Note the time on the original booking sheet for that information. AI can make errors — if you notice one, please reach out to us at [email protected]. Additionally, if a charge is later dismissed, reduced, or you are formally cleared and can provide official documentation (such as a court order or a letter from the District Attorney’s Office), we will update the log to reflect that change in status. What’s interesting about Trump’s reply is he didn’t contest or deny being called a traitor.

Yes, now let’s try to decide who’s evil and who’s a hero.

Exactly, Bill — and history usually sorts that out pretty clearly. The ones who defended the lies, the censorship, the harm… and mocked the people who were right all along. We’re already seeing it happen in real time.

That’s one. A. Cook is the other. That guy has been in the booked sections dozens of times in just a few years. Multiple DUIs yet still manages to get hold of a vehicle somewhere, somehow and get another one. Court system just keeps letting him go. I’ve had the unpleasant experience of just being in his way a couple times at Old Town events where he decides to snap on people.

he was booked over 20 times just in 2012 which landed him on the Frequent Flyer list LOCO use to make. maybe the LEOs feel bad the DA didn’t charge anyone for (what appears online to be) the murder of his kid. it is still crazy how many times he has been arrested, it has to be in the 100s.

Independent Bookstore Day: Bookshop.org founder on how small retailers are taking on Amazon After 20 years of declining numbers, indie booksellers in the U.S. have come ‘roaring back,’ says Andy Hunter.

https://www.fastcompany.com/91529634/independent-bookstore-day-bookshop-org-founder-on-how-small-retailers-are-taking-on-amazon

“I was watching as half of the bookstores in the country went out of business as Amazon grew,” he says. “There were over 5,000 bookstores in the American Booksellers Association in 1995, which is one year after Amazon launched. By 2019, that had gone down to 1,889, so more than half of them disappeared.”

“Our goal is to help independent local bookstores get their fair share of online sales, which would end up being maybe 10% of Amazon’s market share,” he says. “And right now we’re at about 2%, so we have a long way to go. But a lot of people didn’t even think we could ever get 1%.”

Bookshop.org is an online retail space to buy books while supporting your favorite independent bookstore.

I remember Amazon when it was an independent bookseller itself in Seattle.

Jeff Bezos left a Wall Street investment firm in 1994 to start online bookseller Amazon.com in Seattle, where, thanks primarily to the presence of Microsoft, software engineers were plentiful. Shortly after developing a beta version of his website at a rental house in Bellevue, Bezos moved Amazon into cramped quarters in the SODO neighborhood south of downtown Seattle. Amazon.com officially launched on July 16, 1995, selling $12,000 worth of books in its first week. Business grew quickly, and in 1998 Amazon relocated to the old U.S. Marine hospital on Beacon Hill. By 1999, Amazon had more than 10 million customers and was the world’s largest online retailer.

Birth of an Idea

Jeff Bezos (b. 1964) grew up in Houston and graduated from Princeton University in 1986. With a degree in electrical engineering and computer science in hand, Bezos then headed to Wall Street, where he spent five years with different financial companies before landing a job with D. E. Shaw and Company. DESCO, as it was known, was unique among investment firms. Its founder, David E. Shaw, had been a computer-science professor at Columbia University. Shaw’s expertise led to the creation of an innovative and technology-driven approach to investing. Computers and formulas were the firm’s bread and butter in reading opportunities and trading in global markets. “David Shaw was the one who revolutionized Wall Street by introducing data. And I think Jeff really embraced that, that idea that, ‘hey, if you have data, ultimately, you win,'” said former Amazon chief scientist Andreas Weigend (“Amazon Empire …”).

California billionaire tax gathers enough signatures for November showdownThe healthcare union backing the measure said it collected 1.5 million names — well beyond the 875,000 required to qualify for the ballot.

https://sfstandard.com/2026/04/26/california-billionaire-tax-2026/

“A very small group of the most controversial billionaires on the planet tried to stop Californians from being able to save their local emergency rooms and hospitals — but our current signature tally proves front-line healthcare workers will prevail in bringing this commonsense proposal to voters,” Billionaire Tax Now spokesperson and SEIU-UHW Chief of Staff Suzanne Jimenez said in a statement Sunday. “When our growing coalition files these signatures, David will have won the first round against Goliath, but healthcare workers and our allies won’t quit until we fully protect our patients from the looming healthcare disaster that will be caused by $100 billion in cuts to California healthcare.”

Yes, Swiss scientist Fritz Zwicky coined the term “dark matter” which is impressive, but he also coined the term “spherical bastard” to describe people who are bastards no matter which way you look at them, and I think that should be celebrated more.

What happens when you let AI have full control of your company’s production data base?

POOF!

“PocketOS is a SaaS platform that services car rental businesses. It used the AI coding agent Cursor, running Anthropic’s flagship Claude Opus 4.6. The business also relies on Railway, a cloud infrastructure provider that is generally regarded to be ‘friendlier’ than the likes of AWS. However, Crane reckons this pair created a recipe for disaster.

“Yesterday afternoon, an AI coding agent — Cursor running Anthropic’s flagship Claude Opus 4.6 — deleted our production database and all volume-level backups in a single API call to Railway, our infrastructure provider,” sums up the PocketOS boss. “It took 9 seconds.””

Once when running month-end processing I accidentally deleted the entire database — typed in DEL *.* wrong place. There was no backup — it had failed. I immediately typed in UNDELETE. All was well…

ALWAYS have a backup. We had three. One on-site for quick restore. I took one home every night. The third was FedEx Overnight to remote office…

In fact, I was hired and began my career there because of a backup failure that almost tanked the entire business. There was a joke about me being hired to run around making backups…

But what happens if AI does something similar, backup or not, in a situation where it triggers immediate real world, not just accounting, actions? Like stops medical devices or rerouts air traffic control? People can be awfully creative in finding ways to screw up. I suspect “AI agents” will be even better ar it?

I suspect that eventually such errors will be mostly prevented but until then it’s a learning curve.

Those problems are not only inherent in “AI”, but also in any engineered design.

In 1970s Dad designed a discrete clock circuit for a very popular economy digital voltmeter that used one component less than other designs, saving a lot of cost, resources, labor, etc. over thousands of units. Turned out 1 in 5000 times when powered up the circuit would be in a static state — it wouldn’t start. Powering down and restarting always worked.

You don’t think there will be enough of these, and it would only take one that is serious enough, for government to legislate the crap out of the companies selling such systems?

I never created any such system but my- uh hum- creative impulse behavior has broken a few. If I scare myself, the idea of a super-screw up is much more frightening.

I’m agreeing with you. 🙂

I used to work for a company that designed and manufactured hospital communication equipment — intercom and those code red switches you see nurses hit in emergencies & etc.. Extremely rigorous testing by UL to obtain UL approval. Regulations up the yinyang. Rigorous required quality control test procedures for each and every item.

Your concerns are very very real. Not only with AI. The unforeseen is, well, always unforeseen.

I should have posted a link for this, so when I went looking for one I found out how easy it is to be mislead even by genuine, unedited video. Here’s the first scene that I was referring to.

https://youtube.com/shorts/ubXm0vk9b3Q?si=d4myUDixdirOWED2

Then I found another version that changes the story.

https://youtu.be/kBS9TRxKO20?si=H1xQzfqPS4XM6JED

In the wider shot, you can see that his behavior wasn’t much out of line. Lots of people weren’t taking it seriously either. The woman in the red dress is practically begging to be shot.
