[UPDATE 7:36 a.m.] Breaking News: Fatal Shooting Early Christmas Morning on Amtrak Train in Siskiyou County

A southbound Amtrak train, en route to Sacramento, became the site of a fatal (likely police-involved) shooting early Christmas morning near Mount Shasta in Siskiyou County, according to a witness, Atwood Carpenter, who is also a reader of this news site. The train, currently stopped with police tape cordoning it off, was the scene of a series of events that left passengers unsure of what is happening.

Carpenter, returning home after visiting his daughter in Eugene, recounted the events as he saw them early Christmas morning. Around 10:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve, a disturbance began with a man, described by Carpenter as appearing possibly homeless and exhibiting erratic behavior. Carpenter described the man as 6’2″ and gangly–“a down-on-his-luck homeless guy looking a little tired, talking to himself and doing wizardly things with his hands not threatening but menacing.” Carpenter said the man was “lean. I would say mid 20’s early 30’s. Not in touch with what was going on around him. He wasn’t right. I’m not sure how he even got on the train.”

The man, carrying his belongings in a garbage bag, was moving through the train, causing discomfort among the passengers with his gestures and agitated speech. Carpenter, who had his dog with him, felt uneasy as the man stood talking and waving his hands behind him.

“He was standing in the aisle behind my right shoulder,” Carpenter told us. “He was making everyone uncomfortable.” Eventually, Carpenter said, “I asked him if he was talking to me and he said, ‘No.'”

After a bit, the man moved on. Then not too long afterward, the train stopped and Carpenter thought it was because they were putting the man off the train.

But then about 12:25 a.m. p.m., Carpenter was looking at his computer when he heard “someone being tazed” at the end of the train car he was in.

He looked up and saw a Mount Shasta police officer and an Amtrak employee apparently trying to subdue the individual. “The worker and the guy were facing me,” Carpenter told us. The police officer was facing the individual and the Amtrak worker. “[The man] was giving the employee a good thrashing with his elbows,” Carpenter said.

Carpenter explained, “I figured there was a guy standing behind him and cop standing in front. I figured it was under control.” So he looked away. “Then I heard ‘Get down! Get down! Get down!'”

Police lights reflect off the Amtrak train after it stopped in Mount Shasta following the fatal shooting.

In rapid succession, Carpenter told us he heard 8 to 10 shots. He believes the shots were fired by the officer.

After the shooting, emergency efforts shifted to trying to save the man’s life. CPR was attempted first in the narrow aisle and then the man was moved outside where efforts continued. “They attempted CPR in the train for about 20 minutes…They worked on him for about 10-15 minutes outside,” Carpenter estimated.

But the man was pronounced deceased.

From the train window, passengers can see that law enforcement has taped off the train car.

From a train window, passengers can see that law enforcement has taped off the train car.

Carpenter expressed concern about the lack of sympathy from authorities and the emotional turmoil experienced by the passengers. “Nobody has actually told us what has happened.” He noted that the train, about two-thirds full, had around 30 people in the car at the time of the incident, many of whom seemed to be non-native English speakers. “There is a whole train full of people that are on the verge of trying to figure out if they are traumatized or not,” Carpenter told us.

We reached out to the Mount Shasta Police Department, but the woman we spoke to would not release any details. We reached out to Amtrak’s media line. An Amtrak representative told us, “The incident is currently under investigation. You may reach out to the California Department of Justice for further assistance.” We attempted to do so, but there didn’t appear to be a way of speaking to anyone until Tuesday.

Law enforcement vehicles flash blue and red lights near the yellow tarp that covers the deceased.

No other authorities have released an official statement, leaving passengers in a state of uncertainty. The passengers don’t know when the train will be moving again and many of them are witnesses to the death of a man and may be called to testify to what they saw.

