Video: Earth First! Humboldt at Scotia on August 15th

On August 15th, Earth First! Humboldt took action to block logging trucks from taking fallen trees to the mill yard. At two gates, a single person locked themselves to a triad of bicycles that had been locked together.

This video was shot at the 2nd gate where 87 year old Jack Nounan locked himself to bikes blocking access to the gate. Nounan explains why he is taking this action. He also describes the value he places in right livelihood.

At the end of the video, in the far distance, you can see the beginning of the arrest of Stanton Wood as he was on the phone to KMUD News explaining the activity of Earth First! Humboldt.

At the end of the day, HCSO issued a press release stating three people had been cited. Two of them were the individuals that had locked themselves to the bicycle blockades at each gate. They were released on site.  The only person booked into the correctional facility was Wood.  The press release accused Wood of using toxic substances during the event. An email from Lt. Sam Williams stated that feces were a part of the mix.

Others in the group told KMUD’s Lauren Schmitt the ‘toxic material’ was latex paint, peanut butter and honey. They denied the human feces allegation.

EF!Humboldt told KMUD News they want Humboldt Redwood Company to stop selling timber from forests on Rainbow Ridge as “sustainable yield.’ They say the stands currently being cut on Rainbow Ridge were previously unentered and that they should be designated ‘High Conservation Value.’

if it wasn’t for people standing up for Groves of ancient trees there would be nothing left. We pride ourselves in these few Redwood stands that are here, bringing in tourism to see a small portion of what is left of the ancient one’s. It saddens my heart to know that another large stand is being devastated not only for our children’s future but you should know how little is left! And how much everyone should care?

If you are so worried about the decline of old growth redwood trees, try getting some young ones and go plant them. Bitching does nothing. There are way more redwood trees left than you realize. Protesting does not solve anything, but getting arrested by chaining yourself to a gate, sitting in a tree, leave trash, standing in front of log trucks, chaining yourself to heavy equipment, etc. Only voting to change the future will make a difference.

I understand your frustrations ,but isn’t more inspiring to see people willing to risk it all for a good cause then risking all for that next high. Instead of taking the road of knowing it all if we actually supportive and educate each other who knows the limit to true change that could happen. Let’s not judge someone’s route lets support the cause .
Thank you

“Only voting to change the future will make a difference.”

~voting. Ahh, yes, voting. ‘Voting’ has brought us to this place of despair. Trading one master for another master doesn’t seem to be working for We, the People.

Next.

The biggest dream
The biggest prayer
That we well live in peace with each other
And in harmony with nature
The dawning of a new age
We got to get ourselves back to the garden
We are precious
And we have to protect the Ancient ones
In our hearts we know
We live here but for only a moment
Let us leave it better
Believe it possible
The destructive caterpillars turned into butterflies across Nation

Too bad no one was out protesting mountains tops being cleared by illegal growers. I have never seen one protest against that type of logger? Epic, Friends of the Eel River, etc. all turned a blind eye to the growers destroying our paradise because the money was coming in. Take a flight our of Garb or Fortuna and you will see how devastated our forests really are.

we have to thin the forest to save the forest… But redwoods are too rare to thin. Be about the forest, but be about overall forest health, not just hating

??This is agreeable. Clear out the some but not all of the undergrowth so that some of the natural ecosystem survives and helps promote healthy growth for the animal and other species of plants that are just as important.

The main issue is them logging in areas that have not been entered by logging companies these are ancient stands that do not need thinning

Respect to Jack Nounan, Stanton Wood, and others who stand up for what they believe in .. our California forests are a patchwork of bad forestry practices perpetuated by private timber companies.
Preserve old growth wherever it is, foster biodiversity and promote responsible stewardship of public and private lands.

Unless this stand has a history of fire suppression, it does not need “thinning”. Also remediating the damage of misguided fire suppression techniques does not equate to logging. Most of what needs to be removed is not good lumber, and for the sake of forest health most should be burned in place, not be removed to be sold for profit.

??Again I agree, but making the brush a little maintainable is a plus. And it is a job for someone without one.

Thank you Jack. People like Jack and the other defenders of the forest have been the few to actually act to stop the destructive actions of predatory companies that only care about the bottom dollar. The companies left to their own would have already clear cut all the forests in the country, destroying vital habitat and degrading the ability for humans and other species to survive. And the workers have the mentality that they are just doing as they are told, they have no sense of responsibility for their actions. And the police protect corporate assets, while allowing the public resources to further degrade. PS- the police have always sided with business interests as they attacked unions, environmentalists civil rights, etc. The crime that they don’t go after is the destruction of the environment which impacts all of us. “It’s difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it.” Sinclair Lewis

Saw a group of those dweebs making noise outside the jail on Friday. It looks like the movement is in serious decline. At least half were old hippies from the back-to-the-land generation. A problem recruiting young cannon fodder for the Mattole NIMBYs? EF! running short on money to support activists now that SoHum is no longer awash in pot money?

I’m in support. I happen to show it by commenting. But now that you mention it I’m going to try and see if I can donate 20$ before I go to work this Morning.

Thanks “Tiered if liberals” Way to remind me. Ill put the donation in your name so you can feel like your helping out the defenders as well.
And as a side note: anyone’s political views are none of your business unless they are running for public office or offer to share them with you . I’m tired of assumptions about “all you people”.
