[Update: Detour on Hwy 271 Also Closed] Highway 101 Closed Near Leggett Due to Mudslide

Update 1:25 p.m.: As of 1:23 p.m. this afternoon, the detour route on Highway 271 has been closed due to a slide. Earlier in the day, the slide impacted the roadway, however the crew was able to remove the debris and reopen the detour. However, Humboldt County’s Second District Supervisor, Michelle Bushnell told Redheaded Blackbelt that the road “could close again at anytime”, which has in fact happened.
Caltrans Public Information Officer, Manny Machado confirmed the closure of both Highway 101 and the detour route on Highway 271. Machado said, at this time, there is no estimated time of reopening for either roadway.

Bent bastard
I just visited the CalTrans Facebook page. Someone who was just at the 271 said it’s now closed due to another slide. 12:45 pm 2/3. I am not seeing an update reflecting that info. Read the comments.

A very bad stretch of highway that needs a complete overhaul. Every winter this happens after a few rainstorms that loosen the ground allowing it to slide down and partially or completely cover the highway. I realize Caltrans has miles of roads to keep up with, but this complete fix needs to be done in the summer months to put a stop to the slides. I am thankful no vehicles were caught in the slide.
If it’s the same hill I went past a couple days ago it’s a bare hill for several hundred feet upslope. What exactly do you want them to do about it? They’ve been chasing slides for a century and it seems they spend $10 million scraping off a hill, fill it with rock and drainage…and it slides again anyway.
Caltrans won’t tell you, but if you are desperate The Bell Springs Road from Garberville to Commings is a route. Also Highway 1 from Leggett to Willits. You will have to be very desperate to take either route. At least you still have options… So far.
The last time Google Maps suggested that route, half of California it seems got stuck on the first hill before CT got a clue and noted it on the Quick maps. But yeah, good luck.
Slides on Hwy 1. Still passable though. https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/
How is the mucky mud just past Sawmill on the Alderpoint road doing???
That has all been paved over. I haven’t driven it since the rain started (not that it should matter to the paved spots) but I did go up last Thursday, and all the construction spots were paved and smooth… almost felt like I wasn’t on AP Road. LOL.
Would 101 to legget and around on 1 be an option for someone coming up from SFO? Family is traveling up tomorrow mid day and don’t want to send them through redding
If it was my family, I’d have them go 101 with the pilot cars, checking road conditions at Willits. If 101 is closed, I’d take Hwy 20 at Willits to Hwy 1 and back to 101 at Leggett, but you have to check those road conditions as well. I definitely wouldn’t send someone from out of the area over Bell Springs.
Thanks Lisa. Good advice.
If it were my family I would tell them to stay home until it dries out.
