Humboldt Community Animal Response Team (HumCART) is set to host a Large Animal Technical Rescue Certification training in Eureka this upcoming weekend, May 30 & 31.Taught by Gary Johnson of Res-Q-Fast, this training is intended for local firefighters, veterinarians, animal shelter staff, public safety officials and others who would benefit from this specialized training.

The training will be hands-on, eight hours per day, for two days. Public safety volunteers such as volunteer firefighters, shelter or rescue volunteers and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers are also encouraged to register. Humboldt County contains thousands of large animals – both livestock and pets – which must be considered when bolstering community emergency preparedness.

“As it stands today, not one person in Humboldt County is certified in Large Animal Technical Rescue. We are very excited to have Res-Q-Fast up here to change that, since an emergency situation involving livestock can be hazardous to both the humans and animal(s) involved,” said Alyssa Alvarez, Volunteer Coordinator with HumCART.

This is a California State Fire Training FSTEP certified course. Only students that have a State Rope Rescue Technician certificate will receive a State Fire Training certificate. All others will receive a ResQFAST certificate meeting the State and NFPA standards. Course cost is $650 per student, and you can register at Resqfast.com. Don’t forget to fill-in your agency/organization, as you may be eligible for a scholarship through Halter Project to cover the cost of the course.

This training is made possible by sponsor HalterProject.org, an organization dedicated to the preparedness, safety and welfare of people and animals in emergencies and disasters. Halter Project and HumCART are two of near thirty animal disaster preparedness groups in California.

Humboldt Community Animal Response Team is a newly forming organization dedicated to education, training and emergency efforts for animals, pets and livestock; HumCART is not a rescue. Learn more about HumCART and volunteer at link.tree/humboldtcart or email [email protected].

At first, I was afraid that the picture was of a deceased horse from Miranda’s! Glad to know that it isn’t!
