Huffman and Lofgren Condemn Musk for NOAA Takeover, Threat to Weather Service, Blame Project 2025

Press release from U.S. House Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Jared Huffman:Jared huffman press release image

U.S. House Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Jared Huffman (CA-02) and Science, Space, and Technology Committee Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (CA-18) issued the following statement:

Elon Musk and his DOGE hackers are ransacking their way through the federal government, unlawfully gaining unfettered access to Americans’ private information and gutting programs people depend on. Now they have reached NOAA where they’re wreaking havoc on the scientific and regulatory systems that protect American families’ safety and jobs,” said Ranking Members Huffman and Lofgren.

“Americans rely on NOAA’s services, day in and day out. The National Weather Service warns communities of incoming severe weather, such as hurricanes, wildfires, and tornadoes. It provides information to emergency managers and decision-makers to support our nation’s commerce – including aviation weather forecasts to prevent weather-related aviation disasters. Trump continues to leave Americans across the nation behind by ripping the rug out from under the programs they depend on most.

“This is also a blatant attempt to further the climate denialism that animates industry, and by extension, the Trump administration. It’s no secret that Trump and Big Oil donors want to ignore the science and erase all mention of climate change from the books. And their game plan is deviously simple: dismantle the agencies at the forefront of climate action and get rid of anyone who stands in their way. Fossil fuel-backed groups and their allies in Congress have been trying to do this for years – and now that Trump has handed over the keys to the castle to an unelected billionaire, they’re burning it down. This string of egregious, illegal power grabs and attacks on our democracy cannot stand.”

BACKGROUND

Trump’s Project 2025 laid the groundwork for these attacks:

  • Page 664: “The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) should be dismantled and many of its functions eliminated, sent to other agencies, privatized, or placed under the control of states and territories.”
  • Page 675: “Break up NOAA, focus NWS [National Weather Service] on commercial operations.”
  • Pages 675-676: “Together, these form a colossal operation that has become one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry and, as such, is harmful to future U.S. prosperity […] OAR is, however, the source of much of NOAA’s climate alarmism. The preponderance of its climate-change research should be disbanded.”

NOAA is responsible for dozens of programs that Americans depend on every day that are all at risk under Trump’s Project 2025 and the Elon purge. Key services and functions at risk include:

  • Cutting-edge science that provides real-time weather information across the United States that our apps and forecasters depend on, free of charge
  • Programs that provide ocean safety data for shippers and port operators, ensuring the safe delivery of consumer goods we rely on every day
  • Critical monitoring and warning systems for chronic flooding, tsunamis, wildfires, hurricanes, and other extreme weather events
  • Programs that monitor the seafood supply chain for food safety, fraud, and human rights violations
  • Fisheries programs that help provide sustainable sources of income for thousands of small fishing businesses across the United States

“The National Weather Service warns communities of incoming severe weather, such as hurricanes, wildfires, and tornadoes.”

The government can get that info from the evening news.

“This is also a blatant attempt to further the climate denialism that animates industry, and by extension, the Trump administration.”

if NOAA isn’t funding the “studies”, “climate change” can’t be happening… brilliant!

Where do you think the evening news gets the weather information to report.
“if NOAA isn’t funding the “studies”, “climate change” can’t be happening… brilliant!”
I’m not sure if you know the definition of “Brilliant”
Look if you really think climate change is a hoax, you need data to demonstrate that.
Besides, how’s it hurt you? California’s emissions rules don’t do very well at fighting greenhouse gasses. They increase fuel consumption for the sake of particulate emissions. So you can breathe easy there cowboy dress-up boy. Go buy a Suburban! A 20 year old VW gets better mileage than a new Prius. A new diesel has lower particulate pollution than gas engines now. This Prop 65 style zero tolerance ‘tude towards the diesel got Lazer focus from CARB at the expense of fuel efficiency.
But that’s science so you may be missing the boat. Let other people work towards common sense solutions.

And the evening news gets its weather info from . . . . The government. Like ..,. Ah. . . . Mmmmm . . .NOAA and NWS. Who knew? Trump Denial Syndrome is rampant.

AI could better process available data, distribute forecasts and warnings than humans – better job at minimal cost. NWS would best accomplish its purpose with nothing but tech support department. Quit wasting taxpayer money! If climate change was real Humboldt Bay would’ve been out of its banks 20 years ago.

I don’t have to help either of them. By will nor force. Good luck with that enforcement. You don’t have enough jail space or even people to do the enforcing, since you laid them all off.. I’m sure I’m not speaking for just myself either.

They just don’t get it. They’ll continue to invent villains, and push the lie of impending doom. Void of constructive solutions they’re forced to default to wild assumptions and bribed “experts”. Musk will follow the money and their narrative will go the way of the Doodoo.

