Mal Coombs Park, Shelter CovePlease join us in honoring the life of an extraordinary man, Tom was an angel among us as he walked this earth and it was a pleasure to be part of his life. He was a kind man, with a heart of gold, a wise man with more knowledge than most, he was an artist, a craftsman, a fisherman and cowboy, a lover of animals, nature and his home, his beloved, Shelter Cove but most importantly he was a Son, a Brother, a Cousin, an Uncle, a Father, a Grandfather and a wonderful Friend. Tom’s time on this earth was cut too short but the love and knowledge he shared will never be forgotten.

What a good friend and classmate k-12, Class of ’75 SFHS, we both loved horseshoes, woodshop, mechanical drawing, fishing, tying flies, made our own fly rods, backpacking and fly fishing in the Marble Mountains with Mr. King, Twice a year Tom, and a group of other friends would backpack from the mouth of the Mattole down to Shelter Cover or vice versa and take our time. In wood shop, Tom made a pair of Big Foot feet, strap them to his boots and every day along the way he would put them on and walk around the beach hoping someone would find them after we moved on. We made boogie boards and used them down in the cove, along with body surfing. Allot of great memories with Tom. My heart filled sympathy to the whole Machi Family.
I didn’t know Tom, but what a wonderful eulogy you wrote for your friend. God Bless You

Ed, this is Tom’s Daughter, Lisa. Thank you so much for sharing your memories and stories of my Dad, the photos too. They mean the world to me. I hope you can make it to his celebration of life. Thanks again Ed.
Your Dad was awesome, I leaned so much from him growing up. When his sisters were not home (Sara & Betty), we would play all of their records and remember the Beatles, Herman’s Hermits, The Monkeys and Paul Revere and the Raiders were his favorite.
Another great story about your Dad, we were backpacking in the Marble Mountains, we had come upon a big pile of steaming bear poop on the trail one morning, so we were all on the lookout. That night we all sleep under a big tap, because it was foggy in the morning. But we were all woke up early with Tom screaming, he through that bear was eating his head, but it was just a deer licking his hair that was sticking out from under the tarp.
Here is another pic from Tom’s 10th Birthday:
Oh my goodness!!! I’ve never heard any of these stories!! Thank you for the laugh Ed! What great memories and I do appreciate you sharing. He was my whole world and I miss him everyday. There will never be another like him. Thanks again for sharing your memories of him.
On Tom’s 10th Birthday Party, with me, Jeff Fox, Kirk Scown and Greg Mullins, at his home at the Garberville Airport.
Tom Machi was an intelligent, thoughtful, artistic and a funny man with his dry sense of humor all wrapped up in one package. Tom knew all the history with the Cove. I had such a great time listening to his stories and then he would listen to me per growing up in Eureka or something that I was passionate about. The other thing is, if you walked into his office at the General Store which was the warehouse, he made time to listen to you no matter how busy he was. The conversation was not necessarily about the General Store but to say hi to each other. But on the other side that man would not tell me where he dug up the clams below the boat ramp. My walking partner and I would stalk him at 7:00am to find his spot. I miss Tom and I am sorry for your loss Lisa along with your family. Lisa, he loved you dearly besides having a huge giving heart for our community.
Tom was a great guy. Looking at Ed’s picture, man were we ever that young? Know alot of same stories as Ed. Your Dad was always a little quiet if you didn’t know him, but always worth listening when he spoke. So sorry when I saw this before. Please know he is loved by so many friends from throughout his life.
SFHS Class of 1975 classmate.
Thank you John. You’ve described him perfectly. Thank you for sharing your sentiments. He was an incredibly loved man.
