Sequoia Park Zoo Hosting Earth Day Celebration April 26th

This is a press release from the Sequoia Park Zoo:

Join Sequoia Park Zoo for our annual Earth Day celebration and Party for the Planet on Sunday, April 26, 2026 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Presented by Sequoia Park Zoo’s Conservation Council, Party for the Planet includes a native plants giveaway, complimentary animal trading cards and nature journals, native animal keeper talks, conservation stations, City Nature Challenge scavenger hunt, education activities, community organizations, and more!

Since 2017, Sequoia Park Zoo has been committed to showcasing and promoting native plants through our Native Plants Initiative, and the majority of Zoo grounds are now proudly landscaped with plants native to the redwood region. Planting natives is one of the best ways to create space for pollinators and other wildlife and encourage the biodiversity they support.

As part of the celebration, and in honor of Arbor Day, Eureka Sequoia Garden Club will be planting and dedicating a native red twig dogwood (Cornus sericea), generously donated by community member Karen Angel, adjacent to the Zoo’s bear habitat.

“There are so many ways to participate this year,” says Jim Campbell-Spickler, Sequoia Park Zoo Director. “Guests can come early for the bioblitz, pick up a free native plant or nature journal during the day, or download iNaturalist and become a community scientist in your own neighborhood.”

Sequoia Park Zoo is also hosting the fourth annual free community bioblitz on Sunday, April 26, 2026 from 8 to 11 a.m. Community scientists of all ages and abilities are invited to join the Zoo and identify plants, animals, and fungi. Check redwoodzoo.org/calendar for event details.

Anyone visiting Sequoia Park can contribute to this bioblitz on iNaturalist by joining the project “2026 Sequoia Park Zoo Bioblitz” at https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/2026-sequoia-park-zoo-bioblitz. Additionally, any iNaturalist observations made over the weekend will be automatically catalogued and represent Humboldt County in the global City Nature Challenge – helping us make an impact on how scientists across the world study biodiversity and our relationship with nature.

Sequoia Park Zoo is proud to partner with conservation organizations to host Party for the Planet and offer this fun and family-friendly opportunity to connect with the environment, celebrate native plants and pollinators, and take action for wildlife and wild places.