This is a developing story, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

UPDATE 7:36 a.m.: The Mount Shasta Police Department posted this morning, “On December 25, 2023, an officer with the Mt Shasta Police Department was involved in an Officer Involved Shooting (OIS). The Attorney General’s Office will be taking over the investigation.”

Let’s guess, it’s the police’s fault again?
This story would have been better if normal riders of the train had subdued this loon, but no, we just have to sit here and let bums traipse around in public.
And then we claim WE are the traumatized ones when the police and first responders act in their capacity.
-Under my plan,
1. Public Services and financial benefits would be reserved for contributors and workers.
In this way society can reverse the incentives that have given equal status to non-contributors.
2. We have to have zero sympathy for those that are able but won’t help with the project of life.
If this ‘man’ was not able to be civil
Well then he shouldn’t enjoy the benefits of civilization.

Sad news for Christmas Day.
Very true about being a contributor in society and doing ones part to leave the younger a better place. Let’s find out what’s wrong with these who don’t fit the mold by conducting lobotomies like in the past.

Look up what a lobotomy was!
It isn’t a forensic examination of the brain(at all!). I’m not a neuroscientist, but, I’ll wager you a twenty that there are some mental imbalances that are biochemical…or just chemical, that would not be obvious by simply peering at a dead criminal’s brain.

Under most human plans people would never judge a book by its cover, and assume people like this have not done their share , we do not know this man or most of the unhoused stories , the fact that a very large percentage of which happen to be veterans , and i know you are not suggesting that veterans have not just by being one have not pulled their weight .

Wow, harsh punishment Canyon Oak (and anyone who agrees with him/her),
instant capital punishment for being annoying?
Sounds about right: Merry Christmas!
Here’s a more fun Amtrak story:
Sleeper Car
Taking the train across country is a singular joy and I strongly recommend a berth in the sleeper car. There’s that magic moment when you wake up in the middle of the night, the steel wheels rattling on the rails below your bed, and for half a second you can’t place it, you’re not sure where you are. In the morning you get up, walk down the hall for a shower, brew a strong cuppa coffee in your roomette, and then bring it upstairs with a relaxed smile on your face to watch the scenery flash by outside the big long windows.
Everyone in coach is sprawled out and exhausted, drooling mouths hanging open, legs splayed in awkward positions seeking comfort– another night in the cattle car trying to sleep in the seats.
Riding through Arizona I struck up a conversation with a college girl going home for the holidays and I soon found out that her mother had recently been in Paris with a group of her friends from school days twenty years before.
“One of the women takes my mom and her friends on a trip once a year to somewhere in the world, this year it was France,” she said.
“And she pays for the whole trip?” I said.
“Yup,” the girl said.
“Wow, I wonder who would do something like that?”
“It’s Meryl Streep,” she said.

Ah yes the lifestyles of the rich and famous! How wonderful!! Those idiot regulars who sleep in coach will never know what me and my kind experience…the joys of the finer things in this world. Those peons who litter the coach cars with their insignificant lives bother me much -until I remember we do need somebody to serve us, clean our many homes and scrub our many toilets. Merry Christmas I say! Bring on all the finest gifts for my special people!! No expense be spared! Jesus loves us rich and famous people!!

My train ride Eugene, OR to Syracuse, NY ~10 years ago was interrupted by being ‘side railed’ to allow westbound coal trains the main line, frieght apparently more important than passengers these days. Entertaining stops to allow smokers to indulge their habit. I slept on the floor of the observation car, not bothered by the conductor. The dining car was good and many conversations were had there and in the observation car.

Great plan. If only we would have let Hitler and the Nazis follow thorough with their plan instead of stopping them in WWII we would not have this problem.
Dont get me wrong I am not left leaning person but this was obviously a mental health issue and I bet he was armed with a knife or other weapon so the police were forced to shoot.

