Heavy Rainfall Impacts Local Roadways, Closing Hwy 254; Flood Advisory in Affect

storm graphic from nwsThe North Coast is feeling the impacts of another atmospheric river bringing high winds and heavy rainfall.

The local National Weather Service in Eureka issued a warning for area residents, “Moderate to heavy rain over the past several hours has contributed to widespread urban and small stream flooding along the coast. 1 to 2 inches of additional rainfall is expected early this afternoon, continuing the risk of flooding. Be extra cautious if traveling this afternoon.”

Roadways are already becoming impacted from the storm effects, leading to localized flooding.

Hwy 254, the Avenue of the Giants, is fully closed due to flooding from Holmes Flat Road, mile marker 41, to Barkdull Road, mile marker 44.

In Fortuna, CHP is reporting the 4000 block of Mill Street is flooding.

Southbound Hwy 1 from Ocean View Drive south to Omar Drive is closed in the Inglenook area. One-way controlled traffic is in place.

Caltrans encourages motorists to be prepared for inclement weather, to plan ahead, and to leave extra space to stop in wet conditions. Using your vehicle’s headlights allows your vehicle to be better seen in low visibility conditions. Above all, slow down and never drive through standing water.

As much as I’d like to go see how flooded Jolly Giant Creek is, the couch is much too comfy. And dry.

On a more pleasant note- I was very surprised that my power didn’t go out. Flickered a bit but hung in there. It usually goes out at the slightest wind. Maybe I’m talking too soon but I looked at the outage map and there were no large outages anywhere.
