Huffman Town Hall Probes ‘Dire Threats to Our Democracy’

The consequences of Donald Trump’s reascendance to the White House – this time accompanied by Elon Musk – are triggering widespread fear and Congressman Jared Huffman has urged people to “hang in there” and “stay strong.” During a Feb. 24 phone-in town hall meeting, Huffman said he’s doing as much outreach as he can in an era of overhauled federal government.
“I know that people are worried and alarmed about many of the developments that we’ve seen in the first month of the second Trump presidency,” he continued. “And I want everyone to know something – I am fully engaged, this is not business as usual and I do consider many of these events to be dire threats to our democracy, the rule of law and core American values.”
Huffman’s list of examples included the firing of 18 inspector generals, the “illegal” freezing of federal funding, “thoughtless and cruel layoffs,” and Musk and his “private sector tech bros doing things that no outside party should be allowed to do including having full access to a lot of our really sensitive taxpayer data.”
Also of concern are Trump’s changes to foreign policy. These include apparent “abandonment of our ally Ukraine,” “cozying up to Putin,” and the firing of military generals.
The federal budget needs to be renewed by March 14 and Huffman said the country is “careening toward a possible Republican shutdown of the government.”
A new spending plan is expected from the Republican house majority this week, Huffman continued, and he advised the audience to be on “high alert” for cuts, especially to Medicaid.
Asked what can be done to stop Musk from accessing “our private information,” Huffman said the courts are a hedge against it and Democrats have introduced legislation to “get Musk out of federal agencies and out of our sensitive data.”
He also encouraged people to be engaged and make their opinions known.
Callers also said they’re concerned about layoffs of federal employees and cuts to publicly-funded organizations like the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
Huffman said the “budget line item for (the CPB) is in real trouble – it is going to be targeted, they hate public broadcasting” and he’s “not sure that my democratic colleagues and I will be able to protect it the way I would like.”
A question about what will happen when legal challenges reach the Trump-friendly Supreme Court prompted Huffman to describe some of the President’s executive orders and directives as blatantly illegal and likely to be struck down.
But others might not and Huffman questioned whether Trump will defy court orders.
“We’re going to find out a lot of interesting things in the weeks and months ahead and some of it could present a constitutional crisis,” he said. “I don’t want to be too alarmist, but we’ve never seen anything like this.”
Asked about the impacts of a government shutdown, Huffman said one is already happening.
“That’s just the reality of what’s going on, with thousands and thousands of employees being laid off, sometimes illegally and in ways that the courts are trying to stop,” he continued.
Some actions will be hard to reverse. The United States Agency for International Development has been “shut down” with employees “shut out of their computer systems,” Huffman said, adding, “I consider this the beginning of a functional government shutdown by Donald Trump and Elon Musk and Republicans.”
One caller said many of his neighbors are worried that “nothing can be done to stop this insanity” and he’s worried about the health of a neighbor who is “really depressed.”
The caller asked Huffman if “there’s anything that can be done by Democrats to try to stop this.”
“I’m concerned too – I’m not gonna sugar-coat this, I’m not try to gonna gloss over with happy talk what’s actually going on,” Huffman said. “There is reason for dire concern about our democracy, about these federal services and programs that we count on.”
But Republicans only have a three-seat house majority, he continued, and “come March 14, [Democrats’] votes are going to be needed by Republicans in order to fund the government so we will leverage those moments of power that we do have.”
He added the GOP will need “lots of democratic votes at several points over the coming months and we will use those points of leverage to try and push back in meaningful ways on all of this.”
Mid-term elections will happen in 2026 and Huffman noted there’s a history of power shifts in mid-terms.
Public reaction – as seen in town halls like Huffman’s – is also influential, he said. “Tell your neighbor to hang in there, you are in this together with a lot of other people including your congressman and we’ve just got to stay strong,” Huffman told the caller.

