Residents Subdue Thieves in Shady Lane Shootout; Two Suspects in Custody, Injured

This is a press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:Mendocino County Sheriff feature

On 07/22/2024 at approximately 3:11 P.M., Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to a property in the 24000 block of Shady Lane in Covelo for a report of an in-progress burglary. It was reported that residents interrupted multiple subjects stealing marijuana, who subsequently fled the location in a red pickup and a U-Haul box truck.

Law enforcement from numerous agencies throughout Mendocino County responded to include representatives from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, CalFire Prevention Officers, California State Parks, and Round Valley Tribal Police Department.

A short time later, the caller to Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch provided updated information that a U-Haul box truck had returned to the property on Shady Lane and the residents confronted two of the suspects in their driveway. Sheriff’s Office Dispatchers then heard what they believed to be firearms being discharged over the phone line and the resident reported there was an exchange of gunfire between the residents and the suspects. The residents physically subdued two of the suspects until law enforcement arrived, while several other suspects fled the area.

Law Enforcement personnel arrived and detained 34-year-old Gary Casdell Fite from San Francisco, CA and 28-year-old Marcel Jamarie Earl Patterson from Richmond, CA. Fite and Patterson both had significant injuries to their faces, heads, and extremities which were reportedly caused by the residents prior to law enforcement arrival at the scene.

Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Detectives were summoned to the scene to assist with the investigation. Fite and Patterson were transported to Howard Memorial Hospital to be treated for injuries sustained during this incident. Fite was arrested for violations of 213 PC (robbery), 29800 PC (prohibited person in possession of a firearm), and 12022.53 PC (armed with a firearm during the commission of a felony). Fite was booked into the Mendocino County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Patterson was unable to be incarcerated due to the significance of his injuries and was subsequently airlifted to an out-of-county hospital for further medical treatment. Charges against Patterson are pending while he is hospitalized for his injuries.

At this stage of the investigation, law enforcement does not believe the suspects or victims were shot during the exchange of gunfire while law enforcement personnel were responding. This case is actively being investigated by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Anyone with information related to this investigation is encouraged to call the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center at 707-463-4086. Information can also be provided anonymously by utilizing the non-emergency tip-line at 707-234-2100.

Would the property owners have been in the wrong if they killed these robbers? If they had arrived with intent to rob and had guns on them? The laws become blurry when it’s a licensed cannabis farm it seems. What’s humbles take on this? Or trinitys?

“Licensed”, does it say the farm was legal? How many farms hold a license in Mendo?

Sheriff Honsal Said, if a living quarters is on the property of the grow you can arm your self against intruders. And I will add . Most likely they did not tell anyone where they were going to rob.

“Make my day.” It’s terrible that these citizens had to go through threats to their lives and homes, but at least the violent rip-offs got to reap a bit of what they sow. Be sure to tell your homies: “a country boy will survive.” So very sad that the perps sustained physical injuries in their assault. I may lose sleep tonight (titter, giggle) over their misfortune.

“Allegedly sustained injuries”. It works both ways. I think perhaps they were perhaps pummeled by a small sudden shower of mini asteroids that hit at that exact time and the original victims are blameless. Let’s see what the bottom feeding attorneys come up with.

Grow scene robberies almost seem like an act of nostalgia. Did Fite think it was still 2013, the year he got sent up for a <$4000 bank robbery?

IMO – justice was served. I am happy no one died. Hope other thieves will hear about this & decide to change their ways.

I am glad they got injured…

Well, if their injuries are not from the gunfire, the only conclusion I can make is that they surrendered, and were beaten.

Umm….I would make the opposite assumption. But it is only an assumption, not fact….That they were beaten into surrendering. Then hog-tied for everybody’s safety. Because that’s how it usually works….I cannot approve of beating anybody who has already surrendered and restrained- that’s not right even if you’re a cop

How did those fine Souls even know where to go in the first place? People y’all need to remember your connections and considerations. If it’s too good to be true it is. If they show up promising money and continued Partnerships understand this ain’t their first rodeo but it may be your last. Seller beware don’t invite strangers to your place. Glad no one died this time.

You’re right on all counts, Mama, almost certain it was an inside job. That said, remember Google Earth. If it’s the place I’m thinking, it’s cartel and huge. Visible from space. “Residents” can mean many things, mostly it means the people who are living there.

I’ve often wondered about the Privacy rights of Google Earth. There’s a certain amount of vertical space above your property that is considered yours for flight concerns I can’t remember what the elevation is that you can’t fly over propert y etc. Then you have a Google Earth. A few clicks people can zoom in and see what you’re doing on your porch. Occasionally which, people are caught doing nefarious things on Google Earth. Do not residents have a certain right to privacy for protection from theft and outside eyes? Rip offs looking at our stuff, to case it, plan robberies and or other bad behaving. Type in the address you will be there soon!!! Google Earth is a double edged sword.

These large cartel grows….I’ve been saying for years that Mendocino County Sheriff knows about them and does nothing. So Mendocino County Sheriff is responsible for any violence that comes from them. Meanwhile they’ll be off hassling somebody over 50 plants on their own land….There’s gotta be a payoff or an understanding going on and it’s dirty…

The term low-hanging fruit comes to mind. All of the freaks involved with the cartel business you can’t track them and if they get in trouble they just go back to where they came from so you’re not going to get any resolution on making them responsible for any of their bad actions. That being said many of the people are taking advantage of that live in the valley that have rights to land and other access that are promised money promise drugs promised all kinds of things. Some of it might come to fruition but for the most part it doesn’t and they wind up being disrespected and taking advantage of and getting nothing in the end. Been watching this going on for at least the last 10 years and it’s probably escalated the last five particularly taken advantage of the tribal elders. Maybe it would be a good thing for Round Valley tribes to consider watching their Elders better for elder abuse by younger people taking advantage. See it too much too often, and for far too long

Well, but I don’t know for sure if it was a big cartel grow or just mom-and-pops who are badasses. I am okay with either, people should be allowed to defend their property from armed scum. I’m keeping my ear to the rail. One thing, you come looking to rip off Round Valley, you better bring your lunch.

Those boys are lucky there was something left to airlift… I’m betting if the LEO hadn’t already been called, we never would have heard from those boys again. Specially in Covelo.

My poor old brains says: Goooooly isn’t easier to just maybe get some skills and get a job? Or you want to spend your life in prison? These dumbies haven’t got a clue the price of cannabis is in the toilet. Crime doesn’t pay, for long anyway. Don’t do drugs. No sympathy for these fools.

some people just take shortcuts in the quest to get money. that money usually gets wasted on dumb things. easy come easy go. money earned by legal means tends to last longer. most likely due to effort and responsibility.