The underlying problem here is lack of places to put these mentally ill people that can not take care of themselves and can turn dangerous in a moment. Ever seen someone killed? It is not a pretty sight and being trapped on a train with no escape can not be fun. As for the passengers, stupid to try and be a hero because that can get you killed. He was bizarre acting not threatening anyone so no need to engage in a fight until he becomes a threat. That would be just straight up stupid and illegal. No call the cops and let them take care of it like they did.

wow- So- someone is mentally ill, and YOUR best thought is ‘he doesn’t deserve to enjoy civilization’? That’s a very sweet Christmasy notion- I bet you consider yourself a good, American Christian. I’m ashamed of the human race- How on earth does it take ten bullets to stop one man from causing a commotion on a train? – I hope this trigger happy cop feels really brave today.🙄- Seriously? The man was obviously causing problems, he needed assistance- in the worst possible way. He did not deserve to be sentenced and put to death by some low level public servant. I’m so tired of ‘cop mentality’.

Newly homeless and homeless are dealing with aberrant behavior daily.

Last time I took the train across country, early 90s, two guys who kinda looked like football players, casual cool guy dressed, were walking through the train after we pulled into Kansas City, MO, went straight to the juveniles; my sister, and another stranger-teenager, and started demanding to search our bags. DEA?.. started crawling around on all fours under our seats…my sister told them to fuck off, they pressured the other teen to open up her shit… Nada. So IDK.. don’t miss true Government Overreach, for a weird fantasy!

Don’t pigeon hole yourself. Democrat POLITICIANS aren’t fixing the average person’s economic problems..at their peril. But I’d maintain it’s because most of them are breathing the same rare air as Republican POLITICIANS are. Most Americans would benefit from a progressive income tax system, run off voting, and the restriction of administrative bureaucracies’ ability to fee and fine without actually doing anything towards their missions.
Public transportation like Amtrak is an example. Subsidize it where it’s as convenient and cheap as driving; if it’s good for society, spend on it.
Elizabeth Warren is worth 68 mil. I don’t agree with Chris Christy on a lot, but he’s the only Republican running who has a chance of snagging Dem voters. The rest of em are running to be Trump’s Vice President. Trump will just pick some unknown ghoul in any case!

Agree wholeheartedly with the commenters below, especially, Canyon oak. So true, we have let believe this is the new normal, it isn’t!

Absolutely, if you are giving someone something (money, bed, food, etc.) then there has to be a return to the system, it could be picking up trash, painting park benches or curbs, but it has to be something back to the system (municipality, government).

Second point just as important, if they are not going to be part of civil society/life, then needs to be put into a facility, but no sympathy with repeated attempts to assist these individuals. We simply cant afford it with all the illegals coming across the border daily.

The southern border has been breaking records that go back 10 years or more on the daily crossings, and scarier is that up to 200 of the 11,000 have been on the Terror Watch List. Think about the ones that have not been captured.

Wake the f&*%k up people! We are losing!

Ok well lets just start, caging them huh ? Including those worthless retirees drawing social security right ? I mean they are no longer contributing, and demanding this demanding that , or maybe we should just decide that if someone is no longer of working age life extending medications and procedures will no longer be offered ? And lets not forget about those born without the ability to function on their own we should just put them down right away i mean it all saves money right ? While we are at it we should be outlawing pets as well talk about a drain on the planet and just think all of those veterinarians can get jobs tending to those about to die since we are not going to attempt to extend their lives once they reach 65 right ? Your rights to decide how you live your life is yours and theirs is theirs and laws can be passed so that we can all get along but your right to input into this system ends when you start thinking and acting like your rights are more valuable or more important than other peoples . Live your life on your terms and allow others to do the same but all of your judgements just goes to show how mentally unwell and how selfish you truly are no matter how well your attempts to hid them are wasnt it all you boomers that were preaching drop out back in the 60s ? And now you are scared to death that the following generations will take your past advice and drop out because then there will not be any more paying into the system you boomers built and allowed to be abused to the point that 7 generations after you are in the ground will still have their grandchildren paying for the debts your generation insisted upon

