Guatemayan Yum Yums Cleared to Reopen After Health Department Suspension

DHHS DEH logo insetA Eureka eatery has been given the green light to resume operations following a temporary permit suspension stemming from a major health code violation.

Guatemayan Yum Yums, located at 534 5th Street, was cleared by the Humboldt County Division of Environmental Health on February 26, 2026, after a reinspection confirmed the facility had addressed the violations that led to its closure. The restaurant’s permit had been suspended due to a violation involving a cockroach infestation.

During the reinspection, Environmental Health specialists observed significant improvements throughout the facility. The restaurant provided documentation of weekly pest control services. Inspectors noted that debris had been removed from shelving in the food preparation area, grease had been cleaned from fryer baskets, counters and equipment were found clean and free of food debris, and sanitizer solution was measured at 200 parts per million chlorine — within acceptable range. All food was observed stored in containers with tight-fitting lids, and unnecessary equipment and utensils had been removed from the back storeroom.

“The necessary corrections have been made and this facility is now approved to re-open,” the inspection report states. “The permit is now reinstated.”

However, the restaurant is not entirely in the clear. A follow-up routine inspection is expected within approximately 30 days, and officials have outlined four additional corrective actions that must be completed to avoid a billable reinspection fee of $180. These include repairing damaged wall surfaces and peeling paint, repairing or replacing damaged floor coverings, servicing the mechanical dishwasher to prevent water splash and maintain proper sanitizer levels, and defrosting chest freezers to allow proper closure and prevent water pooling on the floor.

The Humboldt County Division of Environmental Health can be reached at (707) 445-6215.

I’ve pleaded with the health dept to make the restaurant reports easily accessible via their website. No such luck, you need to be a computer wiz to get to them. The lady on the phone was very nice and helpful telling me the 10 different things you need to do to find the reports. I would think that they could put a freaking button to click on and get the current reports. It makes my meal much more enjoyable when I see the chosen restaurant has a clean bill of health.

95% are not so clean. That is why you cant see an easy report. If this got put out there they would have to clean up their act. Be sure to give them that 15% service fee. And FFS a 20% tip……..yeah…NO!

Is there anything on a Humboldt County website that isn’t a chore to access? It may not be malfeasance. It may be sheer incompetence.

Incompetence and indifference.

Not really. It’s always been an unmitigated mess. And often pages are changed or removed with a “404 not found” error in it’s place. Some pages stay like that for months at a time. The search function on it is also rather useless.

I was living in North Hollywood in 1984 to attend school. I played city rec league basketball. We had an Iranian, an Israeli, and some New York Jews.

We would play, and then get together to watch game film and drink beer. The lights were turned down due to using a projector sceen and it was dark in the room. Dark enough that I didn’t notice anything suspicious about the snikers bar I opened and began eating.

Right away there was a bitter taste and something wasn’t right. Went into the kitchen and discovered there were baby cockroaches moving rapidly in the bar. I didn’t swallow any but that memory still creeps me out.

You were hanging out with a group of jews in L.A. and found a cockroach in your Snickers? What a weird story. (hint: a large percentage of Iranians in that part of L.A. are jews who used to help run Iran for the U.S. and Israel and fled with money when the Shah fled with a lot of money). I still don’t understand how a dirty movie theater snack bar has any relevance to this story (Allah Snack Bar derogatory joke maybe?). Anyway, thank you for your service. I doubt that cockroaches ate their way through a plastic wrapper and regardless you should have noticed the wrapper had a hole or something in it when you bought it. Was this one of those seedy theaters showing the NC-17 films? Besides the snickers, how were the hand jobs when the lights went down? I’m thirsty for details. Was Pee Wee in the row behind you guys? So many questions….

Cockroaches add protein to the meal. Bon apetit.

Now the customers can enjoy their food slathered in a lot of pesticide residue, industrial de-greaser residue, sanitizer and cleaning chemicals that were used to coat all kitchen surfaces instead of just the usual seasoning of cockroach frass that gets added in the handling process. Nobody is hitting the place up for vegetarian food so rest assured the meat is still the same original quality as before, just the way you remember it, since the health department is not there to verify what it is or it’s source and won’t be sticking around long enough to watch how it’s handled. A lot of people (especially in certain countries like this one and many others) will eat any kind of garbage as long as they don’t have to think about it or see how it was produced. We could probably get people to eat food that is 5% ground up plastic and people would smile and leave a nice tip as long as it’s greasy. Might as well just make the grease from petroleum.

omg… how disgusting. It really takes a big level of incompetence or a big level of “idgaf” to have such a dirty kitchen. Either way community should stay away from this place.
