[UPDATE from the Humboldt CO Sheriff’s Department] Tragic End to Search for Missing Southern Humboldt Woman, Pamela Van Hoek

Lt. Kyle Holt of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to us that Pamela Van Hoek, who was reported missing yesterday, was found deceased in the area of the South Fork of the Eel River. He told us that family members have been notified of the somber outcome this afternoon.
The search for Ms. Van Hoek began in earnest yesterday morning. She had been last seen wandering on foot in the Redway area, known to be suffering from both diabetes and dementia, and without her essential medications. Some of the search efforts were concentrated around the Briceland Thorn Road at the west end of Redway, near Whitmore Grove and along the South Fork of the Eel River, where multiple search and rescue teams were deployed, including the Sheriff’s Department, the Coast Guard Helicopter, Redway Fire Department, and Southern Humboldt Technical Rescue.
The conditions during the night of her disappearance were harsh, with temperatures dropping into the 30’s and intermittent periods of rain, heightening worries about her ability to find shelter.
This morning an even more extensive search was launched, involving dogs, search teams for land and water, and a drone. The operation also included a Coast Guard helicopter scanning the South Fork of the Eel River and what reported to us as an airplane equipped with state-of-the-art infrared technology. The focus areas of the search were in the areas of Redway Beach, Whitmore Grove, and the Ravencliff areas, based on her last known location and possible directions of movement.
The discovery of Ms. Van Hoek’s body brings a tragic closure to the search operation. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department has not released further details about the circumstances of her discovery but has promised a press release later today.
Further information will be provided as it becomes available. Our hearts go out to the grieving friends and family during this difficult time.

No. I am so incredibly sorry. Thank you to all that helped find her. My condolences to her family and friends. ?
Oh no! I’m so sorry to everyone that loved her. What a sad outcome. My thoughts are with the family.
We appreciate the heartbreaking news update. So so sorry. Our hearts go out to the family especially, but this tragic loss also affects all the people involved with this search. Our community is so lucky to have such capable search and rescue teams, including the technical rescue team, as well as the Coasties and public safety. These amazing, capable and caring volunteers do so much. If you haven’t had a chance to donate before, now is a good time.
Southern Humboldt Technical Rescue Team is located at PO Box 458, Redway, CA 95560, or consider making a donation to your fire district team or volunteer fire department.
Did she drown?
Good question. We’re awaiting more updates from HCSO.
Many blessings to all involved, from.her family&friends to searchers&our local crew whom it appears recovered her to the folks reporting this.
It takes a serious emotional toll, especially being a first responder who knows the person.
May her loved ones find peace somewhere amongst the grief, and feel the love&support of their community.
You know we are all here for you if&when you need it.
RIP ?
Very sad
Tone Deaf Comment:
Good thing they had all those strong paddlers to get that coroner’s pickup unstuck. Not too bright, driving onto that river bar.
Cut them some slack… They all did an excellent job in difficult conditions…
They all have my utmost respect.
Now I just have to figure out how I am going to be able to continue to help to support them all…
Kym, too…
You could support Kym by donating to her site. You could donate to the local firefighters, search and rescue team, technical rescue team, all of whom played a big role in finding her. Kym has the list of all those folks.
The Real Guest does kindly donate.
Thanks, Kym…
But I don’t donate near enough…
And it’s been way too long…
Hopefully I will have an opportunity to be sending something else your way, to you and your family…
(We’ve got a few new tricks up our sleeves, that we’ve learned recently…)
It was very nice of you to acknowledge me…
You have been doing a more amazing job than usual, and the prompt reporting on the missing woman, and the unfortunate outcome, on your regular family day, was extraordinary.
Very impressive by you, and by everyone else involved…
We live on an amazing community.
I am humbled by it.
While you were typing the follow up story, I was out looking…
I was the only one, so I figured she must have already been found, one way or the other…
No place for your negativity.
They don’t think selfishly. They think about the situation at hand. Getting a truck stuck is nothing compared to what was in everyone’s mind at that exact moment.
Friday
LOL, shows what you know about first responders, they ain’t stuck until they say they are stuck. Wheels in the gravel is just another detail.
Sending sympathy to her loved ones, and comfort to the searchers, who always hope for a better outcome. Thank you all for doing your best, and bringing closure to her friends and family.
Very, very sad. My sympathy to her family.
So sad, reading this. Condolences to her family. Thank you to everyone who helped out
Having a body —however miraculous a work of machinery it is indeed— can become tremendously heavy to carry…
As for mortals, their days are
like grass:
they flourish like a flower
of the field;
for the wind passes over it,
and it is gone,
Welcome Home.
✨
My heart goes out to family & friends that loved her. I’m so sorry ? for your loss.
Thank you to everyone that helped find her. We live in a community with amazing people. I’m praying for our Myers Flat missing woman, and her family & friends.
One less unsolved mystery in the deep Humboldt woods- thanks to the hard work of all the search & rescue folks. This weather did not make it easy. My condolences to this family, I can’t even imagine how painful this must’ve been- I hope there’s a little relief in some closure. So heartbreaking.
Called from your bed at 2 in the morning to paddle on a swift river. These people deserve our undying respect. They found her, and yes it was tragic. But–they found her.
Her family let her just walk off?!
Anyone with a family member with dementia knows how difficult it can be to control someone with a mental capacity similar to a toddler and the physical capabilities of an adult. In many cases the elder may leave the home when the family member is asleep or distracted. If anyone has a good way to keep a GPS device/alert on someone with dementia, I’m sure that a description here could be helpful to many people including me.
Yes. You are right.
It would be nearly impossible to constantly keep someone with dementia contained.
It is too early for this.
However, at some level, it feels like some part of her may have been ready to pass.
She went off alone, as elders might have done long ago.
It sounds like she was in a place she loved, near the river.
I can tell from the coverage she was loved.
That is the important thing to retain.

Pam was a really kind woman who did a lot for the community. She was a wonderful mom and was greatly loved by her two sons. Much love to all ?
So terribly sorry for the loss of your loved one. Prayers to her friends and family.
A very sad ending that I was hoping would not happen. Condolences to Pamela’s family and friends. A HUGE thank you to all the first responders and others looking so hard to find her. I pray that Pamela may now RIP.
God rest Pam. We worked together at Community Cornerstone for some time. She was endlessly kind and patient and her humor carried the day many days.
I very sorry that you lost such a wonderful friend Mr. Ashenbrucker.
