After an accident when your vehicle leaves the highway and overturns, it could possibly give you some injuries that you may not be aware of at the time. Never decline medical treatment from an ambulance driver, CHP, etc. It amazes me that all three patients turned down treatment. Was the accident cause by one or more being intoxicated, on drugs, etc., and they did not want medical to notice. More likely one or more were not paying attention when something happened ahead of them, and they slammed on the brakes, sending their vehicle(s) sliding along on a rain-soaked highway. I do hope all three will be okay.

Truth that. I was in an accident where I banged my elbow but, while painful, the pain disappeared fast. And the stress high. I therefore missed that a rod had hit my knee, ripped cartilage without breaking skin. It did not swell until the next day by which time the other driver was long gone. The police reported it as a no injury accident.
If the paramedic examines that doesn’t mean you need to take an expensive ambulance ride even if they push it.

i am assuming it was weather related, as i was on the road at the same time of the accident. it was extremely rainy and if you were behind anyone, the mist was an added hindrance. i’m hoping it was just weather related and nothing else. I agree that you should always get checked out after an accident, injuries are not always obvious and adrenaline can make you feel things differently or that aren’t there at all. i hope they recover quickly

I hope everybody recovers completely. If the weather is that bad, you pull over or get off the main road and wait it out. Arrive late but arrive alive. The lesson here is that it is weather-related if the weather is resisted. If you can’t see and the rain is sideways, and the road is slick, don’t just keep driving under the rubric: it’s the weather’s fault! If you have reception, tell the folks you are fine. Slow down, take a break.

I had a very close friend to had an accident and her only complaint was “I just bumped my head a little. I don’t even have a lump.” A week later she was found dead… she had a subdural hematoma that finally put enough pressure on her brain to kill her.

So yeah. Take that ride to get checked out.

Very sorry about your friend. Always should have a paramedic check you.

My sister had a similar experience in Denver years ago. She was rear-ended at low speed and likely had some minor whiplash though at the time she felt no discomfort. A number of days later, she started having problems with her vision. She went in for scans and it was discovered she had some form of cranial clot which they then treated. She was fine after that.

“Ambulance Driver”. Ok, this term kills me every time I hear it. In the 1970’s there was a hit TV show, “Emergency” with Johnny & Roy. They were paramedics and always had an ambulance driver. This is not true today. You will 100% get an EMT-1 or an EMT-P (paramedic). Highly trained medical professionals! Stop ? calling them drivers!

Heavy rain at the time. I came upon the accident just as the first CHP arrived and there was standing water on the road in places. Lots of spray, too many people with no headlights on, especially for some reason little dark grey cars (like the one still on the road in the accident)
Could have been visibility, or someone hydroplaned, but that’s why you’re supposed to slow down when it rains. 2 weeks of sun and everyone forgets what winter driving is like.

When it’s raining, SLOW DOWN and
TURN ON YOUR HEADLIGHTS!!
I am absolutely amazed at the number of drivers who are not smart enough to turn on their cars headlights when it’s raining!
When you are at highway speeds, the spray that is thrown up from yours and other cars will make your car virtually invisible.

Also turning on your headlights is the law when raining.

But please don’t turn on your “high beams”, even during the day, even on divided highways like 101, if there is oncoming traffic. It doesn’t make you anymore visible, in fact it blinds the person trying to see you. And it’s also the law. I seem to be seeing a lot more of this lately around here, and with the super bright modern headlights…big pickup trucks… it’s TOO BRIGHT!

I saw several folks on the highway mid-day today doing 70+ on rain so hard you couldn’t see much past 50 mph. SLOW DOWN!!! in these conditions or fog (and, yes, the spray was so blinding I slowed down to 40 until they passed.) Not just that, these are ” bully drivers” – riding right up on people’s tails to force them to move.
Also saw a pick-up run up on a 10′ berm on Central coming out of McK – thankfully it was stopped before it went over the top and into some mfd homes below.

If you feel like everyone is tailgating, maybe you are a slow driver and need to stay in the right lane.

Shortly after clearing the accident mentioned in the article, I was in the fast lane doing 60, passing several cars doing 55 in the slow lane. It was pouring, and a white van came up on me, no headlights, doing 70, and tailgated me a car length behind until I could clear the cars I was passing. As soon as I pulled to the right he zoomed on ahead, doing 70 again. It was like passing a rollover 2 car crash in the rain had no effect. I guess he was in a super hurry because the crash backup slowed him down.

Yup. Upvote still not working. Drivers’s ed. would help. No real concept of what they are doing. Like driving their living room sofa down the street. Clueless.

Twice today was a black car behind me. They were using windshield wipers. CA plates. No lights.
Reminds me of bicyclists wearing black and dark gray. We can’t see you!!

Remember to Turn off cruise control.
“If you are driving in the rain, always, always disable your cruise control. And slow down. If you do start to hydroplane, let up on the gas, hold the steering wheel with both of your hands, and steer in the direction of the skid. ”

My sister was involved in this accident. We are not sure what contributed to her and her spouse being hit by the other vehicle, but I am aware that they were driving safely and the woman who hit them was very apologetic and offered financial reimbursement for their car.

Did anyone ask “Are your tires bald?”
Seriously, if your tires are bald, buy new ones.
