Since Jan. 10, 2018, when the lighthouse was moved from its bluff location at Edwards at Trinity streets to the harbor at the base of Lighthouse Road, the Trinidad Civic Club and the Cher-Ae Heights Indian Community of the Trinidad Rancheria have been working on design, engineering and permits to permanently place the iconic structure.

Friday, North Coast Fabricators lifted the lighthouse to its permanent spot.

There was a little drama, as the first crane operator became ill early in the morning and a second expert operator was called to assist.

Trinity Valley Consulting Engineers, GRS Inc. contractors, the Trinidad Rancheria and Trinidad Civic Club, together with generous community donors, have brought the project to fruition.

There is more to do. Graceful steps, benches, a historic Humboldt Bay anchor and placement of the 1898 Fog Bell all will occur.

However, the Memorial Lighthouse is at rest. The Lost at Sea granite plaque on the side of the lighthouse, looks out to sea to the west, a fitting placement honoring those who have lost their lives at sea in an area where the maritime history of Trinidad will be commemorated for all time.

Big shout out to Garth Sundberg for doing a lot of the work himself to get the foundation ready… Many thanks to the Trinidad Rancheria for working with the Trinidad Civic Club to provide a new and appropriate home for the Memorial lighthouse enjoyed by so many.
