Eureka Man Arrested on Multiple Felony Child Sex Charges, As Yet Unverified Claims Emerge About His Work With Children

A Eureka man is in custody following his arrest on multiple felony charges involving alleged sexual offenses against minors, according to booking information from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.
Tristan Mitchell, 42, was arrested at approximately 1:10 p.m. on April 3, by Deputy McKenzie. He is being held on a Ramey warrant, which is a warrant issued by a judge before formal charges are filed, allowing law enforcement to arrest a suspect based on probable cause while prosecutors prepare the case.
According to the booking record, Mitchell faces three counts of lewd acts with a child under 14 (Penal Code 288(a)), two counts of oral copulation with a minor (Penal Code 287(c)(1)), and two counts of sexual penetration with a foreign object (Penal Code 289(a)(1)(A)).
No additional details about the allegations, including when or where the alleged offenses are believed to have occurred or how the investigation began have been released.
Since the arrest, Redheaded Blackbelt has received tips alleging Mitchell may have served in caregiving or professional capacities, including as a social worker and/or foster parent. Those claims have not been independently confirmed by officials. We did reach out to DHHS for information on whether he was involved in foster care and to HCSO but it was late on a Saturday and it may be several days before we get a response.
Publicly available records show that a person with the same name previously studied social work at Cal Poly Humboldt and authored a 2014 graduate project focused on improving communication between Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and community professionals working with children. A letter to the editor published in 2013 under the same name also discussed foster care challenges in Humboldt County.
In an email sent to Redheaded Blackbelt in 2020, Mitchell identified himself in his signature as a “Supervising Social Worker” with Adoption Horizons. Redheaded Blackbelt has not yet independently confirmed this title. However, we do know that Adoption Horizons (which closed in 2023) spoke of him on their page.
One reader who contacted Redheaded Blackbelt said a young person they knew had been in Mitchell’s care last year but declined to be interviewed further. That account has not been independently verified.
All suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

CASA did nothing to help my step-children when their mother was abusing them. They deserve nothing.
Everyone has anecdotal experiences they can convey. If even one child gets an advocate then it makes it worthwhile.

Are you saying that all three social services workers were associated with CASA? You should not implicate an organization or even mention CASA if it is not based in reality.
I understand your concern, and I’m actually supportive of CASA. I know of any number of people that have either used their services or worked for them in the past. But I didn’t say them in particular. I just said third, without any reference or implying it was anything to do with CASA, just social (or human) services in general. One last year was the kiddie porn distribution arrest of a local behaviorist that worked for a similar organization.

These cases are not based in reality, they are reality.

The perpetrator had been arrested for attempting to kill his sister, was found incapable of standing trial because of mental illness, declared unfit to stand trial at any point innthe future and order commitment to a mental hospital, was subsequently found improved by the hospital staff and released within a couple of years. Of course he attempted to murder a complete strange three years later and is- wait for it- going to have another evaluation to see if he’s competent this time. Now thats ĥow liberal handle crimes.

Child molesters are often people who were themselves molested as children. Doesn’t excuse it but it is a mental disease that spreads in this way. I give props to those who were molested as children and made a point of never doing that to anybody else, maybe even sought mental treatment or lived with their issues never hurting other innocent children. Those who chose to act out on others what was done to them….deserve no sympathy at all. If we cannot correct them they should be eliminated from our society and our community. Harsh words but it’s a harsher thing to allow them access to innocent children…This sick disease spreads because we allow it.
I’d suggest that society offer free anonymous counseling to teenagers and people into their mid-20s, to speak CONFIDENTIALLY about their sexual interests. If and when someone expresses an interest in children, they would be educated about the harm to children and offered treatment. This could remain CONFIDENTIAL unless they are accused, arrested and prosecuted for such a crime. That vulnerability, plus the opportunity to get help to restrain themselves, would give a potential perpetrator incentive to change and/or to not act out. Call it incentive based prevention.
