Caltrans announced that slide debris removal and hillside stabilization has allowed the DOT to reopen the Avenue to one-way controlled traffic at this time. [All photos from the Caltrans District 1 Facebook page]

After months of closure, a portion of Route 254, known as the Avenue of the Giants, has reopened to one-way controlled traffic near Weott. The affected stretch, from postmile 18.44 to 18.57, had been closed due to an active slide that had been supporting a larger unstable slope.

Caltrans District 1 announced that while the road is now open, traffic through the area is being managed with one-way control. Drivers are asked to come to a complete stop when approaching the slide zone and proceed only when the roadway is clear.

The reopening follows a long period of disruption during which Caltrans and California State Parks directed travelers to use U.S. Highway 101 as a detour. That route remains a viable alternative, with access to the Avenue of the Giants north of the slide via Exit 663 (South Fork/Honeydew) and south via Exit 661 (Weott).

Long-term stabilization efforts will continue this summer.

The slide has forced the Avenue of the Giants to be closed for an extended period of time.

Motorists are urged to use caution when driving through the area and to report any roadway debris to the California Highway Patrol.

Looks like another “little” Grizzly Creek slide. They have it well marked and even ask you to stop and don’t go until it is safe. The cleanup of that slide when it finally stops hopefully won’t take too long. Even big trucks and motor homes can easily get by.
