Fish and Wildlife Delays Commercial Crab Fishing South of Mendocino/Sonoma County Line

Based on updated information and in response to concerns from the commercial Dungeness crab fleet, including written requests from Port Associations to further delay, California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) Director Charlton H. Bonham intends to further delay the start date for the California Dungeness crab fishery south of the Mendocino/Sonoma county line.
Today, Director Bonham issued a preliminary determination that the Nov. 22, 2019 start date poses a significant risk of marine life entanglement. The anticipated management response is a further delay of the opening of the commercial Dungeness crab fishery in that area until Dec. 15, 2019.
An aerial survey conducted by CDFW within Greater Farallones and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuaries on Monday, Nov. 18 showed whales throughout the survey area with concentrations foraging in depths between 30 and 50 fathoms off Point Reyes and Half Moon Bay. CDFW is working to schedule a follow up aerial reconnaissance flight to further evaluate whale presence in advance of Dec. 15 and will convene the California Dungeness Crab Fishing Gear Working Group the first week of December to conduct a risk evaluation.
Under the authority of Fish and Game Code, section 8276.1(c)(1), the Director may restrict take of commercial Dungeness crab if there is a significant risk of marine life entanglement due to fishing gear. As required in Fish and Game Code, section 8276.1(c)(4), the Director is providing 48 hours’ notice to the California Dungeness Crab Fishing Gear Working Group and other stakeholders.
Director Bonham will consider any recommendations or new information provided by 4:45 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, 2019. Anyone with recommendations and information related to this preliminary determination should submit it to whalesafefisheries@wildlife.
ca.gov by that deadline. No vessel may take, possess or land crab in an area closed for a significant entanglement risk. Fishing gear may not be deployed in any area closed to fishing.
CDFW, the fleet and the interested stakeholders are still at the start of an emerging effort to implement real-time decision-making processes. For the last 24 hours, CDFW has been engaged in real-time discussion and decision making, responding to industry requests for further delay.
Everyone recognizes the risks and all are committed to addressing that risk and developing the tools to assess and manage risk with more refinement. CDFW is committed to continuing to evaluate information as it is available in real-time to ensure that restrictions on the fishery are lifted as expeditiously as possible. CDFW appreciates the challenges and difficulties that come with the beginning of a new approach, and we appreciate the understanding of the public, the fleet, the Working Group and Californians hungry for crabs.
In related news, test results received today from the California Department of Public Health show there is no longer a public health concern regarding the safety of crab from the Mendocino/Sonoma county line to the California/Mexico border.

Thinking m gonna change my handle to “Favor4AFavor”…. eh Bill Clinton? Lol
??Good morning Kym, don’t you mean “not my potus “.
This summer brought us unusual tropical ocean currents all the way up into Alaska. The last time these ocean currents came up they called it the blob. it created a high pressure system over the ocean blocking most of the rain coming in and was part of the drought years. The warmer water also creates a habitat for algae blooms making most crustaceans poisonous for human consumption. Along with the acidification of the ocean making it harder for their young to survive. Mankind has severely damaged the cycle of life.
Reversing the damage already created can be almost impossible
As mankind moves himself into the brink of disaster
Mr. Magoo you’ve done it again
Who ever is President is my president, that should all be our way of thinking. Now it’s just division. Wonder how many presidents and politicians have asked for favors from others country’s? Not swaying my vote democrats. Sorry
Favor4AFavor, When my kid wails, “But he did it, too.” I say, “That doesn’t make it right.” And we have no proof anyone else did it. We do have proof that a number of career diplomats were horrified enough by President Trump’s behavior they were willing to risk their jobs to criticize it. That doesn’t sound like behavior that they see normally.
Holding millions of taxpayer dollars from reaching their intended goal of strengthening democracy and building an ally whose country is next door to a long time opponent, Russia, in order to smear a rival for political power is morally wrong. That’s hurting the goals of the US to clutch at the reins of power.
The really awful thing to me is that President Trump didn’t really appear to care if the investigation actually went forward…he just wanted the appearance of one. That is really ugly.
Its a bribe.
It’s a combination of bribery and extortion.
Big sigh, so this president “asked” by witholding aid, about potential illegal activities by the previous Vice Presidents son, and that’s bad. But it’s ok that Biden withheld aid to potentially help his son leverage his last name as political clout? If you’re upset at trump for doing this you literally, by the strictest legal definition have to be equal upset at the Democrats leading nominee aka Biden. Your “career diplomats” aren’t risking their jobs, they’re trying to put their party in a better position in this election as a trump impeachment secures a democrat getting the Oval Office.(which isn’t secure at all otherwise) Trumps bad because he did the same thing as the other party’s guy whose good? I’ll need a cheat card to keep up. Impeach trump? Ok, cool. So are you ok with impeaching proceedings for Biden if he’s elected for doing arguably the same thing in the same country if he’s elected? Or at that time is it time for bygones to be bygones and let the healing start?
Oh and by the way Obama and Biden were big supporters of the wall and security at or southern border until trump was also, then it didn’t poll well in a focus group just like quid pro quo
Obama greenlighted the use of teargas on illegal crossers too. Trump should have just used emails instead of phone calls, you can delete emails, right Hillary?
Mike, you don’t have to prove to me that President Obama and Joe Biden supported things I find repugnant. I already know that.
What worries me is those of us who aren’t willing to see the wrongdoing in front of them and keep trying to deflect criticism by saying other people have done wrong also.
