Third Time’s a Charm? Major Quakes Seem to Favor Smacking Humboldt in December

Humboldt County has a knack for keeping December interesting—especially if you’re a fan of earthquakes. Over the last four years, three major temblors have shaken the North Coast during the holiday season, each larger than the last.

Now, in 2024, the trilogy has gained a new chapter with the largest quake yet—a major 7.0 magnitude shaker that struck yesterday morning, December 5. Early reports indicate much less damage than in 2022. Though some schools closed, as did some grocery stores, hospitals and major roadways remained open.
Caltrans reports that Fernbridge remains open. They do say, however, “A preliminary inspection showed minor damage that can be addressed in project-related activities at a later date.” [Image from Caltrans]

Yesterday’s quake is tied for 7th place in the largest quakes ever to hit California. The last 7.0 was in 1940 and left 9 dead.
But yesterday’s was the third biggest in Humboldt County–in 1980 there was a 7.4 that injured six people and in 1992 there was a 7.2 near Petrolia that injured 356.
This year’s earthquake has firmly cemented December as the month that truly rocks and shatters expectations. The season’s seismic greetings continue to shake up Humboldt, leaving their mark with every earth-shattering jolt.

If you or your business were affected by the earthquake, please report damages to the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services (OES) by filling out the 2024 December Earthquake form.This form is meant to help Humboldt County OES assess the level of damage sustained by the community. Financial or other individual assistance is not coordinated or provided through this damage reporting process.
Be Prepared
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and be prepared for aftershocks. The U.S. Geological Survey currently estimates that the likelihood of another 7.0 M earthquake is less than 1%, however it is estimated that there is a 53% chance of an earthquake in the 5.0 M ranges and a 7% likelihood of a 6.0 M over the next week.For more information on what to do before, during and after an earthquake, please visit ready.gov.earthquakes.

At one time it was part of that county, when Humboldt didn’t yet exist and was later carved out of Trinity in the 1850s.
Cape Mendocino was named in the 16th century long before California and its division into counties existed.
Cape Mendocino has never been part of Mendocino County but was part of Trinity until 1853 when Humboldt County was created.

Ok people we need the geologist explanation. All I know is there are winter southern currents bringing warmer water temperatures north. If this effects earthquakes I don’t know. But ! Wholly cow people this is the west Coast and Earthquakes are part of living here! That was a disaster disgrace from what the reports are. I definitely am upset people caused such an uproar . The county officials obviously ARE NOT prepared! And Arcata and Eureka should never force evacuations!!! It’s a good test to see that people are stuck in LA LA land and think a MILD shaker is going to DESTROY the coast!!!!!! HELLO!!

I have to share this with you. This is true for me and my neighbor who causally mentioned, “Did you hear the loud Boom? ( Just before the earthquake). I said yeah, you heard it too? This is minutes after the event. She is steady minded and was surprised she heard it too. Where I’m going with this is if we were to create a scenario where a bomb went off, immediately the energy that is a zillion atoms make a concerted sound. It wasn’t harsh, it dominated the horizon west to east. It wasn’t a roar but it was energy dominating the sky, heading towards me as the rolling did, directly underfoot. Right under me. I don’t think this was a one off. It was a shot accross the bow. Folks, I hate to break it to, but if we freeze here with a lot of rain- warms up- that’s earthquake weather as we enter the winter equinox. Why December 21 so much for our events? It’s not over this month, it’s going to be bigger, so don’t relax too much now. I think we can have a repeat experience.

I was watching live news after the quake and it showed circles showing the aftershocks, 15 at that time, around noon.
What caught my eye was a 5.0 that seems to have been right at the shore, and on top of the San Andreas fault.
Only a day before the quake, a YouTube channel that deals with weather, etc, had a warning, saying we have been having quakes all along the fault this year. They predicted a quake. I guess it was Rio Del.
But it makes me wonder about a more massive quake, involving the whole fault. The big one, as they say.
