Burnt Ranch Elementary Hosts National History Day Competition
This is a press release from the Trinity County Office of Education:
On Wednesday, February 26th, Burnt Ranch Elementary School proudly hosted this year’s Trinity County National History Day (NHD) competition. The event brought together 4th to 8th graders from across the county for a day of creativity, learning, and historical exploration with a backdrop of the scenic Trinity River, offering a unique setting for the budding historians of the future to showcase their research and passion for history.
The competition featured 41 student projects, all centered around this year’s NHD theme, “Rights & Responsibilities in History.” Participants represented three local schools: Burnt Ranch Elementary, Trinity Center Elementary, and Hayfork Elementary, competing for the chance to attend the National History Day state finals at California State University, Sacramento, from May 2-4.
The top finalists from Burnt Ranch Elementary included Chloe Strouse, Theron Ambrosini, and Lincoln Walendy, who were awarded medals for their outstanding presentations. In addition, Kestrel Wilde and Andrew Hufnagal from Burnt Ranch, along with Oliver Stewart and Dean Carpenter from Trinity Center, earned runner-up honors.
The projects covered a wide array of historical topics, showcasing the students’ deep engagement with the past. Presentations included subjects like the struggle for minimum wages for women, the Hague Convention and soldiers, Muhammad Ali’s activism, the Church Reformation of 1517, the heroic Navajo Code Talkers, and protests of Tiananmen Square, among others.
“The students brought history to life through their diverse projects, from 2-D posters and websites to documentaries, podcasts, and large exhibits” commented Trinity County Superintendent of Schools Fabio Robles, “This event not only highlights their creativity but also reminds us that history is more than a subject—it’s a living, breathing narrative that connects us all.”
Judges and other onlookers agreed that the competition was a testament to the student’s hard work, passion, and commitment to understanding the complex tapestry of history and its ongoing relevance to our world today.
Burnt Ranch Superintendent Amanda Platt concurred, “Burnt Ranch Elementary School is proud to have hosted such a meaningful event and looks forward to supporting these young historians as they continue their journey to the state finals.”
