College of the Redwoods Responds to COVID-19 Virus News by Suspending Classes for the Week Following Spring Break

Press release from College of the Redwoods:

Coronavirus COVID-19

Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the COVID-19 virus outbreak is now officially a global pandemic. Additionally, the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services declared a local health emergency throughout the county.

In light of these recent announcements, we are suspending classes the week following Spring Break (March 23-27th) to prepare for the eventuality that we will need to suspend face-to-face instruction. This includes the main Eureka campus, the Del Norte Campus, and the Klamath-Trinity instructional site. Instruction at Pelican Bay State Prison will continue with regularly scheduled classes.

Faculty and staff will use this time to prepare to deliver instruction and student support services remotely in the event that face-to-face instruction is suspended. At this time, we expect the regular class schedule to resume on March 30th, 2020.

The residence halls will remain open for those students who live on campus.

Glad to see they are planning ahead, and giving teachers an extra week to plan for the possibility of online classes.

That’s way better than waiting to take action until people are already sick.

How does India, a country where they wipe their ass with their hands and is next to China, only have 52 cases?

Cases popping up like wildfire everywhere, now that testing is ramped up.
COVID19 has already been here for awhile, probably at least 3 months!
A virus like this could travel the globe in months, mutate into many and come back around.

So many people are carriers with no symptoms, Tom Hanks & Wife tested positive for crying out loud, and a basketball player from the Utah Jazz tested positive and he was hardly sick!

Do way more people have it right now than we think? Absolutely!
Have way more people had it already than we think? Yes.
Is it global already, even with strict bans? Mostly.

Deaths : 4634

Confirmed Cases: 126,369

Death Rate: 0.366

The number of unknown cases, many with mild symptoms are well unknown, but are most positively astronomical already.
Higher than a kite which puts the real death rate way lower, probably 0.1 inline with the common flu.

Not saying Covid19 isn’t nasty, its downright scary considering it’s origin.
So far though it is turning out better than the panic experienced yesterday with more test results coming back positive, and people not being terribly sick and dying.

Don’t panic people, we got this ~

You forgot to multiply by 100 the 0.36

3.6%

That’s the next step to find a percentage.

The flu death rate is 0.1%

The flu, just like Covid, has how many cases undiagnosed each year?

Let’s stick to the numbers and assume they’re semi-accurate enough to make decisions.

3.6% is a helluva lot more dead than 0.1%

Saying “this is just the flu” is the same as walking into a tornado saying “this is just the wind”.

If you refuse to multiply by 100, than don’t use a percentage for flu death rates. You can say the flu death rate is 0.001 if you take away the %, compared to Covids .36

4637/126369=0.0367 or 3.67%.

0.36= 36%

Several members emerged from a House briefing on the coronavirus pandemic saying that they were told that tests would increase — but that the briefers acknowledged that the US system is trying to catch up to other countries like South Korea.

“I don’t think anyone is going to leave that briefing satisfied with what’s going on with testing right now,” Democrat Rep. Mike Quigley said. “Bottom line, you leave that briefing and we are not where we need to be and not sure when we are going to get there. We are flying blind.”

He added: “I think the first thing they said was we don’t have a system that works like it does in other countries to adequately test at this time.”

Rep. Jan Schawkowsky said that they were told 7,300 tests have been conducted by the public sector and 3,800 tests by private labs.

“I think everyone leaving that briefing is feeling more confused than ever and disappointed in the numbers that we heard — that we really don’t have a system that tests are being distributed and tests are being given,” Schakowsky said

So we are at 11,000 tested, total.

Again, many countries are doing that in 1 day.

Go crap in the woods and pipe a spring. Man we’re lucky to live in Humboldt. Close the 36 and 299, push the 101 off last chance ridge and fall an old growth across it in Richardson grove! Make sure nobody sneaks up thorough island mountain and we need growdozers armed with carbofuran launchers patrolling our county lines!

No warm water for students hand washing at EHS. It’s freezing cold. How many students properly wash their hands when the water is 40°?

1,100 students in attendance. That’s not realistic since 50 percent of these students either live in poverty, are affected by mental illness(directly or indirectly), have parents affected by addiction or are without permanent housing.

Maybe instead of cancelling classes they should cancel spring break. Everyone will leave for spring break, a lot will party because it is spring break, and a lot will come back and bring COVID-19 to our community. If we are so worried about this flu we should probably not give the students the opportunity to leave the area and come back. Just sayin.

Why let the students in the dorms stay there? Sending everybody away except them does not make sense. Some universities have given all the students one week to leave campus including those in the dorms. Considering the size of those schools, it has created a panic with the students in dorms trying to find a place to live and move out within 5 days. Some I am sure will have to go home to live, and may not return to continue their education. One big frigging mess!
