Eureka Man Arrested on Child Sex Charges Previously Wrote of 2024 Investigation Into Abuse Allegations He Denied

A Eureka man currently in custody on multiple felony charges involving alleged sexual offenses against minors previously wrote publicly about being investigated because of allegations involving a former foster child, according to social media posts reviewed by Redheaded Blackbelt.
Tristan Mitchell, 42, was arrested April 3, 2026, and is being held on a Ramey warrant, which allows law enforcement to arrest a suspect based on probable cause before formal charges are filed.
According to booking information from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, Mitchell faces three counts of lewd acts with a child under 14 (Penal Code 288(a)), two counts of oral copulation with a minor (Penal Code 287(c)(1)), and two counts of sexual penetration with a foreign object (Penal Code 289(a)(1)(A)).
Authorities have not released details about the current allegations, including when or where the alleged offenses are believed to have occurred or whether the case is connected to any prior investigations.
However, in a September 2024 social media post, Mitchell described what he characterized as a months-long child abuse investigation involving “one of my adult former foster children.”
In the posts, Mitchell wrote that early one morning in March of 2024, the now adult former foster child “started an arson fire and burned down a mobile home that I owned.” While that account has not been independently verified, a Humboldt Bay Fire press release describes a residential fire on Surfside Drive in the Humboldt Hill area of Eureka on March 18, 2024, at approximately 3:20 a.m., resulting in an estimated $175,000 in damage. Law enforcement has not confirmed whether that incident is the same as the fire referenced in Mitchell’s posts.
Mitchell wrote that the former foster child’s “older sister and brother then accused me of a multitude of abuses and crimes against him in an attempt to mitigate his personal responsibilities for his actions.”
These allegations, he said, led to a months-long investigation involving law enforcement and child welfare authorities. He said the situation deeply affected his family. He stated, “The worst part of this whole ordeal is that I was in the process of adopting my [teenage] son.
Mitchell further wrote, “As for my former foster child, with my blessing the DA offered him a plea deal that will require him to be on probation and to comply with mental health treatment during that time.” Redheaded Blackbelt has not confirmed the details of that account with law enforcement or prosecutors.
Redheaded Blackbelt has reached out to the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office seeking clarification about any prior investigations or confirmation on Mitchell’s statements that he had foster children and was a social worker. As of publication, no responses have been received.

Yes- all should be given the benefit of the doubt until proven guilty in court. I can’t imagine how it would feel to be accused of such a heinous crime while being innocent…Let’s hope the courts handle this situation with honesty and integrity.

Too many heinous crimes 1. go unreported (shame/secrecy) 2. if reported, are uninvestigated/uncharged and 3.If charged are pled out to lesser charge or not “convicted” in court of law.
And let’s be real. In spite of evidence or damning testimony 99% of criminals alway swear innocence!! .…(which unfortunately, places undo onus on the accuser,who by default -while the perpetrator lives under the protective veil of presumed innocence- is automatically assumed to be lying!

As for getting away with heinous crimes yes odds are stacked against victims including those falsely accused (far more rare than never accused or accused and not proven/prosecuted).
As a society we do not readily admit to vulnerability and we call emotionally upset people toxic and demand the sort of “positivity” pushed at us by capitalism. What sells hyper consumption are: loneliness cultivated in part by extremes of either fear or expectations of ecstatic joy (like the faces of people on posters at the bank who apparently are orgasmic over opening an account or the families enjoying a “Happy meal” to make up for all the lack of real connection and the time to creat it).
Meanwhile we ignore the ordinary and most basic needs in life like housing and community and civic duty.
Millions of dollars and Ivy League educated hard working perople are and have for decades been invested in research for psychology, HOWEVER it almost all goes towards marketing to sell things and politics to manipulate people instead of towards what makes for healthy, happy individuals overall such as are in the Blue Zones, and also the countries that rank highest in happiness.
As a Country of runaways, highly mobile we’ve tried to replace the empty spots in our soul (left by lack of stable community) with material possessions and distractions, and it’s not working. Americans vicariously live through rich celebrities much like the British have their royalty; the apple did not fall far from the tree. But there is no moat wide enough, no wall high enough to keep the billionaires safe from the multitudes who are suffering, the failing social and physical ecosystems the shared myth says we do not need.
Most everyone could stand to use fewer things, spend more time in community and politics and make it an integralpart of life which would help us understand why people do heinous things and how to prevent it and heal the sufferers who mostly get not only ignored (young “Therapists” with virtual degrees and quick fixes and silly name changes like mental health being called now “Behavioral health” as if only the outcome matters not the process for which insurance companies and American culture hasn’t the values, time or patients for )
We need to make sure the CA bill to tax the wealthiest passes even though Newscum does not want it to and has been invested in by the very people who will be taxed.

