 unless it is extended or rescinded by the County Health Officer. Dr. Frankovich called this a pre-emptive move to address a rapidly changing situation. “We understand this has profound impacts on the everyday lives of Humboldt County residents and families, and we do not make this difficult decision lightly,” she said. “This order is a recognition of the imminent threat COVID-19 presents to the public’s health and a way to further broaden social distancing.” The order is intended to ensure the maximum number of people self-isolate in their residence to the extent possible. Exceptions will be made for people to seek or provide essential services such as obtaining medical care or supplies, grocery shopping, refilling prescriptions and caring for an ill family member in another household. Individuals who leave their homes for any reason are expected to maintain social distancing requirements of six feet. Read a full copy of the order here. Humboldt County has had one confirmed case of COVID-19. The individual recovered and was released from isolation on Feb. 28, after meeting all conditions for clearance required by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Humboldt County does not currently have any cases of COVID-19, but neighboring Mendocino County had its first positive case March 18. As of March 19, there were nearly 900 confirmed cases in California and 15 counties have issued shelter-in-place orders.

For current information about COVID-19, visit cdc.gov or cdph.ca.gov. Local information is available at humboldtgov.org/HumboldtHealthAlert, or during business hours by emailing [email protected] or calling 707-441-5000.

If the problem is identified as needing to prevent infected/potentially infected people from traveling to Humboldt/Emerald Triangle, why not put measures in place to do so?
Apparently there aren’t any active cases here, so announce a lock down within 36 hours and isolate the area. Trucks with food, etc., can still come through – more easily if cars are off the road – and in an area with such limited health resources at the best of times, prevention would seem advisable.
My son in Colorado is in quarantine as of yesterday due to international travel for work, so controlling spread locally makes sense here as well. I know it’s really difficult since guidelines change constantly, but compared with the reality of this virus, 14 – 21 days is manageable. More stringent measures earlier should have been enforced, but all we can do is what we’ve been asked and then determine as a community how to rebuild and move forwards. In 1914 my grandfather signed up for WW1 when his small town was shelled – and was discharged in 1919. He was just grateful he survived.

I could not agree more. Time is of the essence as the grow season is beginning, there will be lots of travelers and seasonal workers arriving in the Triangle.

Yeah, if there is one in mendo then there are really 50+ without symptoms yet. It is here already. Shut it down now, before there are hundreds or more.

As someone who has been snowed in with his wife and 2 kids since November I’d say most people can make this. Don’t freak out, but do go deep pantry which means just buy more of what you normally do till you have a good 3 week supply built up for any emergency (stores will be open…for now). I have said this before, twice we have had all road access cut off overnight by lightning fire events and even when it isn’t winter we have learned to ALWAYS have 2 months of everything we need on hand for an emergency. It is not that hard, we live off around $20k per year with no assistance, it is more a state of mind, and of course that includes all the critters.

Deep pantry is just that, raw ingredients in bulk. Packaging is a lot of space and totally useless to you. Take this time to learn some cooking skills with those raw ingredients, try bread, then graduate to a $4 pizza which is what a large costs my household. Plant a garden this year, especially if you have kids who need something. As far as kids are concerned there is a good article here https://kymkemp.com/2020/03/14/letter-to-the-community-keeping-things-fun-if-you-need-to-be-home-with-young-kids-for-covid-19-containment/

Give them a structure they can follow every day, our kids know like clockwork what they are doing next. Take this time to bond with your kids and teach them a new skill. This year my oldest and I took up a daily weightlifting regime (more aerobic than weight), we stared him on gun safety and targets with a Red Ryder and we are learning to make fire from firesteel and lenses, knowing the best tinder and kindling sources in different conditions. You will need this relationship because you will ask yourself as you are trying to get the morning stock market numbers with them running around in circles yelling and shooting their space guns if the are trying to drive you crazy…YES!!! They absolutely are!!! They are kids, that is what they do! So, go crazy in a good way and let some of the stress melt away.

Same with the spouse. This is stressful, we are all doing this new, even us, staring at each other every day since November watching that hole in their face making that irritating sound, now we have to do it with viral overload. I am part of a few survival forums (for us they are “everyday forums”) online and I have already seen a few instances where people say they have the food and water for anything but a day into being locked down they are already at their spouses throat. You have to meet halfway, on everything, that is marriage, it is work and there is no better time to work on it that when you are with them for the next 3 weeks. Work on each other, work on the kids together. If we get a long haul winter like Nov-June (8 months! Seen it!) that is how me and my wife get through it. 3 weeks is nothin. Take care of those kids.

Good advice, especially the cooking. I cook from scratch most of the time still, and buy greens from a farmshare. We are going to be eradicating the ivy and other invasives – well attempting to – as our family project. May as well do something to benefit the environment. Also planting lots of seeds to share starts and native plants locally. Fortunately there’s humour here, even at the gas station, so makes life more bearable. And, I can hear the woodpeckers now there’s reduced traffic. Silver linings.

In Italy the medium age of death for this virus is 81 years of age. If you are under 70 and have no pre-existing health problems you have a lower chance of death than for a normal flu season. So far we have about 400 deaths. We are using these severe measures that destroy our economy our travel industry and our tourism industries to extend the lives of 5% of our 80-year-olds by another five years ( less than 1 million people). In comparison, a normal flu season will kill 10 to 20 million people of all ages without much attention in the media. We all love grandma and grandpa but there seems to be a lack of proportion here.

“Somewhere between 291,000 and 646,000 people worldwide die from seasonal influenza every year, according to a CDC-supported study published in The Lancet.”

About as accurate as the rest of your post. What is happening in Italy is hell on earth. The medical system is in full meltdown, if you get in a car wreck no one comes, you die right there. If your appendix explode, you die. No one over 60 is given care because they don’t have the space. I think I read today that the number of front line Dr.’s and nurses that have been taken out by the virus is over 2400. If you would like an educational video you can go here

They also have socialized healthcare. We now get to see what happens in countries with “free” healthcare. They implode.

This is the face of liberal fascism. Do as we say since we are experts. Believe us or else. No sign of virus in county, no problem. Let’s crush capitalism. We hate commerce and love iron fisted rule making. Control of individuals is the goal of fascism. State control. Elimination of liberty and free thought. Welcome to liberalism’s Brave New World.

It’s easy for those who have jobs still to say it’s just fine to mandate staying at home. A huge percentage of the private sector is now not working. I along with most of my colleagues were laid off yesterday. The Governor, the County Public Health Officer and the Sheriff will undoubtedly keep their paychecks coming in. Same with other government officials. The truth is the same as it always is. The private sector funds the government through taxes. Now that the hype has cost most of the private jobs, how long can the government even function? Oh yeah, like the previous idiot in chief showed us, they can always just print more money and/or just increase the deficit. And now it’s a crime to be out in public? That doesn’t pay the rent or mortgage. It doesn’t give “unnecessary ” businesses any hope of a future. Bail outs didn’t work in the past and won’t in the future. The people need to be working.

I’m sure some of the regular commentators on this sight will reply to this with their usual hate and self righteous bigotry, but that’s ok. Their superior grasp on all subjects will remain staggering to commoners like myself, who have actual life experience.
