Press release from CAL FIRE Mendocino Unit:

cal fire jackson demonstration state forest news release logoThe California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Mendocino Unit is pleased to announce the sale of firewood permits on Jackson Demonstration State Forest (JDSF) beginning Monday, August 25, 2025 at 1:00 pm. Firewood permits will be limited to two cords per household at a cost of $20.00/permit, sold at the CAL FIRE Fort Bragg office, located at 802 North Main Street, Fort Bragg, CA (707) 964-5674. The firewood area will open to permit holders at 2:00 pm on Monday, August 25th and is tentatively scheduled to close on October 1st, 2025, or when wood supply is gone, a significant rain event happens, or other constraints force closure, whichever occurs first. To ensure sufficient wood supply, only 100 permits will be sold.

Due to the presence of Sudden Oak Death, permit sales are limited to Mendocino County residents because the wood cannot be transported out of the county. Permit holders are reminded that fire safety rules require chainsaws to be equipped with an approved spark arrester, and a long-handled shovel or fire extinguisher must be within 25 feet of the operating chainsaw.

Multiple uses that benefit the public, the economy and natural resources are what our demonstration forests are all about.
