In Honor of Memorial Day Some Spent Saturday Setting Flags at Fortuna Cemeteries

While many community members were preparing their camping gear, boats and ATV’s to enjoy the first weekend of summer a few dozen citizens in Fortuna spent Saturday morning paying their respects to those whose lives made those freedoms possible.Brianna Mangan and her aunt, Vonnie Carter
Area residents from Cub Pack & Scout Troop 47, American Legion Auxiliary, American Legion Post 205, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2207, and their families participated in placing American flags at the graves of military veterans buried in Fortuna area cemeteries.Joshua Evans and Scout Leader Jacque Murphy
The ceremony is an annual event that is performed to remember the sacrifices of the men and women buried in our nation’s cemeteries. It is also a way of remembering each of them with respect and gratitude for their service to our nation and to its citizens.Honoring the flag.

Thanks for your efforts from your fellow flag-placing volunteers at Myrtle Grove Memorial Cemetery in Eureka. Cemetery established in 1861. Memorial Day (originally Decoration Day) flag placement and patriotic observances since 1882.
