Cloverdale Burglary Suspects Caught After High-Speed Pursuit Near Ukiah; CHP Officer Crashes with Semi During Chase
Two suspects accused of stealing hundreds of dollars in merchandise from multiple pharmacies across Northern California were arrested Friday after a high-speed pursuit up and down Highway 101—an operation that ended with spike strips, a shut-down freeway, and a California Highway Patrol officer collision with a semi-truck.
The incident began around 12:30 p.m. on August 1, when Cloverdale Police responded to a report of a burglary in progress at the CVS Pharmacy on South Cloverdale Boulevard. A male suspect entered the store, grabbed approximately $400 in skincare products, and fled in a waiting white Mazda sedan driven by a female accomplice and also containing a small dog. The getaway was swift—lasting only about 30 seconds—and the vehicle’s rear license plate had been intentionally obscured.
Thanks to Cloverdale’s FLOCK license plate recognition cameras, officers quickly identified the suspect vehicle and issued a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) alert to nearby agencies. Within 15 minutes, the same vehicle was spotted on FLOCK cameras in Hopland. Soon after, the suspects struck again, this time hitting a Walgreens in Ukiah. As they continued north, cameras captured the vehicle in Willits. Willits Police and CHP began pursuing the suspects.
CHP soon advised on the scanner that the vehicle had reversed direction and was heading south on Highway 101. Officers deployed spike strips several times, eventually disabling the car and arresting both suspects in a felony stop. The southbound lanes of Highway 101 near Lake Mendocino Drive were temporarily closed as officers secured the scene. An animal control officer was requested to deal with the suspects’ dog.
The suspects Birdean Gaines, female, and Dejon Wilkes, male, were arrested and charged as follows.
However, the aggressive pursuit came with risks. During the chase, one CHP officer collided with a semi-truck near Reeves Canyon Road. The crash, which may have also involved a large pickup, resulted in minor injuries, according to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page. Travel on northbound 101 was impacted for some time.
Further investigation revealed that the suspects are believed to be involved in a broader, multi-jurisdictional theft operation stretching from Sonoma County into the Bay Area. The male suspect also had an outstanding felony warrant related to prior theft offenses.
In a statement, Cloverdale Police praised the interagency coordination and credited the FLOCK camera system for helping to track and apprehend the suspects swiftly.

California’s laws and the prosecution choices of elected officials lead directly to this type of crime.
It’s more the lack of mandatory rehabilitative measures that lead to this type of crime.
45.6% of people who merely serve time in jail or prison reoffend within three years.
Those numbers drop to 26.1% for people who earned Educational Merit Credit while incarcerated and 21.1% for people who earned Rehabilitative Achievement Credit. https://www.cdcr.ca.gov/news/2024/02/13/cdcr-recidivism-report-finds-recidivism-rates-drop-2/
We also need to make sobriety, employment, and housing mandatory for people who are released, with frequent checks and supportive services. Anyone who fails at these requirements should be reincarcerated until they’re able to comply.
You can’t fix dysfunctional.
Bullshit.
Those numbers are skewered and twisted. Real numbers are around 90% or more go one with their crime lifestyle but get probation, don’t get caught or get caught are sit in jail dragging out the trial until they are over the 3-year window. The recidivism rate are twisted. For instance, if a guy gets out for drug sales but commits murder not the same crime and does not count. If he gets out and is shot and killed by the cops the next day committing an armed robbery it does not go against the recidivism and looks like a win in the stats. The devil is in the details.
As for mandatory employment housing etc great idea just not based in reality.
I know this person personally. No rehabilitative measures would have helped him. He chose that life. He threw away his family and his business for that life. Don’t feel sorry for him. That’s apart of the problem. He needs to stay in prison longer than the last time. They let him out early on AB-109. And what he do? He spit in their faces. I hope the judge throws the book at him. He deserves it.
Or maybe poor parenting and a decaying social contract? Don’t think you can elect your way out our problems.
I agree. Lousy parenting, I believe, far too often leads to lousy offspring.
Yes, sometimes, good parenting isn’t enough to have caring, responsible kids.
Personal experience?
He came from a good home. He had a great mother. Don’t blame her. It’s him. He’s a demon spawn. She nearly gave her life to raise him right. Unfortunately, she was murdered in 2009.He’s been in the paper several times sadly.
Happens in Iowa too. Thinking of a move?
Well at least they should have nice soft skin
So many felonies. Maybe 10 strike law?
Definitely. I wonder what he did with the gun. The police didn’t find it. He stay strapped
What kind of a low ass, water based, room temperature IQ do you have to have to rip off multiple major retailers in a row and continue on roads that are absolutely covered in police cameras in 2025?
Sheeeeeeit.
He’s been doing it for years. The police definitely need to follow the trail.
Total all costs including first responders and they stay in custody until the total bill is paid.
