[UPDATE 6:43 a.m. Wednesday] Two Dogs Dead; One Injured After Multi Vehicle Crash on 101 Near Arcata Airport

Traffic Collision Car Accident Feature iconAt 9:44 p.m., two dogs were reported struck by a vehicle, according to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page. By 9:57, up to four vehicles and three dogs were reported involved.

The scanner report at 10 p.m. indicated that two of the dogs were dead and third is injured.

Officers are starting a traffic break in order to close the #2 (outside lane) northbound from Giuntoli in order to deal with the incident.

UPDATE 10:14 p.m.: There is a fourth dog missing. That dog is the mother of the other three. The dogs are German Shepherds. The closed lane is being reopened.

UPDATE 6:43 a.m. Wednesday: A reader commented with the following information:

No humans were hurt. No cars hit other cars. 2 dogs got hit and died. I pulled over when I saw the flashers and got out to help when the third dog came up to me injured but alive. A car ahead of me swerved into the grass in the middle of the highway because they completely ignored the flashers. When I looked up after dealing with the injured dog that car was gone so I assume they are fine. People seriously need to slow down when they see flashers lots of cars passed going at least 60 with 4 cars on the side of the road with flashers. Only 1 or 2 cars were involved I stopped to help and so did the car behind me that’s why it says 4 cars were involved. I feel very sorry for the family. I hope the missing one is found and that Avery survives.

Humboldt Paws Cause has a post about the dogs involved.

The Eureka Arcata Airport in McKinleyville. I agree with the poor dog comment, other not so much because all people are stupid, some subsets more than others.
It is against the law to hit a dog and not stop. It is heartless to just about wreck and continue on your merry way.

Arcata doesn’t have an airport. Anyone who knows the area calls it the McKinleyville Airport, unless you serve on the county board of supervisors.

Actually a lot of locals call the arcata airport the arcata airport, because it’s the arcata f****** airport. ACV baby, small planes all day!

Officially called California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport (Arcata/Eureka, CA, USA), but to book flights its Arcata airport, ACV.

So sorry for owners loss, it’s always heartbreaking.

I really hope the chp starts seriously patrolling that zone from hsu to Westhaven. The arcata chamber of commerce ought to take note too, i wont go to arcata to shop anymore as its way too easy to get hit by the stupid drivers there on highway&streets.
Another way hsu has let us all down, not teaching new students how dufferent driving here is from LA. Just a few pointers to new ones would help. Hsu students ought to get double fines after 2nd ticket. The amount of times someone with hsu parking pass have tailgated, changed lanes without looking, sped thru corridor at 70mph by me are too many to count.
Are we really going to spend a bazillion dollars for an overpass at indianola because of idiot drivers? At a spot where 101 will be under water in 5-10 years? Seems like itd be better to figure out how to keep 101 open in the coming years.

The overpass may be the start of raising that whole section of road. As the flats run right up to the hills, there are very limited options to avoiding rising water. Even the old highway (Myrtle Ave and Old Arcata Road) are not much higher than the coast and subject to run off that gets close to the road even now.

True. Its going to get soggy, and 101 is our only N-S lifeline. We could do nothing or……..?

The college? That’s all you got?. I’m a townie 5th gen. So many locals.went there. I went, transfered. Did not finish. I don’t know why it is a contest. If we did not have HSU, I don’t know, we could send a very large redwood dog, an origami crab, a blown up car, protesters smashed by a fallen tree. Loggers with a fallen tree on them, mill workers drinking themselves to death with park money. Homeless man runs into traffic, teepee burners, pulp mill smell.
People of color dead at a party. Eureka teen and Arcata man stabbed by a person of color who had parents who threw boiling water on him., a meth head man who had a wealthy mom from weed murder a priest in a very sick way, he was high on meth arrested and released in January, his mom turned him in in the priests car, pedophile priests, a drunk man killing a young woman , running dogs shot by rancher. Mother drunk in Fortuna driving very drunk, lying for months killing her daughter, wealthy from weed. Boyfriend knew. She wanted her son to smash it up and take the blame, bullied kids drinking, stealing , lawyers riding a horse to a bar., arrested during court appearance. Disbarred after shutting down, trimmers by the dozen. Dogs, cats, people drowning, kids taught racism by parents, kids in care. Adopted kids, kids shooting and stealing , mom’s who found child porn on shared computer, keeps quiet until her son molested her step grand daughter molested. embezzlers.. cats Dogs, farm animals, alt school in Eureka with cookbooks and
no stoves. Locals traveling in Yosemite Murdered hotel guests. Gay people. I can’t go on.

Henderson Center rules the accident stat. I dislike driving around there but winco and fin-n-feather are there. the crazy part is how many cars flip over at 25mph in Eureka (mainly Henderson Center).