Well…I think that child molesters should be executed. So before that happens I definitely want to make sure they are definitely guilty. It’s a shame but I agree the odds are stacked against the victims in a he said-she said situation where there is no other proof. But what’s the other option -Destroy somebody on an accusation?
As someone who lived in the foster system then also worked in it all I can say is this is complicated stuff that we as a community, culture, species have not invested enough in. I don;t know anyone involved in this particular case.
I do know PTSD clinical trials barely exist in the US (none for cPTSD)and are focused only on veterans while forgetting entirely the children who are born into a war without flags, uniforms, etc. ; a confusing confounding personalized war with mostly disinterest from community in general that is more concerned with entitlement to consumption and with lots of recreation for adults who feel zero responsibility for children in need. The people who with sincerity take in foster children also adopt not only thetrauma but also the lack of support. Also, predators and opportunists know very well that the lack of community support leaves a vast group of children helpless to their manipulations, children and the adults they become who make “Choices” from very different experiential menus than those who were loved well enough.
We rage at politicians and billionaires while most elderly and adults even young people without children I see are not participating not reaching out to help children, elders or others who are vulnerable. Churches used to more so but help should not be secular.
The conservatives say Fk the vulnerable and the Liberals lament that while spending their time doing all sorts of hobbies, “Art”, going to social events, reading 4 mystery novels a month , sitting infront of big screen tvs or immersed in marathons, or their next tattoo and directly helping no one. Meanwhile the helpers burn out and help itself it deemed they by and therefore useless and the victims blamed for “Not wanting help.” Someone hemoraging on the side of the road from a car accident will have someone stop and try to help no matter how helpless they feel and ultimately they will be rescued by EMTs etc, vast teams of people whereas someone suffering psychological wounds is given a three digit suicide hotline or warm line to call and talk with a total stranger for 10-30 min a day; sure it helps some but is so passive and impersonal and helps solve zero real life problems that people need help with . Social media has NOT cause a loneliness epidemic; mobility, lack of humility about our shared vulnerability and interdependency and our abandonment of civic and community duty has.

In the1800s dead infants’ bodies stacked up on the back steps of orphanages at a rate coroners could not keep up with daily. So we are maybe doing better but the foster system (Clinton as governor voted not not raise funding for foster system in his state) is underfunded, understaffed and struggling families often not helped enough (mine was beyond help offered and even forced on them at the time 40 plus years ago and the foster sytem horrid as it was saved my life, not the quality of it though).
We need to make sure the CA bill to tax the wealthiest passes even though Newscum does not want it to and has been invested in by the very people who will be taxed. Mental health including suicide must be decriminalized and separated from law enforcement…the MIST team? LOL? Thin and elusive as mist so a fitting name. Not their fault AND there are not enough people hired and well trained to help mental/emotinally ailing folk.
It’s good to read comments here that are not the same ‘hang ’em high!!!’ ones that accompanied the first article about this arrest / situation. It seems people can be reasonable to think twice, to understand where there seems to be reasonable doubt. (That is the job of a jury. While usually these allegations cause people to act/ express themselves more like a lynch mob).
That Tristan confronted these allegations head on before lends some credibility to his story. And….. Who knows. Let’s just hope he gets a fair trial and then, if he is found innocent, that people will not harbor doubt and hatred. That said, his life is forever stained by this. Fore he will be and is being punished now (and apparently has been for the last couple years), in view of society, no matter what. (If he’s found guilty, then yes, the different forms of punishment will be well earned).
It’s a risk that some would-be foster parents won’t take. They see where an upset child can concoct a story, regardless of truth and use it as leverage anytime an adult tries to impose some house rules and regulations, or God forbid, any sort of consequence for bad behavior. All it takes is an accusation that goes public and the child gets a tase of blood, if you will and weaponizes the whole CPS system against foster parents. What the matter is with this person is up to the courts to decide, but apparently enough of something to warrant an arrest. However, even if fully exonerated, the damage is done, and “victims” have flipped the script and became the bullies themselves, via the legal system, thus a lot of folks I know that would make great foster parents (and some are) you couldn’t pay them enough to take on that risk.
I disagree with you. IMO, the fact that he beat these allegations before, just means that the odds are stacked against the vulnerable (the foster kid). How many times have you seeing, on the news, the guilty pretending to be innocent, crying & pleading for “help find my love one”, just to be found to be the perpetrator?
This sickens me. Who knows what these children have been through. I don’t think kids/victims are believed when they accuse the perpetrators of heinous crimes. Most are too ashamed, fearful or traumatized to report it to anyone. I do know that there are a lot of rapists and pedophiles out there attacking people and the most vulnerable. The should face the death penalty, if it existed. The laws need to change!
