Kym, I’ll increase my monthly donation if you fix your website.

Spend part of a day negotiating your stories and comments from someone else’s computer… if you haven’t already; it’s quite annoying.

Also, have you considered Disqus or the equivalent to run your comments?

Feel free to tell me to eff off.

This stories indicates 8 comments while displaying 3.

Otherwise, thanks for all your efforts,

Disqus is really awful. They use it over at LoCo, and I’m certainly glad it’s not here too. Constantly broken, slow, and annoying. These work great, other than not remembering your name for very long. I’m guessing there’s deleted, hidden, or moderation-pending comments to explain the count mismatch.

I don’t have any problems with Disqus, but something similar to help the comments flow. After 150, or so, cmoments the threads become so muddied it is impossible to know who is replying to whom.

A couple of non sequitur comments disappeared on this story, but they didn’t seem delete worthy.

I can list a few problems I have with it…
1) It often doesn’t load at all.
2) When it does load, it always takes way too long.
3) You can’t copy+paste into the text box properly. It’s not a normal, working, text box widget provided by the OS/widget library, rather it’s a bunch of javascript that attempts to look like one, while failing miserably. It has copy+paste problems, formatting problems, problems with \n vs \r\n, editing problems, and generally is awful, with both complicated and utterly novice errors, and doesn’t look like or interact like any other text widget on my system. Seriously, they re-implemented a textarea in javascript. Crack cocaine?
4) The box is on top, not on bottom. This is very significant despite seeming minor, as it discourages people from seeing if someone already started a thread on a similar topic that they might want to reply to instead of starting a new one.
5) Entirely dependent on bloated javascript.
6) Forgets my name/email almost as often as this one.
7) Makes me click three check boxes every time I post.
8) Contains advertising for their product and other services.
9) Expects people to create accounts.
10) Makes you click “read more” every time you see a long post.
11) Makes you click “load more comments” repeatedly, including every single time you go back to the page. Read another article, go back to that one… need to load all the comments again if you want to see if there’s new ones.
12) Attempts to do some crap with showing new comments as they’re written, which rarely works right for more than a few minutes, and you have to reload the page anyway. And, when it does work, it shows the comments in the wrong order, that is, differently than the order if you reloaded the page.
13) Makes your site dependent on a 3rd party service which could discontinue its service and delete all your comments at any time, or hold your comments ransom. Think it won’t happen? So did photobucket users.
14) Attempts to push social media crap.
15) Posting comments is very slow, and has a long limbo period where you’re not sure if your post worked or not. And, unlike here, reloading the page or such always loses your comment, rather than allowing you to try again.
16) Clicking any of the things you have to click (like “load more comments”) breaks firefox’s keyboard page navigation.
17) Loads a variety of tracking crap for other 3rd-party services, including sending everything you do to facebook, a corporation with well-documented severe privacy issues.
18) Has up/down voting crap that doesn’t accomplish anything.
19) Apparently, if you don’t have an adblocker (who the hell uses the internet without one?), it shows constant ads to users, and includes tracking by advertising networks. Their privacy policy also mentions they’ll do data processing to keep track of your gender, marital status, and every other thing they can think of to maximize the spam they hit you with.
20) The terms of service have a lot of restrictive things, for example, site owners are prohibited from copying the comments off their service. This is, of course, to make sure they can profit from them in perpetuity.
21) They push christian morality, like banning any pornographic or sexual content.
22) Can cost money. If you’re popular, they want a cut. And, of course, they can hold all your existing comments over you to make sure you pay it.
23) Phones home constantly whenever a page is open, wasting data usage.
24) A whole bunch of gripes I’ve had that I can’t remember right now.
25) Generally is awful in every way.

This site, however, works great. At least in terms of comments, that is – some things, like the about page, are completely broken. Comments are part of the page itself, load instantly, and everything works. My only complaints would be that it forgets your name after a while, and as you said, it doesn’t handle deep enough nesting of replies.

Don’t worry, that list is for loco’s comments, not your site. 🙂

Just a few of the reasons I don’t want to see Disqus here or anywhere else. heh.

As I said before, I’d offer to help, but I really don’t know wordpress, and wordpress really is an entire system apart from conventional web design…

i personally think it is always good to have a civilized discussion. the one thing about your complaint about saying there are more comments than what is showing, i think that might be because there are comments but we cant see them because they are still in moderation.

For the most part your site and it’s comment section is one of the more pleasant ones to navigate. Please don’t outsource to discus! Bushytails hits some of the many reasons why. I maintain wordpress and joomla sites, a phpbb forum and several informational old fashioned html / css sites as well. I boggles my mind that any problems you have with your site would cost 10k to fix, although I have no idea what your experience is with the backend or your host, so there’s that. You provide an excellent an valuable service, and your site layout is easy to use and navigate, which is rare. Thank you!

She seems to use a pretty basic wordpress setup. A fairly old, simple wordpress setup, without a lot of the horrible bloat of newer ones. I’m not sure why it’s so expensive, either. “You’re big, so we want more” might be part of it. Then again, all local IT stuff seems ungodly overpriced in general.

Maybe PGE was checking their lines. I am not a fan of them at all. Bad taste but I have my reasons. I hope and pray people and property stay safe. Hope others will send their good thoughts to the fire fighters, first responders, and victims of this horrific fire season. Stay safe for you only have one life. Scanner going nuts calling everybody out for help,

i personally have had almost half of these problems myself. one i dont think you know about is if you post something with the word “jew” too many times in the post it automatically deletes your post. just fyi. before a few months ago this site used to keep my name and email all the time, then it just changed.

well the mod never even saw it i think (as i have never had any problem with connie). i found out one day when i was reposting a news story and it used the word jew like twenty times. it disappeared immediately after letting me think i posted it.

On wildfireintel.org they’re saying 150 to 200 acres but they have retardant around 95% of the fire and the retardant lines are currently holding. I don’t have a clue if any of that is accurate, just what they’re saying on the forums. That was at sundown. If the winds don’t come up they should be able to contain this one.