And this is not some small issue. This is the example that future political scientists will point to as corrupt government in action.
I’m having trouble donating to your page kym. Won’t let me go to credit card option…..? Only paypal
Did you try putting the money amount in before clicking the credit card option? I had trouble the first time when I looked to see if there was something wrong because I didn’t do that. Once I entered a money amount, the credit card info opened right up.
Sigh…(I couldn’t resist echoing yours, Mike.) Show me one credible source that says that Biden withheld aid to help his son. And, no, Breitbart isn’t credible and though Trump alleges it there is no credible evidence to back it unlike in Trump’s case. And, if Biden did try to withhold aid, yes, I would be equally disgusted.
Note: multiple media outlets have hungrily attempted find dirt on Hunter Biden. So far, he appears to be guilty of letting his connection to his dad help him get a job. Not an awesome credential but not illegal.
Forget the career diplomats, let’s go for someone really partisan for President Trump: Ambassador Gordon Sondland–he donated one million to President Trump’s inauguration. And with the prior experience of running a hotel chain was appointed ambassador to the Ukraine by Trump. Let’s go for what the Wall Street Journal a conservative news organization reported about his testimony at the hearings.
They reported yesterday, “Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, said Wednesday at a public hearing that “at the express direction” of President Trump he urged Ukraine to announce investigations that would benefit the president politically.”
Here’s more: “Mr. Sondland testified there was a “quid pro quo” between a White House meeting for the new Ukrainian president and the investigations Mr. Trump sought, and explained in detail why he believed nearly $400 million in aid to Ukraine had been linked to those probes.”
As to impeaching Biden…if, IF he is elected and he has exactly the same evidence against him as Trump. I’d be advocating for his impeachment. And you should be, too.
I love this country and I do not want anyone holding its goals hostage to further their grip on political power. That is the recipe for the end of our democracy.
There is no advocating when media is controlled.I haven’t followed any of the impeach hearings. Trump is fuked. I agree with you there. Democrats will win. Amendments will be abolished and socialism will be installed. But hey, we will see drastic changes right? Yes we will. Have a good day kym and thank you for your freedom of speech section. I’m off to get a gift card for you!
In some areas of the world the media is controlled. Here in the US when the media runs the gamut from Breitbart on the far right to solid right media like the Wall Street Journal to neutral like Reuters to solid left media like the New York Times to Wonkette on the far left–I don’t think there is any sort of case to be made for a controlled media.
I was gonna watch the impeachment hearings but the beginning of the show looked like a “Jersey shore” episode. Mr trump portrayed with a sad face and weird dramatic music. If that’s not controlled media, I don’t know what is.
I just wrote and erased a comment that amounted to a dissertation. Here’s to short version you are incorrect on two things, first sondland said he presumed there was a quid pro quo as no one ever told him there was. Presumed. Second Biden himself admitted he held up aid to the Ukraine. All they initially allowed were things like MRE’s and blankets. Not sure if the breibart reference was a intentional l insult but the Washington post has a article on Biden’s hypocrisy in the Ukraine if that suits your taste more. Or if I have more time I could bring up the video footage of Biden himself saying he held up aid to the Ukraine. But that was before trump did it so it wasn’t bad then.
“But it’s ok that Biden withheld aid to potentially help his son leverage his last name as political clout?”
If that had happened, it would not be ok. But that is in no way what happened.
It was the policy of the US, as well as, the EU, and the World Bank to push for the removal of prosecutor Viktor Shokin. That policy was set long before Hunter Biden joined Burisma’s board. So Biden was bragging about doing his job, and as acting in the interest of the US and it’s allies. Trump was acting only in his own political interest.
HUNTER BIDEN WAS NEVER UNDER INVESTIGATION. That is worth repeating…HUNTER BIDEN WAS NEVER UNDER INVESTIGATION. A company, Burisma Holdings, for which his law firm had worked for years prior to his father’s election as VP (Hunter is a graduate of Yale School of Law) placed him on the board. Burisma Holdings has been under “investigation” by then prosecutor, Viktor Shokin (crony of then president and Putin puppet, Yanikovitch). The US, EU, and World bank agreed Shokin was like his boss enormously corrupt – he was found to have $23 MILLION stashed in a British Bank – and sought his ouster. That policy was set long before Hunter Biden joined Burisma’s board. Burisma – like other Ukrainian businesses – complained that shakedowns by Shokin made business impossible. And Shokin was eventually fired.
“Your “career diplomats” aren’t risking their jobs, they’re trying to put their party in a better position in this election as a trump impeachment secures a democrat getting the Oval Office.”
More than half of those who testified were originally appointed by republicans.
No. Socialism is ugly. This is nothing….. wait till 4 years from now.
Gov Cheese, hopefully, we can agree that trying to extort one’s way into keeping a grip on power is worse than our disagreements about what electing someone else besides Donald Trump for president will do to our country.
Yes kym. Trump is a crooked mofo. Most politicians are. I’m still voting red though. I don’t care if it’s a chimpanzee in a suit and tie.
Socialism. Like using “Qualified Opportunity Zone property” to use taxpayer money to build expensive high-rise condos that rich developers sell to rich customers while the ghettos rot.
Socialism for the rich, capitalism for the poor.
wonderful …. I can wait
So who is running for President for the Republican Party in 2020?????
???????????????
Wait, I thought this was about crab…………
