Virginia’s Supreme Court has struck down a voter-approved plan to redraw the state’s congressional maps to benefit Democrats. It was a major setback for Democrats.
In an opinion released today, a majority of the justices said a referendum passed by voters last month was unconstitutional.
What is really sad is that so many people think doing something they believe is basically wrong is okay if it’s done for the right reasons. As if that wasn’t an oxymoron. I blame leaded gas for the widespread drop in intelligence.
I believe that violence is wrong, but if I’m attacked I’m going to fight back.
It was wrong of Trump and Texas to have started this whole thing, but the Democrats’ attempts to balance things are justified– so long as they’re written to be short term, as California’s is.
What really needs to happen is for the whole country to agree upon a system of neutral committees drawing electoral maps.
Of course, I have little hope of this happening.
I believe that one day, when a post-mortem is done on this country, the redistricting battle will be seen as a major contributor to our downfall.
What elected officials in Virginia did was found by their own state supreme court to be illegal. It wasn’t a gray area. They clearly violated the law.
If Republicans do it, it’s fine. If Democrats do it, it’s wrong. At least according to SCOTUS.