Now the U.S. is paying for transgender inmates and illegals to have gender reassignment surgery too. Oh and we the taxpayers are also paying for the illegal immigrants to have full medical benefits. Way to go U.S., you punish your own people if they make over a certain dollar amount you take away their health care but you step right up and offer to pay for incarcerated people and illegal immigrants who are gender confused to change their genitals at the taxpayers expense! It is kinda funny though because they are taxpayers too just like the rest of us so therefore they are also paying for that bill. The world keeps getting more consumed by greed, deceitfulness, violence, corruption every second. Those predictions about the end of days in the Bible seem to be coming true. It may be coming sooner than we think.

I don’t like how the cops are trained to perform CPR on somebody who just got shot.

You’re literally pushing the blood out of their body, you need to plug the holes like they do in the military.

I mean, are police have been militarized to look, act, and preform like soldiers at this point already, why haven’t they been trained in their medical services as well?

You’ve been shot multiple times with a high power gun? Police guns are not like BB guns or 22s. 1 shot is meant to be fatal. They always shoot to kill. It’s how they are trained. These were most likely chest/ head and or abdominal wounds. You usually can’t come back from those types of gunshots.. the bullets cause extreme damage

Hollow points are for energy transfer to the target (knock down power) a rifle bullet (mostly) travels over 2200 fps that’s what opens a very large temporary wound channel and shreds insides. Pistols suck at killing people quickly that’s why hollow points are used and why law enforcement shoots so many times.

We fetishize guns, and CPR.
Neither one is really appropriate ALL of the time. At least not as much as we use either one.

Missed my point. I’ve performed CPR for probably six hours combined, so far. Of course it’s never successful. It’s terrible for me and the team. I’ve just noticed people’s unrealistic expectations. So just pointing out how we delude ourselves into nonsense policies. Shoot. Perform CPR.
There is an alternate reality where the crazy bum gets rushed off the train, and back on his way, maybe after a night in the clink. Not as hard on everybody involved.
Remember the term “blanket party”? How about a tactical blanket or net? Drag net anyone?

The aggressor was attacking- trying to kill, the conductor, who also got shot. If someone is on strong drugs, like PCP, 2 shots won’t stop them.

This hits very close to my heart.. Amtrak does not protect their employees and passengers at all! Amtrak claims they have undercover security onboard but this further states otherwise! My daughter travels to Santa Barbara for college and this is unacceptable! Amtrak needs stricter rules and regulations! I pray this gets the attention it needs so things will be changed! 😢💔🙏🏼

Unfortunately, on a train, like an airplane, there are not many options to try to “run away” and NONE of them are good, for anyone. Please stay off planes if you are not sure you might want to deboard fast.

None of what you said has anything to do with what I’m stating! Being an ex-employee of Amtrak I’m stating facts that they do not check all ID’s mandatory, they allow anyone to travel as long as they pay no matter their state of mind, no security to protect onboard crew members or passengers from any type of crime on board. Amtrak also just received funding! Funding for what?!?! Safety should be #1 protocol! Periodt! 💯💯💯

2 of my family members work there. They can’t retain Amtrak police. They are so short handed and the shorter handed they are the more cops quit because they’re so unsupported. And there are no turn styles or barriers to keep anyone off of a train. They check tickets AFTER people get on, while the train is moving.

I like your logical approach to this serious problem. These passenger cars can be sealed off from the others. I suggest next time this happens the conductor evacuates the problem car and locks the doors shut. And deals with the perpetrator at the next convenient stop.

No security on the train? In this day and age of nuts, you would think there would be some kind of protection, like sky marshals on planes. Given the broad range of people traveling, this might be a good idea. By the way, no one is forced to travel, so complaining about conditions in coach is silly. Everyone has gotten where they are by their own choices, and need to live the life they have made. Enabling bad conduct only prolongs the pain.

