Semi Driver Arrested After CHP Says He Disobeyed a Lawful Order

A home surveillance system caught the stop and inspection of the big rig on the security system.
A commercial truck driver is facing arrest after California Highway Patrol officers say he continued driving a big rig that was missing an entire wheel assembly, hours after he had already been told to stop.
The situation began in the early morning hours today, April 9, when CHP Humboldt received a call around 1:06 a.m. about a semi that had driven partially up an embankment near Central Avenue and State Route 36 in Carlotta, near the Carlotta Post Office, with a tree involved in the incident. When officers arrived, they discovered the truck was missing a complete wheel assembly… but not due to the embankment encounter. After speaking with the driver, officers learned he had driven to the area from Washington state with the wheel assembly already missing.
Officers advised the driver not to operate the commercial vehicle again until the issue was fixed. That order, according to CHP Humboldt Sgt. Caleb Carsey, was not followed.
Around 10 a.m., Rio Dell residents notified Redheaded Blackbelt of what appeared to be an ongoing traffic stop and inspection. Sgt. Carsey told us that CHP officers pulled the vehicle over on Davis Street near Ireland Avenue in Rio Dell, where it remained stopped for some time as a CHP Northern Division commercial officer was called in to assist.
That commercial officer conducted a full vehicle inspection and determined the truck was unsafe and out of compliance; the wheel assembly still missing. The driver was placed under arrest for disobeying a lawful order.
The sheer size and weight of commercial trucks, many topping the scales around 80,000 pounds when fully loaded, make mechanical failures far more dangerous than those involving passenger vehicles. A missing wheel assembly on a big rig traveling public roads is not a minor oversight. At highway speeds, the consequences of that kind of mechanical failure can be catastrophic for anyone else sharing the road.
Sgt. Carsey thanked the Northern Division commercial officer for the assist and noted the importance of commercial vehicle operators keeping their equipment road-legal and compliant.
The driver’s name has not been released. It is unclear whether additional charges are pending.

Thanks CHP for making our highways and biways safe. You are appreciated!
CHP is the most professional police force in California
Being a relative (“most”) this is true. As an absolute, it is not.
I wholeheartedly agree…
From Washington, and the name not released. Hmm, methinks the driver is from a protected ethnicity…
Must be an illegal, there’s no other option I can comprehend (extreme sarcasm) methinks
Next time try mecriticalthinks…
Can we quit with making every damn incident into an immigration one? Is that too much to ask?
We will stop when the state stops issuing driver’s licenses and CDL class A licenses to illegal immigrants who disobey the lawful orders of the road because they don’t understand what the words on the signs mean because none of them can comprehend English.
Unfortunately, soon true
In this case I really don’t care where from. I really don’t. I’m not the one trying to make an argument about nothing. What I do care about is that they’re off the road. The rest is immaterial.
You should care if it is why they were on the road in violation of the police order in the first place while others were not. Would you care if the police withheld the information because it was the brother-in-law of the police chief? Reasons matter.
But we don’t know why he disobeyed the order. I suspect he just wanted to deliver his load, but we’re both speculating in the absence of facts.
I’m not speculating at all. I never said why I thought he violated the police order. You assumed and put those words in.
I just said supressing the identity of people arrested is an exercise in government authoritarianism and the public has a vested interest in knowing the identity of people being arrested to act as a check on both the police and the legal system.
The driver is most likely white like for real…keep dog whistling away lil
Worry about that later. Just get the truck off the road first.
I’m going to guess his rig was not equipped for Hwy 36, in more ways than one.
Seriously?
I’m FINE!!!
Hey Ronda,
Do you still believe in eugenics?
CHP has been nailing it lately. Good job protecting other vehicles on the roadway!
Obviously he was a wheel assembly short of a full load…!
Must be a racist.
I’m surprised the driver got this far South with the equipment issue. Knowing something about the load they’re carrying would be gratifying.
But what about all the rest of the wheels that it does have He argued.
ot was very common to run trucks like that in the army and even on roads stateside however loaded weight needs to be adjusted. This seems to be more of a case of respect my authority !! Than anything else , and due to the drivers refusal one cop covers for the other cop. The driver must know how to drive if he made it here from washington state all those passes as well as scale houses. That would suggest that the load was also properly adjusted
The driver must know how to drive…

What is wrong with you, lack of oxygen??
This is the sort of useless insult that Kym’s rules should address with not even the smallest hint of any information to excuse it.
“The driver must know how to drive”
No, the headline said he was only a semi driver.
Haha, I see what you did there, nice play on words.
Or he was empty
