[UPDATE: CHP Attempts to Locate Driver] Car Crashes Over Embankment on Alderpoint Road and Bursts into Flames

Vehicle fire featureResidents of Garberville were alerted to a vehicle accident on Alderpoint Road near Quarry Road, just east of town by the sounds of sirens and then a column of black smoke rose above the hills. According to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page, a vehicle crashed off the road, plunging down an embankment, and then bursting into flames at approximately 6:57 p.m.

A passerby attempted to quell the flames with a fire extinguisher, but the fire rapidly consumed the vehicle, eventually spreading to the nearby vegetation.

Law enforcement and emergency services responded to the scene where the lone occupant of the vehicle, a male, managed to escape the wreckage before it was engulfed in flames.

As of 7:12 p.m., Cal Fire and local fire departments have controlled the blaze.

According to the CHP Traffic Incident Information page, officers on scene were attempting to locate the driver and any possible occupants of the vehicle. “There are no occupants in or around the scene,” Dunn reported.

Engines from Cal Fire Garberville were on scene as well as a requested water tender from the Garberville Fire Protection District, and officers from CHP Garberville.

The collision, and subsequent fire, remain under investigation.

It appeared to be a smaller sedan, Honda Civic-esque. Due to the damage from the fire, I could not ascertain the color of the vehicle prior to the fire.

Were they trying to hide something? Or was it really an accident? Nobody around to answer questions makes me think it wasn’t the latter question.

My guess.
Trimmigrant… harvest season ended… probably wanted on a warrant… stolen car… set it on fire… and pushed over the edge. Usually happens this time of year.

I hope the driver is OK.
People in wrecks are often injured and/or disoriented and can get in terrible trouble if they don’t get help quickly.