Why wasn’t a Mental Health expert called in. The guy was by witnesses mentally dysfunctional. A Crisis worker could have most likely controlled the guy. But the police do not have a protocol to first call in a mental health crisis expert. I have personally seen this work. People are so quick to wander off the tracks and blame drugs or people coming across the border. The police and some commenters on this web site like to shoot from the hip. Reminds me of Fascist Spain where mental citizens were terminated because of their mental Illnesses. There are undocumented stories of this event happening in Cuba in the 1960’s. Before you shoot you mouth off you should at least wait until the facts come out.

Because NOONE has a MENTAL HEALTH UNIT that comes in first before a scene has been cleared by law enforcement. In a perfect and hopefully coming program, there will be ways to identify a criminal from a mental health call. Too often there is a combo of both. A local program that participates would allow their name to be shared with Law Enforcement and this is their councilor, call them out and HOLD til the councilor gets there. There is NO 5 MINUTE RULE to CLEAR THE CALL. Officers can’t wait? Put him in the closest holding cell or in ER if he’s not violent to others… come on.. S. Oregon has an office that works with Law Enforcement. I need to try to find out more about this. My son’s life was RUINED because of no cooperation between Law and Mental Health. YOU’ll probblly be paying for him to live at Napa State Hospital for the rest of his life. It’s sweet… but he’s 23. No normal life.

probably necessary, the guy was attacking the conductor, got tazed, which assistant didn’t phase him, and slamming someone with your Elbow can kill them. That’s why they teach it in self defense! Anyway he was attacking the conductor when the cop shot, cuz the conductor also got shot and walked to the ambulance.
And the train car is a crime scene where someone died so it must be held for inspection until the coroner and the cops release it.
And his luck getting a mental health consent to come to a train, usually y you can’t even get the cops to come because the regular “on the ground” crime is so bad these days they’re just too busy and there aren’t enough Amtrak Police. Serially Amtrak is ALWAYS HIRING AMTRAK POLICE! If you’re a qualified police officer and want to ride the trains, go apply.

So, I dunno the why’s and what’s regarding fault and blame and all that. But as someone who witnessed the whole thing from start to finish, what struk me dumb was the bulk LEO traffic before, during and after CPR. Every Buddy, Chad, and Braydon on shift in county and 2 or 3 surrounding must’ve come through. CHP, Shasta Lake, PD, and Sheriffs and Deputy’s from at least 3 counties. Must’ve been at least 2 or 3 dozen people through there by the time they took him outside, where he ultimately succumbed to his perferating, and lay for well over 6 hours, ten toes high for the whole of the car who watched him get shot to see. I’m not big on process and laws and the like, but it doesn’t take a genius to understand decorum and respect. At the very least, a tragedy occurred here, at the worst a man lost his life needlessly. Either way, a grip of people who I am sure didn’t order the upcharge for, witnessed another lose their life, in EXTREMELY close quarters. And to add insult upon insult to their injury, they were made to sit in that car, with that dude out on the road for everyone, of every age to see. For 7 hours, so that they could secure the crime scene/evidence., which entailed of separating the car from the rest of the train, putting the train back together, keeping car still, then moving train, it was far too little, way too late on that front Half the chaw-dipping county had been through there and spread their own special sauce on the scene, so other than further exposure of the public to this unmitigated shit show, what purpose was served by not just letting the train move forward rather than remain stationary. It had to move to get rid of the car, why not keep moving towards a quicker solution, rather than sit and wait for the easiest. I shouldn’t be too hard on them.i mean, they’re not party planners. They can’t be expected to solve syuff. Or work things out. I bet if impressions were made on that carpet, you’d get everything from Sasquatch to Mickey Rooney, and they’d all be accurate. It’s like watching a monkey F a football, but forgets to F the football, then feels bad for not F’ing the football, so he just let’s the football F him. I saw 30+ Police folks. I saw 5 or 6 who looked as if they were doing something other than standing in circles and amusing themselves at the situation. In front of the trainfiul that just witnessed it

