Just before noon today, November 28, emergency dispatch received a report of two armed subjects on the grounds of McKinleyville High School campus on Murray Road. Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies responded with lights and sirens to the perceived threat.

Officers arrived on scene, clearing and securing the school buildings and campus. During their search of the campus, dispatch personnel contacted the school. Subsequent investigation, scanner traffic indicated a person with a firearm holstered to his side was witnessed walking past the school on Murray Road.

Parents were notified of the issue stating that the school was on lockdown due to a suspicious person off-campus.

In addition to the lockdown at McKinleyville High School, Morris school was sheltering in place while the McKinleyville Middle School and Dow’s Prairie school were notified and prepared in case the threat was substantiated.

UPDATE 2 p.m.: New Press release from HCSO:

On 11/28/2023, at about 11:25 a.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the area of McKinleyville High School for the report of male subject, possibly armed with holstered handgun on his waist, entering the high school campus.

As HCSO deputies responded to the area, McKinleyville High School administration was contacted to be advised of the report. Both McKinleyville High School and neighboring Morris Elementary School campuses were placed on lockdown by school administrators as a precaution. Deputies, with assistance of officers from the California Highway Patrol, California State Parks, and Blue Lake Tribal Police began checking the area as contact was made with school officials.

As campuses were being cleared by law enforcement, additional information was received that indicated the possibly armed subject had been witnessed near the intersection of Hwy. 101 and Murray Road and had not been observed entering the high school campus as the initial report was believed to indicate.

After a thorough check of the area and campus, law enforcement was unable to locate the suspicious subject or identify any threat to the students, staff, or neighboring area.

The HCSO would like to thank the allied law enforcement agencies that responded to assist as well as the administration of both schools for their quick response in working to ensure the safety of their students and staff.

Anyone with information about this case or related criminal activity is encouraged to call the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at (707) 445-7251 or the Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip line at (707) 268-2539.

False alarm?

I did find out this though.
“ Openly carrying loaded or unloaded firearms in public is generally prohibited in California. However, the sheriff of any county with a population under 200,000 people, or the chief of police of a city within that county, may issue licenses to carry a loaded, exposed handgun.”

a county of 134,000 has 94 pages of active warrants. the problem with the location of this school is that tweaks living on the beach pass it every day going to town. there is a guy that violates sex offenses almost every week with his pants at his knees with no underwear but he probably doesn’t even know it.

The general degradation, and exposure to violence the community gets to experience when we don’t arrest criminals and put them in jail or prison.

Yup. California was an open carry state until round 2 of Moonbeam Brown. The consequences of demonizing a particular tool has created a gun shy (figuratively and literally) population, innocent people shot by police and harassment over people exercising their natural right to be armed as they see fit.

You sure don’t know much about this subject do you?
Otherwise you would know it was Ronald Reagan that took those rights away

Nope. That the Mulford act which limited where you could carry. And implemented permits because of scary Black Panthers.

Certainly an infringement.

I’d place the blame more upon the roughly 1,000 people who use guns to murder people every year in this state.
If something is causing more harm than good, it only makes sense to place limits upon it.

Isn’t that why you have to have registration and proof of insurance when operating one? Maybe it should be the same for owning a gun?

What part of taking away the rights of others to defend themselves gets you so aroused? You know you’re advocating disarming women and people of color, right?

Considering no threat was found, this appears to be another false alarm raised by a gun shy population. A half a billion small arms in the USA and the preponderance of them cause no harm.

Since there have been literally hundreds of school shootings nationally, I would label this incident as, ‘gun shy’. Rather I’d put it in the reasonable precautions category. Kudos for the rapid LE response

Check your stats and do some math.

Schools are incredibly safe.

I’m on your side, but it was very poor judgement to carry a gun or replica past the school.

We were allowed to bring our guns to school up until 2004. I remember the principal apologizing to us, and saying that unfortunately some guys in trenchcoats ruined it for all of us. A good number of the trucks had rifles hanging in the back windows in the fall. It wasn’t uncommon for guys to show up to school late with blood on their pants and have a dead deer, or elk in the back of the truck.

In the late 60’s. if you didn’t have a full gunrack in your truck, parked at the school lot, then you were nobody.

You don’t think this hombre might be a little behind on current events, considering his choice of waist fashion? I mean, he’s got a side arm, but no BMX bike?

Sounds like an important run through. Bless our law enforcement for their excellent response and staff and students for maturely dealing with a potentially real life experience.
