Semi-Truck ‘Stuck’ on the Wildcat Blocks Traffic

Semi stuck on the Wildcat. [Photo by James Brady]

A semi-truck pulling a large trailer tractor is struggling on a sharp curve of the Wildcat, south of Capetown. Though the incident began at approximately 8:27 p.m., the driver is still attempting to get out as of 10:15 p.m. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Traffic Incident Information Page, the semi driver from New York says he isn’t actually stuck but…um…he may have to back up and park overnight.

The tractor-trailer is digging into the asphalt and blocking the roadway, which prevents traffic from passing. The CHP report that a heavy-duty tow truck will possibly be needed.

Efforts to clear the road are ongoing, and vehicles are stuck behind the semi, according to the CHP page.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

You have to have a road to repair. I’m surprised to see the rig made it that far past Cape town.

Well, like said above, Google said he could.

Where does it say that? Someone wondered if Google was checked. Every year or so, somebody fails to check topography or road evaluations ahead of time. A young, bold driver perhaps.

It’s a paved two-lane road. The drop to Ocean House is said to be the steepest grade on a public road in the County. Windy, twisty; Trailers are not advised. As a geezer, It amazes me that professional drivers fail to research unknown routes in mountainous terrain. Young people, too. Everybody has a phone but why bother checking road conditions?

I passed that truck on 299 around 1:30 pm and is was going super slow. It had more of a load in back— whatever those things are they’re super heavy.

I’m amazed he made it that far. He must have been terrified going around the two off-camber sharp turns above Capetown. I certainly would be!

That road is buckled on that turn. Without big weed money the county cant fix anything but walking trails.

Looks like all that is needed is a torch to cut the low bumper off thats hung up due to the road configuration.

Materials for the bridge replacement at Honeydew ?

So far, I have to hand it to the driver.

He made it through the sharp corners coming from the north headed down into Capetown (and the deteriorated road). Now he is (or was) on the worst corner climbing out of Bear River Valley.

Better go through Panther Gap… even though that road ain’t easy.
There are no good roads to the ‘Lost Coast’… which makes it pretty special.

They may still be doing work on the beach stretch… But, The county’s road signage is all wacky. Their signs discourage using the Bull Creek road, which is the best option. As far as I know there is no warning from Ferndale. At the Honeydew, facing the bridge, coming down from WILDER RIDGE there is a sign warning trucks off of the Bull Creek road. Trucks that theoretically just came down Wilders dirt switchbacks? It gives drivers the wrong impression and they charge up the worst route and get stuck. For months after the State Park slide was repaired, Google maps didn’t route anything over Bull Creek.

Nope, the bridge is being replaced by a local company that know the roads better.

Sounds like it IS deliveries for the Honeydew Bridge. Now it’s stuck going up Shenanigan ridge. There’s another truck trying too perhaps. Next will be A.W. Way bridge…

That would have been better, but still sketchy. Hard to believe the intended recipient did not offer decent advice. Seems a bit negligent

If he’s able to continue, wait til he sees the plummet down to Ocean House. I hope that interstate rig has low gears and an exhaust brake.

Can’t believe they can’t get a rotater on scene that would take care of that problem quick .There’s nothing spilled or any hazmat involved.
