Cal Fire Lifts Humboldt County Burn Permit Suspension

Press release from Cal Fire:Cal Fire Humboldt County headquarters sign

With recent rainfall events and cooler weather, the current suspension of CAL FIRE Burn Permits was lifted at 6:00 AM, Monday, October 9th, 2023. While there remains a threat of wildfires, current weather and vegetation conditions are conducive to safely utilize burning to reduce vegetation and create greater resilience to wildfires within communities and rural areas. CAL FIRE facilities will continue to be fully staffed until sufficient rainfall is received, allowing for the gradual reduction of fire control resources, while also prioritizing the ongoing efforts of fuel reduction initiatives. A Burn Suspension may be re-engaged in the event adverse fire weather conditions return. CAL FIRE Burn Permits may be obtained on-line at BURN PERMITS (ca.gov)

CAL FIRE burn permits will be required until hazardous fire conditions have abated. This applies only to those in State Responsibility Areas. Property owners are asked to use caution while conducting their burns, follow all guidelines provided, and maintain control of the fire at all times. Individuals can be held civilly and/or criminally liable for allowing a fire to escape their control and/or burn onto neighboring property, or for burning without or in violation of permits.

North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District (AQMD) burn permits are required year-round. To obtain an AQMD permit, call (707) 443-3093.

Pile Burning Requirements
Must have a valid AQMD permit prior to burning and only burn on permissive burn days.
Must have a valid CAL FIRE burn permit until such requirement is lifted.
Only burn dry, natural vegetative material such as leaves, needles, and tree trimmings.
The burning of trash, painted wood, dimensional lumber, or other debris is not allowed.
Do NOT burn on windy days.
Piles should be no larger than what is allowed by permit. You can add to pile as it burns down.
Clear a 10-foot diameter area down to bare soil around your piles.
Have a shovel and a water source nearby.
An adult must always remain in attendance of the fire.

Safe burning of vegetation by landowners is a crucial tool in reducing fire hazards. State, federal, and local land management and fire agencies will also be utilizing this same window of opportunity to conduct prescribed burns aimed at improving forest health and resiliency on private and public lands.

I think lifting the burn suspension at this time is just too soon. I am not burning anything until it starts raining.
