Avenue of the Giants Closed Between Phillipsville and Miranda Until September

Fish Creek Project on Avenue of the Giants

Artist rendition of the Fish Creek Project on Avenue of the Giants

A new project at Fish Creek on the Avenue of the Giants between Phillipsville and Miranda is forcing the closure of the popular tourist attraction on either side of mile marker 4.18 until September.

A Caltrans information page about the Avenue states, “Approximately 0.29 mile of Route 254 at Fish Creek would be temporarily closed during construction. Motorists and bicyclists would be detoured using US 101 between the Miranda and Phillipsville exits. Access to the parking areas in the project vicinity would be closed to the public during construction. However, access to the Avenue of the Giants would be accessible to the public on either side of the closure.”

According to Caltrans spokesperson Myles Cochrane, “Caltrans’ Fish Creek Project…will remove an existing undersized box culvert and replace it with a bridge, which will eliminate a longstanding barrier for fish.”

The new 32-foot-wide by 42-foot-long bridge “will restore natural stream conditions and make available 2.4 miles of high-quality habitat immediately upstream of a junction with the Eel River,” Cochrane told us by email yesterday.
According to Cochrane, “This facility has actually been identified as the highest priority for fish passage barrier removal in the northern portion of the state, as it will not only immediately open up a large quantity of high-value habitat for the spawning of adult fish, but will also act as a year-round cold-water refuge for juvenile fish. This is a much-needed combination for threatened anadromous fisheries.”
He explained, “Due to the project’s location within a State Park and an old-growth redwood forest, significant planning was necessary with the local community and stakeholders in order to move this project forward.” There were several public meetings and comment opportunities about the project.

Cochrane said, “Caltrans would like to extend thanks to the community, residents, and nearby businesses for their patience as we construct these vital improvements.”

There aren’t many businesses along that stretch, but it will be a tough tourist season for those that are. Chimney Tree is one.

Hope they don’t use the same folks working(?) on the overpass on the 299 (North Bank Rd exit) …unless you want to extend this project by 2-3 years, like they have at the perpetual “shoring up” (or whatever they’re doing) to the overpass on the 299 via North Bank road…I think they rebuilt the World Trade Center faster! Just an idea…

Lotta 30-40 something’s dying lately. Could be absolutely anything except ol “safe and effective”

On to the task at hand:

The Avenue is a controlled mess (repaving) all between Miranda and Myers Flat as well.. looks like it’s gonna take a couple few minutes to complete. That said one couldn’t ask for a better place to be stuck in traffic. Sunroof, open.

People are dying from a shot that they got almost 2 years ago, where are your satistics for all these deaths? Before the vaccine nobody was dying?. There are more people dying from overdoses than the vaccine but you are not concerned about that. I am sick of anti vaxxers that think they actually care about people, due to no evidence of this mass die off due to the vaccine and could give an F less about the millions that actually died from covid. IT makes you look selfish and lacking of sympathy for the millions that died of Covid, all so you can say you were right, with no evidence to back it up.

Time perhaps better spent researching prevention of possible side effects. I don’t imagine anger aids the immune system.

Every single medication you take has a small, but possible side effect, why do you think you have disclaimers on every medication you take, so they company does not get sued. Millions died from Covid how come that many people dying does not matter to anti vaxxers, but a very small chance of a side affect does? Hippies came off as very selfish people for not caring about the millions who died and were hospitalized, and refused to even use their mask, but pretend like they were doing a service for humanity fear mongering about vaccines.

Look I can find things about him on internet about him also, saying the opposite. But I do not need a youtuber to tell me things I can see. billions go vaccinated world wide, Phizer was not the only vaccine used, they never let go of their patent, and the whole world used other vaccines, and there has been no mass die of or changing of DNA. https://johnplatinumgoss.com/2020/12/16/dr-john-campbell-a-danger-to-all/

The only reason it was even legal was because of an ’emergency authorization.’ That’s why they had to make ivermectin out to be such a terrible medicine. Face it, the pharmaceutical companies bought the media and guilted everyone into taking an experiment. They’ve been trying to get approval from the FDA for mRNA shots since I was pre-med back in the early nineties. I use to work in a medical research laboratory. Doctors are only mechanics these days and only know anything by memorization or computer. They got immunity from congress. -nobody under 70 was at risk unless diabetic- The shot killed my mom and my father in law.
Nobody cares about your politics. Do your politics care about you? The hills are full of ‘progressives’ who are literally killing each other in order to virtue signal.

nobody made ivermectin out to be a terrible medicine, it is great for parasites. I will come out and say it i dont believe you did medical research if you did you would know they have been studying the mrna since it was discovered in the 60s and they started researching it in the 70s.I am 47 and i have 2 friends my age, with names, Ernestine Nickens, and Nano Villaloboes who died of Covid, look them up on facebook i, can prove it. What are the names of your mom and father in law that died of the vaccine, I do not believe you. A doctor saved my moms life from cancer, so I am very thankful they exist, if you hate doctors so much then no one is making you go to them, but you have no right to demonize people who devote their lives to saving others.