Most of the accidents are caused by turning traffic and the Indianola intersection routinely gets overloaded with turning traffic during rush hour.

Sad,

thanks.

The chp needs to patrol that area more.

I never see them anymore.

If they need more officers then maybe money could be raised for that.

People from out of the area should be given pointers on how to drive locally; and the patrols should be out making sure they adhere to those pointers.

Yes. Hot wire is serious dog restraint. It’s relatively inexpensive. But it requires contact at least once or twice for the dog to take it seriously, not just associate a single spot with the zap.

McKinleyville has a runaway problem with loose dogs. The town’s even bigger problem is we’re told not to judge dog owners because some dogs are escape artists. These particular dogs reportedly (by Facebook users) regularly got out. I don’t know if that’s true, but a dog escaping once is really bad. There’s no excuse for multiple escapes. If you can’t control your dogs, rehome your dogs.

If the dogs’ owner can be identified, the driver’s insurance company will be sure to judge.

This makes me so angry and sad!! These dogs are out ALL THE TIME. I myself found them running as a pack down McKinleyville Ave once, and returned them. Months later, I witnessed the woman owner track them down on Bates in her minivan. The owners knew their dogs got out of their broken gate, which was never fixed. Now not only did the dogs die violent, horrible deaths, the poor drivers who hit the dogs had to suffer through that experience too. This was preventable. I am so disappointed in the owners.

Sorry to hear some of the dogs died. Wonder if the were strays or were owned by someone. People that have dogs should be more responsible about keeping them in the yard, tied up or in the house. Thank you to the lady that pulled over to help. Glad the jackass that did not see your flashers until the last second missed your car.

I hope the person that let these dogs roam free has to pay for all the damages to the cars and has the rest of their dogs taken away. they could have killed a human, they should be held responsible for gross negligence, if the above is correct about the fact that this has happened before they definitely should be charged.

If the person who hit the dogs sustained damage to their vehicle, the dog owners are responsible for repairs. I know because my neighbor had to repair my car.

I am sad for the dogs, but I don’t understand how they were not in the owner’s control – did they escape? Or just not leashed?

Unfortunately the fact is they lived in a yard very close to McKinleyville Ave and the gate is broken and holes were dug under it and not filled, so they escaped a lot.

I had a Boxer and Bull Terrier(sp) cross, they got out numerous times–UNTILL–I put a 2 strand hot wire around my fence–and closed off the gate with a removable line(ingress/regress for me)–That solved the problem–,even when it wasn’t on.Boxer got bit in the butt 2 times,Kepie–once on the nose, and, once on her tail–no more tryen or destroyen the fences::–.Yep and I put it in with low expense–.Used black plastic pipe–to measure how far from the fence(measured for larger dogs heights, and a lower one to make sure they did not go lower–.Solved the getten out problem for me,and the leaven the gate open problem–umhumm–.Whjen nI bought the electric fence charger the guy at Nielsens asked if I wanted a doggie charger–my reply–No I want one that would knock down a bull, they won’t try it more than once–.My wrong they both did 2 times–and never had a fence problem–or neighbor problem after that. That probably saved their lives::::

Yup, that is how we keep our dogs AND goats in/out of our yard. I actually use 7 strands, it encircles my entire yard, and also the goat yard. Goats and Dogs respect it even when it is off. It also keeps the bears and mountain lions out. Bears have tested it 2 times and I never see them anymore ;P
The lion got sort of tangled up in it, screamed and fled when it got loose. I use the fence charger for large animals. It tells you how much it will charge it for what distance divided by how many strands you use.
It is probably the only reason we still have chickens… the chicken yard is in the middle of the goat pasture.
Hot fence all the way for keeping pets and livestock safe and contained properly.

These dogs were running down central last night by the golf course. As I was driving, a vehicle coming the other way flashed their lights to warn me. They then ran into the trees where there is a well used homeless encampment. I thought they made it to their owners.

To everyone who drives a vehicle on our public roadways: ANYTIME YOU APPROACH FLASHING RED LIGHTS SLOW DOWN BEFORE YOU REACH THEM UNTIL AFTER YOU ARE SAFELY BEYOND THEM! Out of consideration for whoever is having some type of emergency situation drive by at a safe speed. I was recently at a roadside hazardous situation with multiple vehicles using their hazard blinkers and not one passing vehicle slowed down at all. It was unbelievable to me.

Sleepy,

thanks,
they should have an officer out there ticketing everyone who doesn’t slow down for flashing lights.

And if they don’t have enough officers money should be raised to hire one.

If somebody gets a ticket for driving recklessly, they’ll slow down or go broke.

They need to decrease the speed to 50 there and patrol it so that is adhered to.

Poor dogs.

Kudos to the person who stopped.

And for those who didn’t try to help, they should go back to where they came from.

This was entirely the dog owner’s fault. Those dogs should have never been on the highway especially during the night.
