A chaotic series of events unfolded on Broadway in Eureka this morning about 10:30, beginning with a suspected intentional hit-and-run involving a bicyclist and ending in a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Broadway and West Wabash.

According to eyewitness Jeff Osborne, the incident began at West Hawthorne and Broadway when he saw a white minivan strike a bicyclist and then back up over the bicycle. The bicyclist was not hit the second time.

When the vehicle sped north on Broadway. Osborne followed the minivan.

As the suspect vehicle approached the intersection of West Wabash and Broadway, it ran a red light, crashing into a Toyota RAV4 at approximately 40 miles per hour. The impact caused the RAV4 to roll onto its side before righting itself, according to emergency personnel speaking over the scanner. The driver of the RAV4, a woman, sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital.

The crash caused a closure of the number one northbound lane on Broadway for a short time, but Broadway is now clear but Wabash east of Broadway is still closed as of 11:20 a.m.

After the collision, the suspect vehicle continued partway up West Wabash before stopping. Osborne and another man opened the mini van’s doors. The female driver attempted to flee the scene but was detained by Osborne until police arrived.

The bicyclist’s condition and whereabouts remain unknown at this time. According to Sgt. Ryan Swanson, the Eureka Police Department is investigating the connection between the two incidents and the motivations behind the suspect’s actions.

Get rid of the lights and put in a Round about, Seem like the amount of crashes there a lot of people are color blind.

I think that is a great idea but probably wouldn’t work due to speed and heavy traffic and 4 lanes. I am glad they have put those round abouts in places and they do work cutting the accidents for sure.

I totally agree on the roundabouts.
But, maybe read the article first and save this conversation for another day.

This lady was literally chasing down the guy on the bike to run him over. There’s video of her following him and them yelling at each other, and then her doing a I turn to follow him when he turned around to get away from her. After she hit him she was fleeing the scene… A round about would have been useless and she probably would have just gone straight through the middle

Not gonna happen. Broadway is also a US highway so Cal Trans will never allow it. Nor should it be unless you want to see big rigs and travel trailers roll over every day. People should have supported a bypass when they had the chance, which would make a roundabout possible.

Leon stopped the bypass of eureka. Now you’ve got a traffic mess.

It wasn’t just them. There were others. And a number of them have either passed away or their businesses have closed. That trail from the mall to Del Norte? That was a land trade that was supposed to be part of it. Had that been put in, yea there would be a downtrend but those are temporary and some of those that argued against it went out of biz anyway. Had it been in, Broadway could have had a nice decorated median and a calmer street, but this is how it is.

There are many examples of Caltrans approving roundabouts on state highways so it’s erroneous to say they’d never allow it – and if they did no one would be going 40 mph – traffic keeps moving but at a slower and safer pace with sideswipes instead of head ons – the main obstacle is people already don’t know how to drive!!

Drive this intersection every day several times for almost 20 years now and the amount of people who have no idea how to handle it is always alarming.

People treat Wabash and Hawthorne like ski jumps apparently, usually trying to beat the yellow lights that have been yellow for a bit already.

So far it looks like Shakespeare – Hell hath no fury like s woman scorned. But who really knows. It’s not for me to judge. I hope no one was seriously injured.

Roundabouts are way over the head of folks around here. Arcatans are still dumbfounded as to how to use them. Maybe accompanied by an instructional video and a bong load? I don’t know what it would take. Seems self explanatory but then you go to Arcata…,

A round about would not stop an insane person intent on injuring another from doing so. The logic of this statement is the polar opposite of logical.

There are more reckless drivers lately. It would nice if there was a grant for increased patrols. Kudos to those that stopped the alleged van driver.

I am so disgusted with everything in this county. It has changed so damn much since I first moved here in 1989. People seem to get away with everything anymore. I watch people on the daily drive like complete idiots. Nobody stops at stop signs anymore, and everyone seems to think that they have the right of way. I have found that I want to move out of here, in fact I have come to hate California. I can’t wait to get out of here and move to Tennessee. This place is too dysfunctional for me.

Yes, for whatever reason the driving is worse here lately, aggressive, reckless.

Thursday night on my camera I caught a vehicle driving into driveways and on and along the sidewalk chasing a guy attempting to kill him with his car. He then proceed to drive insanely around our block screaming, honking, skidding out and running stop signs for a solid 20 minutes looking for the dude. Later on someone gets killed on broadway. Now this.

Last night at a 4-way stop a vehicle turned in front of me even though I had the right of way. I gave them the friendly double honk to let vehicles behind me know why I wasn’t proceeding. The vehicle that cut in front of me gave me a double honk back. Idk if they had road rage, or were drunk or high or maybe all three, but the drivers are getting too reckless.

A number of years ago, I have a vivid memory of a woman following me with her car down Wabash and honking her car’s horn and yelling at me.
i eventually reached the Wabash and Broadway intersection, she was still behind me, still honking the car’s horn and yelling that the bike lane had ended, and that I now need to be on the sidewalk, and use the crosswalk, and not in the through travel lane waiting for the signal light.
Thankfully, this incident only reached a verbal level on her part, and not escalating to the level of this incident.,

Something doesn’t add up. I was a full-time bicyclist for over 20 years. Why didn’t the guy on the bike stick around to file a police report? Hope.this woman has her license revoked.

I HAVE to say since H Street has been reduced to two lanes the number of people running the Stop lights at Sixth and Seventh Streets and 14th and Wabash lights has at least tripled. Plus the speeding vehicles are traveling at 45 mph or faster on H street around 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm and travelling to thru the Henderson and Harris has has quadrupled. A lot of BIG Dodge and similar Heavy Duty trucks with young drivers and Construction trucks with lumber racks and 2X4’s and larger and hauling large trailers running thru Harris with drivers on their cell phones all day long. I live on H beyond Harris Street. Someone and families including children will be losing their lives. And do you think the trucks will stop. NOPE! They will just keep driving forward because they are going TOO FAST to stop when the lights turn yellow. It’s all about making the money. The last accident had traffic to past thru Henderson streets. I blame Donald for the changes.

Yes. I’ve noticed that. It seems like traffic calming should be increased everywhere or drivers tend to spill out in other areas where there’s less traffic calming.

That’s is probably half the story just guessing. My sarcastic reply would be the party started yesterday and didn’t stop yet. And miss Marlene Anderson, I grew up here. But spent a few years in NM still have family there. And I feel you. Nm would be quieter and more peaceful for sure. California is really in bad shape. Gorgeous area. But .

There are posts on Facebook about this, and what happened prior to it. Everything indicates that they knew each other, possibly even that they were in a relationship. He was trying to get away from her/get her to leave him alone before this. There’s always a good possibility that he took off hoping that she wasn’t going to turn around and come back to hit him again, or even that he maybe has a reason to not want to speak to law enforcement (maybe a warrant?).

Last hear a drunk guy slammed a car at Wildberrys infront of me. I told him in a strong voice he had to stay and I wouldn’t let him leave the scene. Arcata Police treated me like crap and told me I should be arrested for holding him against his will. He went shopping while he waited fir the cops. But I was detained and threatened arrest for telling him he couldn’t leave. Be careful.

When you deal with law enforcement officers follow a few simple rules. First, recognize their authority. Follow all instructions. Cooperate and tell the truth. Be polite and respectful. It’s not hard to understand.