Today is the first day for the chimney tree ? to be open with the work beening done on the Avenue. I told the manager of the chimney tree yesterday why don’t they do this work during the fall after tourist season. Cal trans doesn’t care about the lost of revenue.

Because the project will take too long to implement in the short fall window before rain and increased streamflows resume. They are likely bound by a work window ending in late October, or earlier if we get significant early season rain, and they can’t risk being shut down with a half-finished bridge.

Horrible timing, this is definitely going to hurt the chimney tree badly and the traffic is significantly lower in Miranda as well. The avenue was flowing with traffic until this started now it’s a slow trickle. There should be a ban on doing road construction on the avenue between June and September unless it’s an emergency. This work could have been done in the spring or the fall and not impacted the businesses that depend on the tourist traffic, instead it’s going to ruin what was predicted to be the busiest travel year to our area in a long time. Impact to local businesses should be considered before road work is scheduled, it greatly hurts an already strapped local economy

Regulatory work limitations will only allow them to work from ~6/15 through the end of October – CanTrans doesn’t make these rules but they need to abide by them.

You can’t dig and pour concrete in the middle of winter when it rains 1- 2 inches a day. And there will a large group of workers there that will probably get lunch a The Chimney Tree multiple times a week. And their will still be access to the restaurant for the general public. Let’s be grateful for creek restoration and local jobs.

Cal Trans, and the construction crew on this project should be obliged to eat lunch every day at the Chimney Tree, until they reopen the road…

And some temporary signage near Sylvandale on the southbound freeway, directing some traffic to the Chimney Tree, would also help.

I agree. Maybe change the word “obliged” to “encouraged” and who can oppose this idea?!! Maybe Cal Trans can give a free ‘food, next stop: ‘Chimney Tree’ sign at the No bound Avenue exit, and similar for ‘Miranda Market’, and ‘Restaurants’ at Miranda No bound exit. Hey CT! Be part of the community and solution please!
I mean heck! The northbound exit south of Phillipsville has been closed for months and months already!!

“Obliged” may have been too strong of a word, I’ll admit…

How about “strongly encouraged”…???

I could have said “mandated”…

What I was really trying to convey was closer to “subsidized”.

Cal Trans could foot the bill for any of the crew to eat at the Chimney Tree, lunch and or dinner, for the duration of the bridge project, and for the Avenue repaving project that is happening concurrently.

Yep. It was you that came to mind…

Could you have your mail forwarded temporarily to the Miranda PO, General Delivery, for a little while?

Just a thought…

________________________

I called and checked at the Miranda PO, (707) 943-3571, they said it was doable, on line, or in person in Miranda even, by filling out a postcard…

She said to make sure to check the “temporary” box…

It takes about a week to process, first class mail and packages will be forwarded…

Hope it helps…?

??You want eggs in your beer…????‍♂️

Your not gonna get either of those in Phillipsville for at least a while, either…

I hear the Deerhorn Store is closed, or will be soon, also…

(Miranda has you covered…?)

You could always spring for a PO Box for six months in your preferred location, for after hours convenience…

Depending on how often you prefer to check your mail, it could still save you some time and gas money.

??Those PO Boxes are gonna rent out fast, don’t delay…?

Not necessarily…

See my comment above…

TEMPORARILY forward your mail from Phillipsville to Garberville, Redway, Myers Flat, or Miranda, General Delivery…

Whichever is most convenient for you…

Doable online, or in person…

…until the road reopens…

Make sure you check the “temporary” box…

That should save you a bunch of miles…

??Your welcome…??

The Avenue has been struggling ever since it stopped being 101. When I first got here Wiley’s Burl, the Deerhorn Market, The Riverwood Inn, Madrona Motel, Sawblade Tavern and Forest of Arden were trying to hang on after being bypassed. We opened the Blue Moon in Miranda in 78 and didn’t really make money till we moved to town.

What I remember most, was anxiously focusing on the cook’s overly extended full length, drooping cigarette ash, watching that it didn’t drop into the breakfast, as he masterfully prepared the eggs, (with just one eye open, the other squeezed tightly shut, to keep the smoke that rose towards it, from burning.)

I must not be the only one that still remembers that…

Amazingly, it never did drop, AFAIK…

I recall in 1997 when the culvert was plugged during a big rain. I was at the Riverwood and left for Myers Flat but had to turn around. I went back to the bar to let everyone know, then took 101 to get home.

I was unaware if the road closure. So around noon today, I set on traffic at the glass house, as I was trying to get to Miranda Market for a gas & a lighter. I finally had it & turned around & drove to Redway. On my way back, I stopped at Chimney Tree for lunch.

Caltrans need better signage about the road closure, so residents can became aware of what type of delay to expect.

yea, I see the Phillipsville store is closed this year. now all the people who usually get their emergency milk and eggs there have a long go around. I think there are many people in Phillipsville who don’t have extra income for gas to Miranda when the road goes straight through.
Caltrans almost killed rio dell closing the bridge between here and Scotia a few summers ago.
