At approximately 12:55 p.m., a tanker truck went off Hwy 101 and over the embankment onto Hwy 271. It is completely blocking the 271 about a mile south of the Humboldt County line just south of Cooks Valley.

“The truck is leaking onto the roadway,” according to a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol.

A Hazardous Materials Spill Report states that about 50 gallons of diesel have leaked. However, the fuel hasn’t reached the Eel River at this point.

Cal Fire is on the scene along with the CHP and the Department of Fish and Wildlife is responding.

There were no injuries and no other vehicles were involved.

UPDATE 8:17 p.m.: The roadway is open.

well considering how people drive, when they pass and then just about hit the person they passed as they cut back infront of them. Which seems to be becoming a common problem for humboldt drivers these days…

I think they stopped making Driver’s Ed a requirement to graduate high school about thirty years ago, and it could be that the trucking companies are preferring cheap drivers and/or DMVs aren’t demanding enough by way of licensing truckers.

I just know that driving anywhere, especially at night or in inclement weather, never ceases to stop offending my sensibilities nowadays. People forget they’re driving lethal weapons and I’m shocked by how few seem to have even a rudimentary grasp of physics.

My old friend just waves his arms and insists it’s good for cleaning the gene pool, but he’s forgetting about the innocent genes also being removed. 🙁

I totally agree with you. Young people are NOT getting the Driver’s Ed anymore in High School. Such little Education is required anymore to set loose, inexperienced, ignorant (that they are in control of a massive, fast moving, weapon) young drivers. It is frightening. Safe Journeys everyone. Stay alert and drive defensibly !

Trucking companies are critically shorthanded. They’re probably pushing their drivers for what they’re worth. And they can’t afford to be picky these days.

I’m always happy to see Willie’s post. He usually has postive words to say. (They will dig the dirt up and carry it away.)

Well that’s a bulk grain trailer, not a fuel trailer, so any fuel is coming from the trucks saddle tanks.

Somebody, get the driver a clean pair of pants and he or her will be on their way. Glad it ended ok. Accidents suck.

Everyone should be taking a defensive driver course. If not before getting a license but licensed drivers. Nothing better for safety for yourself and others.
