[Update: Open] Video: Slide Partially Blocks Highway 299, Traffic Slowed Approximately West of Willow Creek

Traffic slowed along Highway 299 east in Humboldt County this morning after a slide sent mud, dirt and rock across the roadway approximately five miles west of Willow Creek.

The incident was logged on Caltrans QuickMap at approximately 8:23 a.m. near mile marker 31.80. Initial details indicated crews were “trying to get both lanes open.”

A Redheaded Blackbelt reader who was driving in the area said the slide came down without warning directly in front of them, forcing them to stop. The reader said Caltrans crews arrived within minutes and used a blade truck to clear the westbound lane so traffic could move through under controlled conditions.

Video provided to Redheaded Blackbelt shows debris spilling onto the highway before crews began clearing operations.

As of the latest update, traffic in the area was moving under controlled conditions while Caltrans worked to fully reopen both lanes. Motorists should expect possible delays and use caution through the stretch as cleanup continues.

Note to the page operators, could a link to the CHP incident or Quick Maps be stickied in these posts? Perhaps a permalink to app downloads for readers that might want to get updates through their phones?

Caltrans QuickMap
https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/
Click the QuickMap Options drop down, then the Road Conditions dropdown. Check as many or as few boxes that you want. Click again on the dropdown arrow to close the dropdown and see the map. Move the map. Zoom. Click an incident icon for your location.

CHP incidents ate one of the box check options.

Considering the year round road hazards we have up here, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to post/save this link to the desktop or homescreen.

Safe journies.
