CDPH Warns of Serious Illness Linked to Raw Cheddar Cheese Produced by RAW FARM, LLC
This is a press release from the California Department of Public Health:
CDPH is working with local health departments, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and federal partners to investigate an outbreak linked to the consumption of RAW FARM brand raw cheddar cheese.
As of March 13, 2026, seven individuals from three states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) O157, including five California residents. Four illnesses are in children under the age of five. Two individuals have been hospitalized, including one from California. No deaths or cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a severe complication of STEC infection that can cause organ failure and even death, have been reported.
Interviews with people who became ill indicate that RAW FARM brand raw cheddar cheese is the likely source of recent infections. A voluntary recall of RAW FARM brand raw cheddar cheese has been recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, as of March 18, 2026, RAW FARM has not voluntarily removed the cheese from the market.
What You Can Do
The best way to prevent getting sick from germs such as STEC 0157 in raw dairy products (including cheeses) is to choose dairy products made with pasteurized milk.
- Consumers should not eat RAW FARM brand block or shredded raw cheddar cheese while the investigation is ongoing.
- Businesses should not sell or serve RAW FARM brand block or shredded raw cheddar cheese while the investigation is ongoing.
- Consumers and businesses should wash and sanitize items and surfaces that may have come into contact with this cheese.
- Consumers should call their health care provider if they become sick with symptoms of STEC infection, especially after eating RAW Farm brand raw cheddar cheese.
Symptoms of STEC infection may include diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting and abdominal cramps. Symptoms usually start three to four days after a person is infected. Most people get better on their own within a week, but some people may develop severe diseases that require hospital care. Young children are at highest risk of getting HUS. Contact a medical provider if you suspect you or someone you know may have been infected.
For updated information on this STEC O157 outbreak, see the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Food Safety Alert (E. Coli Outbreak Linked to Raw Cheddar Cheese | E. coli infection | CDC ) and FDA Public Health Advisory (Outbreak Investigation of E. coli O157:H7: Raw Cheddar Cheese (March 2026) | FDA).

Well that’s a “raw” deal.
Can leave you feeling quite bleu.
“… seven individuals from three states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) O157, including five California residents.”
Someone needs to go retake 3rd grade math.
If 3 states have an individual infected that would leave 4 remaining, yet CA has 5 individuals infected. 🤷♂️
*
One of three was in California, one each in two other states, and the four remaining were in California too?
Five from California and one each from two other states. That looks like seven to me.
That’s their story and they’re sticking to it! California is included in the three state count… And in the total case count.. Maybe it was mentioned alone because that was a California health department press release?
Looks like there is one each in Texas and Florida , and the five in California.
It’s not even math. It’s understanding the word problem.
-Seven individuals from three states
-including five California residents.
-Four illnesses are in children under the age of five.
-Two individuals have been hospitalized, including one from California.
5 of the seven are from CA, the other two (if from 3 states total) mean one each in those other two states. Four are under age 5. It does not say which state, or all three. Two of them hospitalized, one was from CA, one was not.
you have two coins totaling 25 cents, and one of them is not a dime. What are they?
When does 9 + 5 = 2?
That makes sense. Never was a fan of word problems. 🤦♂️
As for your riddles:
The other coin is a dime (but you asked the question incorrectly since no 2 coins total $0.25, maybe you meant 30 cents and one coin is not a nickel).
When it’s 9 o’clock and you add 5 hrs to it you get 2 o’clock.
3 states, 5 residents of California, one resident in each of the other two states.
Maybe it’s you who needs to retake third grade math 😂
Pasteurization was fully understood and patented in France in 1865. If you are consuming unpasteurized dairy in 2026 you fully deserve all the suffering microbiology can unleash upon you.
I’d amend to say “unpasteurized commercial dairy”. Some businesses do not scale well. Like commercial organic farms. Like commercial weed farms. Some businesses do not scale well.
Another good reason to avoid unpasteurized milk is brucellosis, or undulant fever. Read about that disease and its symptoms for a good scare.
My mother had undulant fever. I was a young child in the 1940’s but I remember her being sick off and on for several years. My dad told us what it was. It always started with a fever and chills then joint pain that put her in bed for a week or more. I just remember how worried my brother and I were during her down times. When we moved to Idaho in the early 50’s she finally recovered. I cannot imagine why anyone would think drinking
unpasteurized milk is a good thing.
TG for warning. The producer is uncooperative.
