Surely this is a one-off event.
Oh, wait…
Mexican authorities have claimed that at least half a million firearms are smuggled into Mexico from the United States each year. The unrelenting pace and volume of this flow has earned it the name the “Iron River.” https://www.visionofhumanity.org/the-iron-river-flow-of-weapons-across-the-us-mexico-border/#:~:text
I wonder if Canada and Mexico will threaten to use their militaries to cut off the supply at its source.

An Authoritarian grab fest? Trump has no interest in international laws regarding sovereignty based on his comments. If we take Canada Trump will have to share with his Puppet Master Putin. Putin will want some Epstein Files return on investment.

Folks casually talking about taking other people’s lands are troll bait.

Um….outside of the 2 Senators each, Mexico would have the highest Electoral College representation and the most state representatives. 4x that of California. Canada would be the 2nd most. They’ll be determining your next presidents.

Well Mexico comes with a war with drug cartels. That might be a problem even if they wanted it. But Canada? Canada comes with Quebec and the constant francophile versus anglophile battles, Nunavut and the Trudeaus. They’d take us down in three months.

Hmm… Wonder what the Canadians would do about that long border? Since they, and for that matter Mexico, have much more restrictive immigration policies than the US?

Remember when Obama had Eric Holder set up the Fast and Furious operation to smuggle firearms from the US to Mexico? Were they ever held accountable for that (or any of the resultant crimes committed with those firearms)?

So we can all agree now that just because guns are illegal doesn’t mean there won’t be a black market for them and it won’t be the white guy who goes to church on Sunday who’s the problem.

Not quite right. There has been a “freeze” on new purchases transfers, and importation (in response to an extent from guns brought in from the US.)

Existing owners can keep them and even inherit them. Hand guns are classified as restricted and owners have to have licenses and register with the Mounties.

Maybe CS’s use might have come about because he wasn’t an immigrant into Canada. (Whoops- turns out that is what he was- he immigrated from Florida to Canada but why he was tried in the US?). He was just an cross border trucker. All the news articles are mighty sketchy about this man. His name is of Turkish origin but his place of birth never seems to get mentioned. Wouldn’t it be a hoot if he was an illegal immigrant into the US then into Canada? Or even legal immigrant to both?

The world uses the term illegal immigrant in which illegal is a reasonable distinction from legal immigrant.

What happens when business starts leaving town and you want to have even more people move into it? You get Seattle. 35% office vacancy rate and higher rents and taxes for everybody. But hey, crime rate is down, so there’s that.

In Downtown Seattle’s 2025 report, there are several positive trends.“We are going in the right direction to making sure downtown is safe and healthy and clean and welcoming for everybody,” Scholes said.

But the decrease in job growth is still a glaring issue. The report shows 35% of Seattle’s office and retail spaces are sitting empty. “We are at a fragile point; it’s important to note we have not grown jobs in the last three years,” Scholes said. He tells us the Emerald City lost more than 13,000 jobs in 2025. He cites high taxes and salary requirements as the main problems.

“We are very concerned with the significant new taxes our city has put in place on employers in the last few years.” In addition to several other taxes, the 5% Social Housing Tax on employee compensation exceeding $1 million also kicked in this year.
He says jobs are moving to Bellevue and other cities to escape the rates.
“We’ve made it too expensive and difficult,” Scholes said. “All of those folks have other choices.”

Scholes said they’re asking city officials to reconsider the tax rates slapped on businesses in hope they city’s economy doesn’t tank in the future.

Take note Eureka city council, just in case you needed a reminder why people are moving out of city limits. Or why stacking another 1000 people in Old Town isn’t going to work out well if there’s no jobs for them.

But don’t you find it odd he towers above both parents? By a foot or so? Apparently his height is why he would get an exemption. No uniforms, vehicles or equipment for such tall people. Besides it spoils the uniform look of massed troops.

BS. Barron is between 6-7 and 6-9. Max height for army enlistment is 6-8. He could easily get in if he wanted to.

When my niece was accepted at the naval academy, she got a waver for her height and she was so small that all her uniforms had to be custom fit. Nothing off the shelf fit her. Here she is drilling her squad. Her size is an asset in the cramped space of a missile submarine where she now serves.

The limit is 6’8″. And as for this guy’s height, I only know what read- that he’s over that. At his age like to still add a bit. This is not one of those opinion things. He either is or isn’t. And outrage effects nothing.

How did she manage that? Although I can see the Navy having a smaller problem (yup I know) with small people due to their cramped spaces. Submariners are always the cultural oddballs even in the Navy, they have an even lower height limit than the rest. NUBs better be tough though. So good for her. I remember when women were barred from subs because they might (gasp) bump into men in passing.

But the point was Trump the Younger getting an exception from the draft. Not that he couldn’t volunteer.

As is true for the Bidens, Obamas, Newsom, etc. In fact less than 30 of the 200 plus Democrats in the House have served in the military. Which is not that bad except for their penchant for belittling those who have.

