At little before 5:30 this evening, officers with the Eureka Police Department responded to Halvorsen Park, where a man was found deceased near the waterfront.

When our reporter, Ryan Hutson, arrived on scene, officers had roped off an area near a dock with yellow police tape. At least four Eureka Police Department units and one CSET member were present, along with a vehicle from the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office.

A bicycle was visible near the dock, close to where the man’s body was located. Authorities were working within the taped-off area as part of their investigation.

An officer at the scene told a bystander that police were familiar with the deceased, though no official identification has been released.

According to Eureka Police, no foul play is suspected. The incident was reportedly called in by a passerby on the nearby trail. Officials said the death may be related to an overdose, but at this point it is being treated as a death investigation. The trail through this area is currently closed, but EPD expects it to be reopened soon.

Out of respect, our coverage does not include images of the body.

Everyone can decide for themselves whether or not they want to carry Narcan and whethet or not they want to potentially be involved in using it.

Of course Landell, anyone can choose not to, but why would they? There are No known cases of harm to someone who administered naloxone to someone. And the life you save could be your own grandchild. We never know who might use a substance not knowing it has a fatal dose of fentanyl in it.

Also, the person you save may become an EMT someday and save your grandchild.

Some prefer mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Not as effective.

Bill, I totally agree with you. If the passerby had Narcan it might have saved that man if he was not already deceased.

Also strips to test your drugs for fentanyl. So scary that some people use fentanyl on purpose, but yep, narcan is great. But a person using alone is still in huge danger of OD.

Just because he was a transient, he did not need to die like that. If he passed due to a drug overdose it is just sad. People lose sight of the fact that he was someone’s child, father, etc. I pray that he can now finally RIP. My most sincere condolences to his family and friends. Thank you to the passerby that called the police to report what they found. You are a very kind and understanding person.

His bicycle was probably stolen. Another druggie off the dole. The beat goes on for the homeles industry.

Obviously not a stolen bicycle: the brakes are still connected/working, the seat is at the correct height, and the bike rack does not have detritus tied/stacked on it.
Rest in peace.

Drove near there today, Sunday, about 1:00 PM, and saw a couple of 16ft or so aluminum boats with guys monitoring equipment. Couldn’t tell what was happening.

So sorry for the loss and friends family community affected .
No matter the freelance reporting title, death is not transient.
Not trying to be funny . have mixed feelings about putting housing status in the title though the amount that homeless suffer should be more publicized. We don’t title deaths of house people articles, housed person found dead. Maybe initially doesn’t need to be mentioned to the topic in general should be?

I like that. Images of the body, even covered up by a tarp or trapped in a smashed vehicle is completely unnecessary to any news coverage. Nice to not see that on here!

RIP to the person who passed. Condolences to his loved ones and the officers that knew him and saw his final chapter end that way.
