An Arcata Subway that was temporarily closed this week following a sewage backup has been cleared to reopen after correcting violations identified by Humboldt County’s Division of Environmental Health.

The Subway located at 686 F Street was inspected February 18. According to the original inspection report, sewage was backing up into floor sinks and drains throughout the facility, creating what inspectors described as a condition requiring immediate closure.

A follow-up inspection conducted today, February 19, documents that the plumbing issue was repaired and the facility was cleaned and sanitized. The handwritten notes on page 2 of the reinstatement report state the “plumbing issue has been repaired” and that floor sinks and drains were cleared, with floors cleaned and sanitized.

Inspectors also noted corrective actions beyond the sewage repair. The report states that walk-in cooler condensation was dripping onto food containers and storage racks and that the leak was repaired to protect food, equipment, and utensils from contamination. Cookie tongs previously stored on a solid surface were relocated to a clean, sanitary storage location. Additionally, soda machine waste lines were rerouted to provide a compliant air gap above the floor sink.

The report concludes, “Permit to operate is reinstated, facility may reopen for business”.

Under California Retail Food Code, sewage backups are considered an imminent health hazard because they can contaminate food and food-contact surfaces. Facilities must close until the issue is corrected and verified by Environmental Health inspectors.

With the violations addressed and the permit reinstated, the Arcata Subway has resumed operations.

Without hesitation, Subway management should have resolved the sewage problem without having the health department shut them down.
Let’s hope more frequent inspections will keep them operating within health department and public safety regulations. Keep up the good work health inspectors!

Apopa, I agree with your comment, but I will never ear there again! Makes me wonder how long they had the sewer problem.
