[UPDATE 5:55 p.m.] Lights Out, Garberville: PG&E Is De-Energizing Lines
PG&E Asks Southern Humboldt County Customers to Prepare for a Power Outage Tonight Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is requesting customers in Benbow, Garberville, Redway and Whitethorn prepare for a power outage overnight tonight for timely safety work. PG&E will need to de-energize the lines impacting approximately 2,719 customers in those communities from 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 9. This is necessary to make repairs at the Garberville substation.
“We understand the inconvenience a power outage can create, so we are doing everything we can to notify our customers in the Garberville area, so they can prepare as soon as possible and stay safe,” said Carl Schoenhofer, Senior Manager for PG&E’s Humboldt Division.
Tips for Preparing for an Outage
- Have fresh batteries on hand for flashlights. Please do not use candles for fire risk. If you must use candles, keep them away from drapes, lampshades and small children. Do not leave candles unattended.
- Don’t use grills or other outdoor appliances or equipment indoors for space heating or cooking, as these devices may omit carbon monoxide. Customers with generators should make sure they are properly installed by a licensed electrician. Improperly installed generators pose a significant danger to crews working on power lines. Operate your generator outside. Never operate it inside a building or garage.
- You may want to unplug or turn off all electrical appliances to avoid overloading circuits and to prevent fire hazards when power is restored. Simply leave a single lamp on to alert you when power returns. Turn your appliances back on one at a time when conditions return to normal.
- Check and restock your emergency kits with flashlights, batteries, bottled water, non-perishable foods, medicines, etc. Also, ensure a portable, battery-operated radio, TV or NOAA radio is on hand.

UPDATE 5:55 p.m.: We confirmed that the outage is happening with Deanna Contreras, a PG&E spokesperson. She said that this situation was urgent and they didn’t have time to do their normal protocol like sending out mail first. But, she said, most people who will be affected have either had a robo call or PG&E doesn’t have a current number for them.
Unfortunately, she said, the call center answering the 1 800 number may not have the latest information and may erroneously be telling callers there is no planned outage. At least one reader has been told that there is no outage. But, Contreras reaffirms there is a planned outage.

Thanks for the info KYM. PGE never sent me a notice in the mail about this.
I just spoke to a representative and she said that this was urgent and they didn’t have time to do their normal protocol. But, most people who will be affected have either had a robo call or PG&E doesn’t have a current number for them.
Why was it urgent? That’s important to know!
They just alerted me on my cellphone.
Thank you, Kym. This is the first I’ve heard of this, and they have my number. I’m glad you’re here to run interference!
Well this officially sucks, my water is pumped uphill so I’ll be out of water through the night. Wish they’d have warned us sooner.
Theyve called some people i know for sure.
Hey better lights out than have some ancient pge part fail and burn our towns down.
Heres to deregulation in the hopes of no more monopolies especially in public services. Lets open the market again so there are more businesses offering the service which creates competition.
If youre tired of bailing out these big monopolizing corporations, lets demand a change to corporate personhood and the corporate charters. More competition in the marketplace benefits consumers. Monopolization is happening in every industry. Keep this pge situation in mind as you think about which businesses to support. I would not want our local pge employees to lose their jobs, hopefully dereg would bring more jobs!
Im sorry but a huge business like pge cant make sure their 800 number info is correct? Really?
“In 2017, Geisha Williams, PG&E’s chief executive officer, was awarded $8.6 million in total direct compensation, according to a PG&E filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Her 2017 pay package was 106 percent higher than the $4.2 million in total pay she received in 2016.”

I got a telephone call about 5:30 this evening (landline). It was stated that the outage for GBV was going to be from 1:00 A.M. to 6:00 A.M.
That Indo gonna get nice n frosty over night
I’m all for busting up the monopolies, but I would also worry that a competitive market could cut corners on safety costs in a race to be the cheapest.
There are some infrastructure/public needs that, like roads, the marketplace does not best answer.
A bloated, for-profit, government approved monopoly like PG&E, a monstrousity which doesn’t answer to it’s customers and bullies the state is certainly not working. But, I would also fear the free market’s solution.
?At least there trying to get things fixed in this crappy weather before it dries up and they start handing out burn permits.