A rich Russian told me, in April of 2016,
“You gave us Yeltsin, we will give you Trump!”
Clinton ushered in the Russian age of the oligarchs. We thought it’d be cute to have Yeltsin as a drunk puppet. Russia ended up having to encourage military personel to sell anything they could get their hands on to cover wages, and head off a military coup. Russia had a yard sale on everything from socks and vests, AKs, to Ilyushin-72s. My friend ended up with a pre Revolution bakery, which now is like the Russian Starbucks, hotels, and restaurants. He was 40, and at 15 was driving a missile transport with a bunch of other kids around Siberia. I asked how he ended up in business like that. He only said,
“It was terrible time, a lot of people die.”

Trump invented Jan. 6 and his current effort to replace civil service employees and IGs with sycophants and supplicants. These things did and are happening.

Not the whole thing, not yet, but Vlad could have done the foreword and Viktor Orban the epilogue. If you can’t destroy America from without, do it from within. Cheaper that way and Modern Republicans do the heavy lifting. Get the Americans to throw away 250 years of sweat and struggle over an evil wretch like Trump. Simply astounding.

Whoever wrote this left biased article is spewing blatant misinformation. The Heritage Foundation is the author of project 2025, not Trump. The Heritage Foundation has been around since 1973 long before Trump was ever in politics. This should be edited to reflect the truth, not rabid liberal feelings…

Project 2025 was written, as you say by the Heritage Foundation who supports and agrees with it and so does the Republican Party. The Constitution is older than the Heritage Foundation. So what? It’s no good now? You can’t put out this document (2025) and then pretend that Trump is not behind it. Have your cake and eat it, too? It’s a Republican plan. Win with it or lose with it. Hint: lose with it.

So the Heritage Foundation wrote it and Trump only endorses it. What a relief! Trump loves the H,F. around since 1973 but has utter contempt for the U.S. Constitution around since 1776. Trump Dystopian Syndrome in Republicans is spreading faster than bird flu in cattle.

guys…the reason they’re doing this is so they can take away free public access to NOAA data and make the public pay for products and services offered by corporations. A former NOAA official quoted in the Guardian today: it [has] been a longtime goal of corporations that rely on Noaa data to prevent the agency from making the data public, instead of giving it directly to private corporations that create products based on it, such as weather forecasting services.

At that point I’ll just go back to looking out a window or calling an out of town friend to look out theirs if I’m heading that direction. I’m not paying some auto-pay subscription for every goddamned thing.

Well… the last 2 are a bit of joke. So, how did NOAA get those duties ??
Let me guess.

  • Programs that monitor the seafood supply chain for food safety, fraud, and human rights violations

  • Fisheries programs that help provide sustainable sources of income for thousands of small fishing businesses across the United States

So, Bozo, you don’t want the seafood supply chain to be safe? And you don’t want small American fishing businesses to survive? You think that’s a joke?

You say “let me guess” and then just quote the press release. Completely pointless.

Go figure.

Food monitoring is done by the FDA and USDA and some smaller ones. I bet they want to give those departments the axe too. If that happened the results will be disastrous if timely recalls can’t be given out. Or someone has to pay a sub for the data. Pathogens don’t care about paychecks.

I turned in a serial killer to the fbi and fortuna police Nov of 22. They couldn’t be bothered to look at the evidence. Or return a phone call. I turned him in before people started going missing.. and more people are going to go missing, until law enforcement pays attention.

Well the thing is, they are not going to give you day by day details of an investigation, so you really don’t know what they did or didn’t look at. They have to determine if your “tips” have merit or are just some random info they can’t verify as accurate. But you won’t know if they’re paying attention or not. Not their responsibility to keep you personally informed unless you are an actual (survived) victim. Spewing a ton of details that can be disseminated hurts their efforts in reality. A killer, knowing they’re being followed, can simply go into hiding or move elsewhere without notice either. That’s what they do.

No thanks. I don’t want ABC/Disney giving me my weather based on how much they want to push the next reality show or ticket sales.

However, there is absolutely nothing keeping regular Joe weather nerds, some of whom might have been kicked out of NOAA or NWS from starting their own weather service. Lots of educated, experienced folks out there that aren’t buying into the BS.

Also, you idiots, don’t you think it’s a bit counterproductive to lay off half a million people with good jobs? That’s billions of tax payer monies that you saved ONE TIME because now, those same folks don’t have disposable income to buy stuff, which is how an economy works, and now your tax base goes with it. Better get yourselves a 4×4 for those roads that are about to go to sh-t. Have fun paying cash for your next surgery. Get your own chickens while you’re at it too. You’ll need them.

So what, we don’t need NOAA because Jerry and Gavin have proclaimed a “perpetual drought”. Why would we need weather analysis when it’s hot and dry “perpetually”.

If you, like the police and fbi don’t belive me, we’ll wait a couple of months. It doesn’t matter how ridiculous it sounds, that’s why there is this stuff called evidence. I’m not here to argue with you. Listen or don’t I don’t care.