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Escalating his attacks on Pope Leo XIV, Donald J. Trump claimed on Thursday that the pontiff’s election last year was “totally rigged.”
“There were a lot of ballots cast against him that were just burned,” he said. “You could see the smoke coming from the Vatican.”
Trump blasted Leo as “a terrible person and very ungrateful, quite frankly,” arguing that “he never would have become Pope without my help.”
“It was my idea to send JD to Rome in 2025,” Trump explained. “If he hadn’t gone, Pope Francis would still be alive and Leo would still be a crummy cardinal.”

In response the Vatican released a meme of Trump being struck by lightning while golfing.

According to Chat AI.

This looks like Foamflower.

  • The airy clusters of tiny white, star-like flowers on tall, thin stems are characteristic.
  • The low, basal leaves are lobed and somewhat maple-like, growing close to the ground.
  • It commonly grows in shady, moist woodland areas—exactly like the setting in your photo (looks like a forest understory).

You can download a pic to most AI sites and they will identify plants, Best to double check though.

Based on the image provided, this plant appears to be Pacific Footleaf (scientific name: Petasites frigidus var. palmatus), also commonly known as Western Coltsfoot or Palmate Coltsfoot.

I would go with the Gemini answer
as it is common among redwoods.

For negative voter:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Coast#Geology_and_climate

The Lost Coast consists of undivided Cretaceous marine metasedimentary and sedimentary rocks of the North American Plate steeply uplifted by Mendocino triple junction interactions with the Pacific Plate and Gorda Plate. The Lost Coast includes Tertiary marine sedimentary formations north of the Mattole River and a portion of the Franciscan Assemblage called Point Delgada at Shelter Cove.[3] The steepness of uplift has created a coastal ridge forming a drainage divide parallel to the coast. The drainage pattern between Usal Creek and the Mattole River is a series of short streams with steep channel gradients.[4]

Found correct link to Laura’s most excellent blog:
West of the Redwoods

And from her post Why “West of the Redwoods”?
https://mattolehistory.wordpress.com/2010/12/04/why-west-of-the-redwoods/

As you can see from the map below, copied from the National Geographic of October, 2009, in its article “The Tallest Trees: Redwoods,” we live in one of the few areas along the North American west coast’s Redwood Belt that does not support a natural Sequoia sempervirens population. As we all know, our microclimate makes this Valley a unique location for agriculture or vacationing relaxation away from the fogs of Humboldt Bay and the Eel River Valley. Locally, the gap in coastal fog is known as the Mattole Hole, and is quite sharply apparent when returning from town (points north) along the Wildcat on a summer’s day. We emerge from the fog around Cape Mendocino to see a blanket of clouds over the ocean opening in a big backwards “C” out from the mouth of the Mattole.

The lack of summer fog, which causes the Valley’s inhospitality to redwoods, is due to winds funneling down from warm inland areas. A drawback is that in late summertime, we often smell smoke from wildfires hundreds of miles inland.

Around 1989, i read in a Mattole Journal (a tiny, hard-to-find publication put out by Honeydew’s Bill Kelly, that only lasted for two years) that the geography of Cape Mendocino was responsible for this unusual phenomenon. Summer winds from the northwest blow down almost perpendicular to the coast north of the Cape, setting up a spiral effect below, which draws inland air out through a mountain gap in the Southern Humboldt area, and down through the Mattole Valley. An opposite wind pattern during most of the winter brings moist, tropical Pacific air up via “Pineapple Express” storms, giving us formidable rainfall totals when these systems hit the King Range wall.

On the map, you can see the gap the warm air flows through, and the special zone called Home by several hundred lucky or fated souls– west of the redwoods. (I added the yellow markings to show the lower Mattole Valley and river-mouth area. For this image, as for any on this site, “click it to big it.”)

comment image

This National Geographic map shows the Redwood Belt in dark green.

Now if memory serves I heard the story about the Lost Coast rising from the Ocean after the Redwood Forest was established, from an old Indian fellow Perry, who used to live in the mountains East of Petrolia. He said the story was part of local indigenous oral history.

The “Hidden” Redwoods of the Headwaters
While the vast majority of the Mattole watershed is dominated by Douglas-fir and hardwoods (Tan Oak/Madrone), there is a small, vital population of redwoods at the very southern headwaters of the river.
• The Sinkyone Overspill: In the extreme southern end of the watershed (near the Mattole River Ecological Reserve and Sanctuary Forest), the fog managed to “climb” over the ridges from the Sinkyone Wilderness.
• The Upper Mattole: There are  old-growth and second-growth redwood-fir forest in the Upper Mattole. These trees only survive there because the headwaters are high enough and positioned just right to catch the cooling “spillover” fog that the rest of the Mattole Hole misses.

I know all that. I don’t know what you are trying to prove. I live West of the Redwoods. That is a fact. Take Honeydew exit on 101; drive through Rockefeller Forest; the Redwoods end after Humboldt Redwoods State Park; I live beyond that; between Honeydew and Ettersburg. There are no Redwoods between where I live and the coast except those planted by settlers. The soil here is old ocean bed; slides still uncover places where there are sea salt deposits.

Here it is plums followed by Colts foot, then crocosmia, followed by lilies, then cow parsnips, etc. But I’m afraid that scotch broom is coming up the hill higher each year and nothing seems to outgrow it. Within 3 or 4 years, everything else will be gone. I have not gotten out of the car to see if the smaller things like violets or orchids can grow before the broom takes over. Sad.
