Congratulations to Rachel Galliani’s 8th grade students from Toddy Thomas Middle School who won FIRST PLACE in this year’s Garrett Morgan Symposium!

The Garrett Morgan Symposium is a national competition aimed at challenging children to come up with innovative transportation improvements. First place includes $1,000 to the class, and certificates for all the participants.

The class is working on an idea to reduce the carbon footprint of their school by installing piezoelectric floor tiles in high-traffic areas around campus to harness human-generated power for an electric school bus. They presented their idea via live stream on April 12 at the Caltrans District Office in Eureka.
