A frequently flooded stretch of Highway 36 was fully closed Wednesday morning as heavy rain overnight continued to impact the North Coast, where a series of storms has brought rising rivers, saturated ground, and hazardous travel conditions.

According to the California Highway Patrol traffic incident log, both eastbound and westbound Highway 36 are closed between the Carlotta Volunteer Fire Department and Cummings Creek Road due to flooding. The closure affects mile markers 7.4 to 8.1. There was no estimated time for reopening as of the latest report.

CHP records show the closure was reported shortly before 7:40 a.m., with notifications made to local emergency personnel. The area is known to flood during periods of heavy rain.

The closure comes as the North Coast continues to be hit by multiple storm systems, with additional rain forecast. Officials warned that conditions can change rapidly during flooding events, especially in low-lying areas and along rivers and creeks.

Authorities are urging drivers to avoid flooded roads entirely. Even shallow water can hide damage to the roadway, washouts, or strong currents capable of sweeping vehicles off the road. Motorists are reminded of the long-standing safety guidance: Turn around, don’t drown. Driving through floodwaters can be deadly and puts both motorists and first responders at risk.

Travelers are encouraged to monitor road conditions closely, plan alternate routes, and delay travel if possible until conditions improve.

UPDATE 12 p.m.: GOOD NEWS! State Route 36 is now open according to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page.

The water comes up, the water goes down. It’ll probably come up and go down several times in the next couple of days.

Yesterday afternoon heading east there was more slide action. That is my real concern today. I guess its down to garberville and over alderpoint road.

Merry Christmas everybody! Stay safe and enjoy your family and friends.