Imagine your are a Coroner. It’s Christmas, and you are at home with family. You’ve had some egg nog. Then the phone rings: A man is dead on the train over in Mount Shasta. Which is weird, because the train doesn’t stop there, because the Amtrak depot is down in Dunsmuir. You drink some coffee, and carefully drive the snow-edged roads from your home to the scene. Your first act is to try to ID the body, but there’s blood all over the place. You have to sort through the blood-spattered hefty bags that were the dead man’s only possessions. You have to document everything he owned, and work all night trying to determine who he was and who his next of kin might be. Finally, you summon the assistance of bystanding cops to load up the corpse, and remove it to the Coroner’s refrigerated coffins over in Yreka. How many hours do you think this all takes an experienced professional?

They had to wait for the coronet and law enforcer to release the train and they probably had to wait for a new crew because the conductor was injured and also because if the crew waits til long they go past their hours of service and have to find a me crew and get the new crew driven to the site, inspect the train, go over all of the paperwork needed to take over a train, etc. There are a lot of FRA regulations that need to be followed.

In 2004, California passed a tax on millionaires to fund more mental health spending under Proposition 63/ Mental Health Services Act. Over the last nearly 20 or so, has California’s mental health gotten better, or worse? This incident should remind us all that the government as it is currently constituted is just a giant waster of money, with the “bullet train” from noplace to nowhere as the single worst example. But in terms of Lunatics roaming our streets and attacking citizens, things are completely out of hand. The leftist “blame the police first” and “hug a thug” crowd “assisted outpatient therapy” NAMI groups have only added to all this ineptitude. No we have a dead hobo, a traumatized cop, and an entire train-full of illegal immigrants as horrified witnesses to this latest failure. Merry Christmas.

Not just “acting weird” what the argyle doesn’t say is he attacked the conductor and didn’t stop after he was tazed. Most conductors don’t just throw people off because they’re “weird”. But if he didn’t have a ticket, was distressing or being combative to passengers, smoking, using drugs or excessively drinking on the train, he had cause to eject him from the train.

“There is a whole train full of people that are on the verge of trying to figure out if they are traumatized or not,”

This is the problem with society today. Should I be traumatized?. Of course people should be, some more than others but they should also have empathy for the ill man who was shot.

People have no self thought values anymore. It’s all about what will others think of what I am?

Calls out for a better method of physical control. I’m reminded of the netting used by gladiators in the Roman days. Absent the facts, I fail to understand how or why there were 8 to 10 shots reported. A tragedy all around!

I would think with all the training the police get there would be a better way to restrain an unarmed individual than shoot them 8-10 times. What about getting them on the ground with batons or bean bag rounds and then use ropes, zip ties, or hand cuffs? And does it really require that many shots? Certainly if they can fire real guns inside the train, there must have been some similar form of non-lethal weapon?

they TAZED THE GUY… and he CONTINUED to ATTACK the conductor. He was probably high on PCP or something. And I don’t think most cops carry around bean bag guns. And I’m sure if he COULD have pulled him off and cuffed him he would have, but they struggled & apparently the guy was really strong and resistant to taking. The conductor went to the hospital.
It’s sad that the guy was so out of control that taxing didn’t stop him.
Not a good day for anyone.

Why does everyone consider it a fact that he was attacking the conductor? From the info given, it sounds like he was acting the way so many others we see wandering the streets in a tattered state and having some kinda internal battle with themselves or an imaginary adversary act. And guess what? That particular type of person, although uncomfortable to be near, are generally pretty harmless. And given that the person who was on the train asked him directly if he was speaking to him, and the response was a simple no, without any hostility leads me to believe that he was more than likely harmless. So my guess is that the conductor is probably the instigator. He is the person who made the call to stop the train to remove the guy, and then when the sheriff arrived, what was he doing wrestling with the man?

