Humboldt County Offers Low-Interest Loans to Help Qualifying Homeowners Repair Homes or Build ADUs

Press release from the County of Humboldt:Humboldt County Seal 2017 feature

The County of Humboldt’s Planning & Building Department is excited to announce the availability of low interest loans for eligible homeowners through its Owner-Occupied Rehabilitation and Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Loan Programs.

These programs are designed to help unincorporated Humboldt County residents with low income invest in their homes, improve living conditions and create new rental opportunities, all with no required loan payments for 30 years.

Whether homeowners are seeking to make essential repairs, improve safety and accessibility, or construct an accessory dwelling unit such as a backyard cottage or converted garage to generate additional income, these programs can help make those goals achievable.

Funds may be used for a wide range of improvements, including roof and heating system repairs or the construction of a long-term rental unit on the property.

The Owner-Occupied Rehabilitation and ADU Loan Programs are available to qualifying homeowners with low-income who live in their own homes in unincorporated areas of Humboldt County.

Funding is limited, and demand is expected to be high. Interested homeowners are encouraged to contact the Humboldt County Planning & Building Department to be placed on the waiting list for these programs as soon as possible.

Please visit the county’s Housing and Grants web page for more information or call 707-267-9402 to find out if you qualify and begin the application process. For assistance in Spanish, please call 707-268-3725.

A government that cannot maintain basic infrastructure, spend less than it takes in and cannot operate within a balanced budget, should not be offering loans of any type for any reason.

County can’t fix potholes in roads but can give people loans to build ADUs? There is such a government web of loans, grants, programs wasting huge amounts shoving money through various departments, duplicating programs or missing targets altogether. Each agency taking some to administer with a plethora of assorted rules. No wonder grant writing has become a whole industry unto itself. “The federal government wastes at least $247 billion in taxpayer money each year. ”
https://www.cnbc.com/2023/04/18/heres-how-the-federal-government-wastes-tax-money.html

Despite the utter waste, if anyone suggests just being more practical, the voices of social lobbies rise up to condemn the inhumane of depriving the poor. Yet poverty keeps chugging along.

It’s good to know the Supervisors have found the money to balance the budget, fully fund all essential services, and have enough left over to loan out money — who knew we had five financial wizards running the County?

“Funding is limited, and demand is expected to be high.”

Translation: “Don’t get your hopes up suckers — we’re just doing this to make it look like we’re doing something about the housing crunch while actually doing little or nothing.”

If they really wanted to help they’d streamline the permitting process, dial back the regulations, and waive the permit fees — actions that would help everyone wanting to build an ADU instead of a select few.

Ha ha!! That very last line of their fact sheet…” A building inspector will determine what health and safety or code violations exist” Well LOL!! After the aggressive and heavily punitive abatement progrom now Nobody I know wants anything to do with those guys or to open any doors to them. Myself included even tho I have a 1960 construction supposedly grandfathered in but who knows- they make stuff up and then there you are- screwed!! They have all the power. While this might sound nice in the surface I gotta tell everybody THINK before applying!!! The Building Department is NOT your friend…( and neither are the county supervisors)
