A raging structure fire broke out near the Top of the World Gate on Fickle Hill, north of Kneeland and southeast of Arcata tonight. The blaze was reported approximately 10 minutes before 10 p.m. The incident has led to a complete traffic snarl on Fickle Hill Road, prompting the Incident Commander to request assistance from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) for traffic control. [Note: we learned later that the road was completely closed at about 3000 Fickle Hill Road for some time.]

The Incident Command reported over the scanner that the fire originated at a large residence and flames were engulfing the large home. Though the fire hasn’t spread to the wildland, according to the Incident Commander, he is concerned it could. He called it a “significant threat.”

He also reported that power lines are down creating a life safety hazard. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has been requested to respond.

By 10:20 p.m., the first Arcata Fire engine ran out of water. Fortunately, other resources are there already.

Thanks to the scanner folks at Lost Coast Outpost for helping fill in several details. Awesome work!

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

UPDATE 10:54 p.m.: The ALERTCalifornia link shows the fire has shrunk considerably.

UPDATE 11:20 p.m.: According to the Incident Commander speaking to dispatch, PG&E has secured the power lines. The fire is now contained and mop up is happening. He added that any extension into the wildland was minimal to not at all.

UPDATE 12:05 a.m.: Red Cross assistance was requested for the occupants of the residence.

I’m asking a question, not making assumptions.

Article is short on specifics.

But the implication is pretty blatant.

Maybe don’t read into my words your own opinion or assume implications.

I’m wondering it it was a butane hash lab explosion? Yeah! Or maybe aliens?

Sounds like it was the fire that caused most the damage not PG&E.

It was not PGE.

Hope the fire was contained

There are some very large buildings on Fickle Hill. Rich people houses. There was also a TNT fireworks business somewhere near the Lazy L Horse Ranch. I think it closed a few years ago. Lots of trees hiding structures.

It does not really matter if you are rich or poor when your home burns flat. I hope you will never have to find out what it is like if your home burns to the ground. Try a little kindness and you will receive some in return.

Yeah it does matter. Have you priced fire insurance?

Yes, and thank God, we can afford it. It should be a price that everyone with a home in the hills can afford.

So very sorry for the folks that lost their home in the fire, and that everyone including pets in the house got out without any injuries. Thank you to all the first responders for putting the house out and keeping the fire from spreading into the land. A special thanks to the Red Cross who are always there in time of need.

The house was at the 7000 block of Fickle Hill. Everyone got out safely but the house is a total loss. I was with them last night while the firefighters were putting it out. I’m their neighbor.

Thanks for being there and helping out your neighbors. A friend who lives very close by had no idea, heard no sounds until he saw it here on RHBB around 11 PM. We all hoped it was one of Arrogant Bob’s grow houses (just his house, no people or pets) not one of the good folks’ homes up there. I’m so sorry for your neighbors. So glad they are physically okay.

A good reminder to me to clear the brush that has grown to obscure my house’s hydrant attached to my water tanks. Fighting a fire without water access is just a meeting.

The son of the owners of the home posted a GoFundMe to help his parents. https://gofund.me/edaf8b9c