Who called the police on the deceased individual? Someone must have alerted the driver of the train for them to stop so police could intervene. How many bullets does it take to disable a person so they aren’t a threat to anyone else or their selves? The officer is supposed to be trained on how to deal with these kinds of situations so that they don’t have to kill anyone. It sounds like this officer was just trigger happy and wanted to play God and take the individuals life, the officer could have shot him one time in a place on his body that wouldn’t result in death but would make sure he was no threat to anyone but instead he shot the man 8-10 times at close range. A bit excessive don’t you agree? If the deceased individual was mentally ill or they were using recreational drugs or both their behavior is unpredictable and they have unstable emotions and reactions and some can be very dangerous especially if they feel threatened. A person who uses recreational drugs who is also mentally ill could have super human strength and it would take more than just one person to get control of the situation and the individual. It is NOT the passenger’s job to take control of this situation it would be the conductor, the driver and the police. Put yourself in the passenger’s place for a moment, imagine you were on that train in that train car that the man was killed in. Now imagine that you notice someone who is acting strangely and having conversations with people that are not there and they are right behind you when they start throwing their arms around. What would you do in this situation? You do not know if this person has weapons on them or what they may do. You feel uneasy by this individual’s actions and behavior but don’t want to put yourself or anyone else in danger so you just try to ignore it and hope that this person will stop. Then you hear something going on at the front of the car you are riding in and notice police with the person who was acting strangely so you think everything will be ok because the police have it ” under control”. Then you hear 8-10 gun shots one right after another and you see the officer or someone doing something to that person who is now laying lifeless at the front of the train car you are riding in. Then nobody will tell you what’s going on so you’re now stranded at this train station with no knowledge of when the train will be cleared to leave to its next destination. To blame the passenger for not “taking action” in this situation is absolutely wrong! If you were in that situation I’m sure you would not have done anything to “control the situation.” It is NOT the passenger’s duty, it is the train conductor’s responsibility to ensure the safety of all of its passengers.I would like to know who called the police and was the train stopped at the train station already when the police came on board? This is a very unfortunate and sad thing that happened because whether that person was mentally ill, on drugs, homeless or whatever they were someone’s son, brother, nephew or grandson. They were someone’s family member and regardless of their situation they are human just like anyone else and deserve to be treated as such. Unfortunately, people are judgemental and opinionated about those who have less than they do or are mentally ill and those people are outcasts because society makes us believe that if
Someone’s life circumstances don’t fit into their description of how people have to be to be accepted by society then their lives are not important. That is a selfish and ignorant belief system. These people need help that they aren’t receiving because the money that should be going towards mental health services is being spent on things like brand new court houses and police stations instead. I feel very bad for the deceased person’s family because they got the worst call a person could ever receive on Christmas Day. As for the police officer I believe they should have consequences for the excessive shots fired on a person who was already immobilized by tasers just like any other person would have. Killing a person should be a last resort option and one shot could have killed the guy but this officer unloaded his firearm on a restrained individual at close range 8-10 times. There’s no excuse for that!

Eight to ten shots fired, and two went toward wounding an Amtrak employee. How about the idea of one bullet, at most, to his dominant arm, in order to stop the poor mentally ill man? Who allowed that moron to have a gun? This is more evidence that law enforcement attracts psychopaths.

Hello Atwood Carpenter, I am Nicholas’ sister, my uncle has been trying to locate you to find out more about what happened during this incident when we lost Nicholas. Nicholas was never a known drug user- I have been through his home, he just turned 32-years-old and wanted to get back into roofing or go into firefighting as he had forestry experience. Nicholas’ adult life just started and he was not homeless either, which I don’t understand these comments that homeless or using a substance means that you should be slaughtered. Nicholas had a sister, a niece, a mother, aunts and uncles… he was a human being. Mr. Atwood if you receive this please respond if you are able to due to the investigation as my uncle wants to know what happened to our Nicholas.
