Body of Missing Ruth Lake Boater Recovered

The body of the boater who disappeared after a vessel capsized on Ruth Lake Friday night has been recovered, bringing a tragic end to a search that spanned more than two days.

According to a GoFundMe, Dylan Ashbury was fishing with two friends Friday evening when their boat capsized. The two others made it safely to shore, but Dylan did not.

An extensive search began immediately, with the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office requesting assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard early Saturday morning. A Coast Guard helicopter conducted multiple search passes over the lake before returning to base because of low fuel and deteriorating weather conditions. Trinity County Sheriff’s deputies, Search and Rescue volunteers and dive teams continued searching throughout the weekend.

Late Sunday afternoon, a second dive team located Dylan’s body approximately 40 yards from where the boat capsized in deep water, according to the family’s statement.

“Our hearts are shattered, and we’re uncertain if our family will ever fully recover from the profound loss of Dylan,” Maxwell wrote.

The family expressed gratitude to everyone who assisted in the search and offered support during the ordeal, giving special thanks to the Trinity County dive team.

“We are incredibly grateful for their dedication and compassion in helping to find him and bring him home for a proper memorial service,” the family wrote.

A GoFundMe has been established to help Dylan’s mother, Lisa Peeples, with funeral expenses.

The fundraiser describes Dylan as “one of a kind,” remembering his laugh, hugs, and “kind and caring heart.”

“The world was a better, brighter place with him in it and there will be a spot in our hearts for him that nobody can ever replace,” the family wrote. “We love you Dylan! You’ll always be our favorite Dyl Pickle.”
