According to the governor’s office, the proclamations are intended to support recovery efforts tied to several severe weather events and a January fire, allowing access to state assistance and resources.
One proclamation specifically addresses the late December 2025 storms, which brought heavy rain, mountain snow, and strong winds between December 16 and December 26. The storms caused widespread damage, including impacts to the state highway system in Mendocino County and neighboring areas.
In that proclamation, Newsom determined that the magnitude of the storm damage exceeded the capacity of local governments to respond effectively, requiring coordinated state support. The order directs state agencies to assist in response and recovery efforts and authorizes requests for federal aid to repair damaged infrastructure, including highways.
A separate emergency proclamation was issued for the City of Arcata following a five-alarm fire that broke out January 2, 2026, in the downtown area. The fire, described as three interconnected blazes, damaged multiple commercial and residential buildings and led to the collapse of several large structures.
Officials noted that the aftermath of the Arcata Fire includes problems that continue to affect the community such as site stabilization, dust control, potential asbestos exposure, and monitoring of stormwater runoff for contamination in nearby creeks and waterways.
As with the storm-related declaration, Newsom stated that the severity of the Arcata Fire overwhelmed local response capabilities, necessitating state-level assistance. The proclamation authorizes the use of state personnel, equipment, and resources to aid recovery efforts.
The governor’s office said similar emergency declarations were also issued for other counties impacted by earlier storms, including Imperial, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Sonoma, and Ventura counties.
These emergency proclamations allow impacted jurisdictions to access funding and support through the California Disaster Assistance Act and other state programs as recovery continues.

Where is California’s 180 billion its spent on the high speed rail huh NEWSOM. What a crook.
Are you saying it’s in Fortuna; haha?
Obviously you have not seen the 53 completed projects that cahsr has publicly posted online. Duh
The memes you repeat often make me think you watch Fox news.
Didn’t Newsom declare the Altadena and Palisades destruction disasters? Only 34 homes have been rebuilt in 15 months. Over 10,000 structures were destroyed.
Arcata is doomed if the response in LA is an indicator.
And if High Speed Rail is an indicator.
And if butterfly bridges are an indicator.
Democrats allow very little to be built but oversee the destruction of much.
The delays in Altadena are the result of insurance company f*ckery not the government, read up .. https://calmatters.org/economy/2026/01/insurance-after-los-angeles-fires/
As a reminder, democrats have generally favored stronger regulation of the insurance industry while republicans tear down the guardrails every chance they get. If you have a problem with the pace of progress in Altadena, look no further than the GOP and regulatory capture they encourage.
They will pay billions to fix things. All to salaries for people to figure out what to do. And do nothing.
Discussions and planning stages must be thoroughly analyzed and debated by various focus groups at multiple scales to ensure that community values and goals are being properly addressed with an understanding towards inclusivity…etc etc etc…
IMHO:
YEE HAH ! OPEN THE DOOR TO GRANT MONIES !!! LET ‘ER RIP !!!
That stinking pile of toxic waste is still just sitting there in downtown Arcata stinking up the neighborhood. Thank You wonderful insurance companies! You really do care so much….
It will take about 10 years to go through the ‘various’ court litigations…
And our community priorities are to make sure the insurance companies continue to make profits…
I’d love to see Arcata residents actually finally do something productive AND revolutionary. Knock down the fence and start hauling off that stenchy waste in open opposition to Business As Usual. They could even wear Arab costumes and carry signs while doing it. But no- they will stand around protesting a block away on the plaza while that pile remains for many many months….Ar-Queda!
Funny- the downvotes for suggesting actual productive and revolutionary action which would inspire communities across the country and move the needle forward in a meaningful direction…these people think themselves caring progressives but are only counter-revolutionaries. We need PUNK ACTION now more than ever!
I haven’t noticed it being particularly smelly except maybe in the rain. It is hard to look at.
And yes, our wonderful insurance companies <3 their profits so, so much, more than anything. I hope we all find someone to look at us the way insurance companies look at their profits. /sarcasm