Politicians ARE government workers by default. They get paid by taxpayers. That 30% isn’t a lie, as there’s a preference for gov jobs to veterans. But they get a decent salary. What you do with it will determine your personal “rags to riches” story. Invest and save wisely, stay reasonably healthy and you can do just fine. I know a number of vets that went and started their own companies, left government for that, and became government contractors and suppliers. Heck, there’s a ton of folks that do just that especially in the DoD and Doe.

Look, the right wing has always been good at getting low information voters riled up over social issues since I was aware of politics, and I’m in my 40s. We are a huge government and there will be waste, and we are the world’s superpower so we do need to fill that role or it’s filled by someone else. Sure we have about an 8X larger defense budget than Russia on paper, but Russia and China both have far larger military budgets than the USA in reality, hence Trump’s sudden fixation on cutting the military budgets of the USA, Russia, and China by half. When you have a $1trillion military budget and your adversary has a $150 billion military budget, but our artillery shells cost $8400 each, and Russia’s cost $600 each, and that price difference holds true across the board, guess who actually has a larger military budget? And guess who had better get a handle on the waste, fraud, and abuse?

I just don’t want him to swing too far (like he always does) and put us in a position of weakness internationally, when we get tested. Because we will. I’m in line to get some real tax breaks as Trump has provided in the past. I am not in flavor of the a foreign born billionaire making changes to our govt and lifestyles and having the balls to tell us we may need to experience some hardships. The change is needed and would not come under normal circumstances so this approach maybe the only one able to provide a real change. It’s nothing less than poorly executed as we can see by the call backs of terminated folks and failure to identify critical personnel before the ax falls. I’ve worked hard and saved and taken advantage of markets and tax breaks as they were available so I’ll be fine. Federal employees make up 4.5% of the federal budget. Not sure you’re going to find a whole lot of savings there.

Well i was a federal employee for 10 years and a state employee for 10 years after that i would have to state rather safely that my 20 years worth of governmental service qualifies my comments better than just about most commenters on this site . Well it is simple the more a company is able to save in costs of providing a product or service the lower the price points can be , being as people are driven to greed if one company is selling their whatever for a price that someone else can make for less they will create that company and sell that product for less meaning the cost of that product or service will drop or the company that is over priced will be forced to lower their price also dropping the cost of living . I agree with pretty much everything John said. For years the Democrats have been big time drama-queens but now they’ve gone overboard with people like Huffmen leading them on. Trumps latest win has them dog paddling in circles and grasping for a victory, any victory. So much so, that 0.125% percent of the county’s population showing up for a recent street side protest Is a massive win and worthy of Front Page News.
The rich and elite have won by getting the poorest and least educated to look at their fellow Americans as the enemy. My heart breaks for this country.
Maybe that situation has been substantially caused by the liberal’s angry rhetoric that everyone who disagrees with them is a fascist, racist, xenophobe, etc or as Hillary Clinton put it, “a basket full of deplorables.” That seems pretty far along the way of making Americans see each other as enemies.

After Trump is done with the federal government he should begin a federal investigation of the large number of LEO’s and some judges business dealings and how they acquired various properties. I think an excellent place to start would be the Mendocino County Drug task force and Mendocino judges who have many millions of dollars of properties.

Huffman and all of his cronies on both sides of the political aisle have had it their way for wayyyyyy too long. Trump got elected because everyday people are done with these people who think they are rulers, not representatives. And there’s a big wake up call and toilet flushing going on. I wonder what Jared Huffman is doing as a “fully engaged” rep? I would hope he has the cajones to try and rebuild his party. The adults are no longer in the room and I worry we will become a one party system. My advice to Jared: Instead of talking about a threat to our democracy, why not tell the truth? Democracy is working right now. It’s transparent and under President Trump, many things are happening at once. He doesn’t need you standing on a street corner with a sign, he needs you working with him for a better America. Do your job and stop with the hand wringing and hyperbole that you use to get re-elected.
